10th place goes to the Swedish band CULT OF LUNA and the album "Mariner"

"Mariner" is a collaborative studio album between the CULT OF LUNA and the American vocalist Julie Christmas, formerly of the bands MADE OUT OF BABIES and BATTLE OF MICE. Serving as CULT OF LUNAs seventh studio album and the first time Christmas has appeared on the entirety of a full-length album since her 2010 solo debut The Bad Wife, "Mariner" was released on April 8, 2016 through Indie Recordings. Contrasting the industrial city themes of CULT OF LUNAs last studio efforts, "Vertikal" and "Vertikal II" from 2013, "Mariner" focuses its concept on space exploration and is really a beautiful piece of music.

Tune Of The Days - 20 Best Albums of 2013 pos: 11-20

Now we almost reached the end of this year, December 20th and during this time of the year it's time to sum it all up with this year's best albums! This have been a really good year album wise, when I started to collect together all the good albums before this, I realized after a while that this does not really hold when you start approaching 3 digit :) Well after a few hours it starts to resemble to something like a top 20, a really difficult task this year. In other words, it has simply been too much good records.

Many great records have unfortunately fallen off the list, but the music heart have decided and now when I look at it, it was not quite what I had expected from the beginning, which means that this list got to be very interesting. I am absolutely convinced that you not fully agree with me, but this is what I like. And luckily is the taste is divided, how else would it be.

First up we present this year's best albums between 11-20. Where you get the first 10 at once.

11. Ghost - Infestissumam

Swedish ghouls, with their "hard" second album  Infestissumam have Ghost actually taken a step forward and reveal the incredible creativity and created a worthy sequel.

12. Purson - The Circle And The Blue Door

The singer Rosie Cunningham is mastery of 60s-tinged eeriness and acid-fried atmospheres have created a real mystique record The Circle And The Blue Door, a record that for sure will release you totally if you close your eyes.

13. Blood Ceremony - The Eldritch Dark

Blood Ceremony has done it again, The Eldritch Dark is a magical album that you can not miss.

14. Fuzz - Fuzz

Ty Segall and with his new project Fuzz, grabs a high position with the selftitled debut, infectious hooks with psychedelic muscle and soul.

15. Monster Magnet - Last Patrol

Dave Wyndorf has crept from his hiding place and is finally on two sturdy legs, which can be witnessed on Load Patrol, what a comeback.

16. Cult Of Luna - Vertikal

The post-metal Swedes released a masterpiece, a record that belongs in every record shelf.

17. In Solitude - Sister

70s rock influences with feelings of post-punk and gothic spices grace the skin of "Sister". An excellent album.

18. Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats - Mind Control

Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats has been one of the most notable cult phenomenon in recent times and with Mind Control, they have expanded their repertoire for another trip, a dreamy excursion with clear influences from the heavier side of 1970s rock.

 

19. Port Noir - Puls

The Swedish Semi Progressive band Port Noir with their debut Puls, they released a grand emotional album, where a high musicality and a well balanced softish tone in contrast to the hard, they really made ​​a fine début.

20 . Motörhead - Aftershock

Aftershock is an album that really flirt with the greatness that the bands trade mark is know for.

Cult Of Luna - Light Chaser

Hello Sweden, Hello Umeå, Hello Cult of Luna.

Today we will listen to a track from the latest EP from the band called simple as "Vertikal II" that was released on September 17, 2013. The EP features three previously unreleased tracks that were written during the original Vertikal sessions, but not recorded. The CD and digital versions of the EP also feature a remix of "Vicarious Redemption" (originally on Vertikal) by Justin Broadrick of Jesu and Godflesh fame.

Vertikal II is seen as a continuation and completion of the band's "journey into the harshness of the monotone city landscape" that began with its early-2013 studio album, Vertikal. Cult of Luna guitarist Johannes Persson said, "With Vertikal II, we complete and end a chapter that, for the last few years, have been a big part of our lives. Now we leave the inner city and look up into the vast void above." At one point in the writing process, Cult of Luna considered releasing Vertikal as a double album, but scrapped the idea because, as Persson puts it, "double albums are hard, as it's hard to maintain a consistent quality." The band's idea then was to release a few additional tracks shortly after the release of the studio album as a continuation – a plan that was kept secret from both their fans and record label until the EP's masters were almost completed.

The remix of "Vicarious Redemption" by Justin Broadrick was not originally a part of the EP. Cult of Luna's record label pressured them to include a remix on the release. The band caved into the label's demands and asked them to get Broadrick to remix "Vicarious Redemption" out of spite because, at almost 19-minutes long, it was the most difficult song to work with. Persson, who said he believes remixes to be a "waste of time," said Broadrick was chosen because he is "one of the few people I'd trust with a remix," and later praised his work on this song as an "amazing way of doing a remix."

 

Todays tune “Light chaser”, is a dark piece with harshly growling repeating of the words “Onward, Forward” until his voice almost breaks.

Kongh - Skymning

New week, which means a new album that will step up to the throne. This week will be the Swedish Doomsters Kongh!

The new album "Sole Creation" is a 4 song piece and clocks in around 45 minutes of Heavy Doomish Sludge Metal Riffage topped with of Psychedelica, Classic Rock and Proggressive Rock.

This is Kongh is new, even if you can hear some elements of the older Konghs creations. With "Sole Creations" has the band taken a major step in the development, one could refer to the cover, which is decorated with a giant, forest-dwelling gorilla, that comes out of a Swedish tarn and look threatening wickedly over the little insects who runs for life in the the thick forest. The band have taken their third long-player and spray painted it with all of the necessary ingredients to make a mastepiece, it has a more progressive and wider expanse of riffs, a bigger space of vocals, a excellent balance of the dark and hard elements. It’s a brilliant album that this duo have created.

I recommend this record with the utmost warmth.

Heaven for a Kongh fan!

Todays tune "Skyming" is the last track and the longest piece. I could say that this is possibly the best track they have written so far, it combining everything that Kongh have done and spiced up with their newer more progressive, psychedelic elements, a true slow-burning masterpiece!




Sole Creation also include a guest appearance of John Doe from Craft. The album was recorded at Teknikkompaniet (Vetlanda, Sweden) by Peter Lundin; mixed and mastered by Magnus Lindberg of "Cult Of Luna".

Kongh’s front-man, David Johansson, commented:

“After a very long time of hard work, this album is finally ready for release. We couldn’t be more happy with the way it turned out and I really think it is the best Kongh material so far. For our old fans, I am pretty sure it will be well worth the wait and I also think it holds great potential to satisfy a bunch of new listeners. In my opinion, the album is more dynamic and has much more emphasis on melodies than our previous works. At the same time it maintains the harshness and it’s undoubtedly the heaviest slab of metal we’ve done as well.”

Cult Of Luna - Passing Through

Once again a new week and it's time to present this weeks album. We stay in Sweden but travel up north to Umeå, were we will find the post-metal band "Cult of Luna". They formed from the remnants of a Umeå hardcore punk band called Eclipse in 1998. They slowly garnered critical appreciation and underground popularity with early releases Cult of Luna (2001) and The Beyond (2003) however, it is 2004's Salvation that can be considered their "breakthrough" release. This was followed by Somewhere Along the Highway in 2006, another largely well-received album.

In August 2006, the band released a remake of "Marching to the Heartbeats" from Somewhere Along the Highway entitled "Heartbeats" solely on the internet community MySpace. The song was available for download for a few days and was later removed. The point was to see if the song would be kept alive by file sharing, and was also apparently a statement against the conservative music industry, says keyboardist Anders Teglund in an interview.

In 2008 the band released its fifth album, Eternal Kingdom. It was released in Europe on June 16, followed by its release in the United States on July 8. In 2009 they released a DVD including a live performance from 2008, an interview with the band, as well as all of the band's videos. On October 18, 2009, the band released Eviga riket, a hardback book/audiobook covering the story and themes from Eternal Kingdom. The book and audiobook are bilingual, printed and spoken both in Swedish and English. The audiobook contains new pieces of music and soundscapes written by the band. Eviga riket was released the 23 of February 2010.

The latest release and the sixth album "Vertikal" grabs the nice price as The Record Of The Week here at Tune Of The Day. The album was released on January 25th, 2013. The album is thematically influenced by the film "Metropolis" a hypnotic backdrop of machinery and repetition.

Before the band started writing they were keen to find a theme that in a very direct way could be shown through the music, and they hope to have achieved this with the new album. They developed clear structures, very linear, refusing to over complicate the writing process. The album is a nice one indeed Vertikal is an interesting and accomplished hybrid, but it isn't perfect. In fact, it works best on a track-by track basis, though the record clearly aims to be its own holistic, all-encompassing universe. Persson says Fritz Lang's early sci-fi horror Metropolis served as a stylistic inspiration for an album "that was going to sound like a 'factory.'" After a dozen trips through, though, the sequencing and transitions still feel ineffective. The prelude "The One" doesn't funnel into what would have been the more daring gambit, "I: The Weapon". And the end of "Mute Departure" and the beginning of "In Awe Of" have nothing to do with the interlude that divides them, a 45-second synthesizer piece that seems to summon the legacy of Laurie Spiegel only as a perfunctory demonstration of erudition.
