Wolves In Haze - Chaos Reigns

Monday, a new week and it's time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

The Swedish and Gothenburg-based heavy rock/doom metal band WOLVES IN HAZE will drop their second full-length album "Chaos Reigns", on Sept. 3 through Majestic Mountain and Tvåtakt Records. WOLVES IN HAZE was formed in 2014 and release their self-titled debut in 2016.

WOLVES IN HAZE is a new acquaintance, but after playing the promo I must say that I am very impressed.

"Chaos Reigns" opens up with "Green River Speaks", sea breeze, drums, and a black roar from the underworld start up the album until the thick guitars kick in. The vocals of guitarist Manne Olander is rough, melodic, and very comfortable and gives the steam roller exactly the lubrication it needs for impeccable rolling. The guitars of Manne Olander and Olle Hansson sound really nice and it's very difficult to stay away from playing air guitar. The rhythm section of the drummer and bassist Kalle Lilja gives the tune a great mix. At the first spin before I read all the intel about this I thought it was Feffe Berglund, singer from BOMBUS behind the microphone as they sound very similar at first sight. Nothing bad at all, love Feffe and now I love Manne. "Way In Haze" follows up with more furious guitar work in a very melodic way. The vocals are more strained, slightly pissed off but controlled and work out really good in this smasher. Followed up by "In Fire" where the tempo is screwed up a notch with a much harder and rawer approach, punkish, almost hardcore in a mix of REFUSED and RAISED FIST, to refer to some Swedish bands. In "The Night Stalker" drags WOLVES IN HAZE you down a filthy path of raucously raw, death metal-infused rock and bloody roll. Old school death metal riffs and some abysmal vocal parts by the guest singer Tomas Lindberg (AT THE GATES), the result is unexpected and very good. The heaviness continues in "Tormentor" where they pick the influences from the past. Halfway thru the album and it's time to slows down in "My Destroyer", where acoustic guitars along with a soulful duo vocal between a man and a woman that both are lurking in danger. The guest female vocalist is Martina Svärd from the Swedish psychedelic rock band TORNET. A beautiful piece to recharge the batteries for the next part of the album. With a steady attitude, we move on to "Beyond Perception", a dreamy melodic but still very riff-based. "Into The Grave" serves us a high tempo and power riffing piece which changes to more dirty punkish rock in "Heat Of The Moment" to then pull up collar a notch and invite us to a melodic riff party "Breath In The Night" until we reaches the end and it's time for the title track "Chaos Reigns" to tie this album together and end this in a completely magical way, an instrumental piece where they pick all the best pieces of their own creation and lets the instruments speak, where the chaos must be overcome at all costs and when we reach the crescendo by an electric force and evil has been defeated and a silence arises and chaos ceases to rule.

This is an excellent album, it's dirty, heavy, doomy, and punky! Really well-made album. Give it a spin and I promise you! Once it spins for you, it will drag you down to its chaotic journey!

"Chaos Reigns" is produced, recorded & mixed by Kalle Lilja & Per Stålberg at Welfare Sounds. Assisting engineering by Olle Björk. Mastered by Daniel Johansson at Welfare Sounds Mastering. The band is strengthened up with the bassist Emil Rolof to be a full four-piece band.

At The Gates - The Paradox

Gothenburg melodic death metal pioneers (who are also celebrating their 30th anniversary as a band) AT THE GATES will release their seventh studio album "The Nightmare Of Being" this summer. The concept album focuses on the realization of your own mortality, nihilism and pessimistic philosophies.

A genre-defining act of the Swedish melodic death metal scene. The band around Tomas "Tompa" Lindberg was formed in 1990 and disbanded six years later. But they never really did a proper farewell tour. Therefore they rejoined forces in 2007 for the "Flames Of The End" tour. This injected new blood into them, and so they ended up being back ever since!

The pioneers of "Gothenburg style" melodic death metal return with their highly anticipated follow-up album to 2018’s “To Drink From The Night Itself", pre order "The Nightmare Of Being" https://atthegates.lnk.to/TheNightmareOfBeingID

Today's tune "The Paradox" is taken from the upcoming album "The Nightmare Of Being", out July 2nd, 2021

At The Gates - To Drink From The Night Itself

Monday, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

"To Drink From The Night Itself" is the sixth album from the Swedish melodic death metal innovators, AT THE GATES. The album was released on May 18 via Century Media. Produced with Russ Russell (NAPALM DEATH, THE HAUNTED, DIMMU BORGIR) at Parlour Studios in the U.K.

"To Drink From The Night Itself" is the follow-up 2014's "At War With Reality" features conceptual artwork created by Costin Chioreanu of Twilight 13 Media, who previously worked with AT THE GATES on the band's last album.

The departure of the founding member Anders Björler has not caused the band to fall down into the abyss. Instead, his brother Jonas has taken one step up and grabbed the lead in the making of a powerful new album, already on the first tune you will recognize the band, the musical arrangements are classic AT THE GATES style, hard, heavy and totally crashing, the sound is deeper and darker, the melodies are carefully crafted by musically genius.

Jonas Stålhammar (BOMBS OF HADES, THE LURKING FEAR) replaces Anders Björler on guitar and he does really a great job here with twin partner Martin Larsson. Tomas Lindberg vocals have not changed much, it still sounds harsh and vicious with feelings of despair and frustration. And deliciously playing by the drummer Adrian Erlandsson, that shines with clever beat changes that give a different and seductive rhythm.

The heroic instrumental “Der Widerstand” (of the resistance) begins the journey into the concept of the album which uses the epic novel “The Aesthetics of Resistance” by Peter Weiss for inspiration. The novel tells a story of Nazi resistance in Europe during the 30’s and 40’s with a focus on how art can be used to influence and define the struggles of subjugation and opposition. The album closes with the magnificent piece "The Mirror Black" and I realize that this is the end of a stunning album, well-done guys!

Sum: "To Drink From The Night Itself" is nothing more than a technically accomplished work of art and it consolidates AT THE GATESs status as one of Sweden's premier melodic death metal bands.

Enjoy today's tune!

Tune Of The Days - 20 Best Albums of 2014 pos: 11-20

Now we almost reached the end of this year, December 20th and during this time of the year it's time to sum it all up with this year's best albums!

This have been a really, I mean really good year album wise, when I started to collect together all the good albums before this, I realized after a while that this does not really hold when you start approaching 3 digit :) Well after a few hours it starts to resemble to something like a top 20. It was really difficult task this year. In other words, it has simply been too much good records this year.

Many great records have unfortunately fallen off the list, but the music heart have decided and now when I look at it, it was not quite what I had expected from the beginning, which means that this list got to be very interesting. I am absolutely convinced that you not fully agree with me, but this is what I like. And luckily that the taste is divided, how else would it be.

First up we present this year's best albums between 20 - 11. Where you get the first 10 at once. Today's tune will be publish later on this evening. So here we go!

20. Accept - Blind Rage
The old-school metal band ACCEPT, with their third album within the five years since their re-launch. ACCEPT shows once again that they still can deliver a excellent record.

19. Electric Wizard - Time To Die
Electric Wizard Releases a cocky and modern doom canon!

18. Truckfighters - Universe
Fuzzy rockers no One releases a nice piece of work with heavy riffing along with catchy lyrics.

17. Ancient Ascendant – Echoes And Cinder
Ancient Ascendant has dropped a powerful piece on the death metal scene. With it's
extremely effective technique will hook any Death Metal fans on this globe.

16. Monolord - Empress Rising

Empress Rising hooks you with it's, almost hypnotic way, around a huge layer of psychedelic space doom blended with a mix of stoner vibes and trippy heaviness that will take you off your dirty shoes and put you out somewhere else out there in the darkened space and leave you breathless.

15. Bloodbath – Grand Morbid Funeral

Sweden’s masters of horrors Bloodbath with Nick Holmes (Paradise Lost) who now handles vocals shows that they still can make a record that will frighten most of the souls on this planet.

14. At The Gates – At War With Reality
What a comeback record, that At The Gates is able to deliver a record like this after 19 years is pretty cool.

13. Foo Fighters - Sonic Highways
The Foo Fighters are back with a freakin' fun album. A decent fist-pumping rock'n'roll record.

12. Mastodon – Once More Round The Sun
Once More Round The Sun is a non-stop journey into the progressive jungle of crazy math-y "Mastodon". It is a brilliant continuation of "The Hunter" but still its completely different and on such higher level.

11. Ne Obliviscaris - Citadel
This dark beauty release is one of the better compositions of the year.

Todays tune comes in a hour or so.

At The Gates - Heroes And Tombs

New week, time to unleash this week's "Record Of The Week". "At War With Reality"

"At War With Reality" is probably the most anticipated metal album this year! At The Gates will turn into one of 2014's genre biggest release. After 19 long years since their eminent release "Slaughter of the Soul" they are back and they learned that "Never say Never again" and I can only say that the wait was well worth it.

"At War with Reality" is the fifth studio album, released on 28 October 2014. It is the band's first album since Slaughter of the Soul (1995), marking the longest gap between two studio albums in their career, and their first release on Century Media Records. It is a concept album based on the literary genre of magic realism.

The album is the excellent comeback record! At least as far as I'm concerned. The production is clear and bombastic and the guys are in top form on this record, Tomas sings marvellous, he has grown into mature beast during the years. Jonas bass sound is chugging hard like a B52. Anders and Martin guitars steering the huge ship of At The Gates with harmonize melodic leads and creative riffs that you will pale with envy and all this rests on Adrian Erlandssons drum sound, something that you almost drop your chin to.

That the band have grown during the years with other projects is something that you can hear, that they managed to retain their great classic song writing for this record, which is brilliant and one can only bow for it.

To summarise this: It hooks you from the first listen and you only want more of it. "At War with Reality" is as addictive as drugs.

The album was recorded at Studio Fredman in Gothenburg and was mixed at Fascination Street Studios in Örebro, Sweden with Jens Bogren (Opeth, Katatonia, Soilwork, Paradise Lost, Kreator). The cover artwork for the effort was designed by Costin Chioreanu, who has previously also worked with bands such as Arch Enemy, Morgoth and Darkthrone. Chioreanu gave the strong lyrical theme of "At War With Reality" an outstanding conceptual togetherness with the visuals he crafted for this project. "At War With Reality" is a concept album based on the literary genre of Magic realism.

At the Gates is a Swedish death metal band from Gothenburg, and a major progenitor of the melodic death metal (or Gothenburg death metal) sound.

Initially active from 1990 to 1996, the band reformed in 2007 for a reunion tour before breaking up once again in 2008. However, they reformed for a second time in December 2010, and have since continued to perform live. The band will release At War with Reality, their first album in 19 years, in late 2014.

Today At The Gates consist of:

Tomas Lindberg − vocals
Anders Björler − guitar
Martin Larsson − guitar
Jonas Björler − bass
Adrian Erlandsson − drums

At The Gates - Death And The Labyrinth

The seminal Swedish metallers "At the Gates" released a music video for the new track "Death and the Labyrinth". The song appears on the much-anticipated comeback studio album "At War With Reality" which will be released on October 28th (one day earlier internationally - Sweden) via Century Media Records.

Tomas Lindberg (vocals) comments: "We had a very special idea about the kind of approach we wanted for the first video from "At War With Reality". What we needed was someone gifted enough to throw himself artistically into the project full on. The lyrics to the song are very multi-layered and surreal, so we wanted someone to create a fevered dreamworld that went with the melancholic frustration and dramatic desperation that we feel comes across in the song. This is exactly what Patric has created for us. It's his vision of the music and lyrics, which compliments the track perfectly in my opinion. I couldn't be happier!"

Director Patric Ullaeus adds: "It's always nice to work with creative artists who are like-minded. Ideas seem to flow easily. We had a lot of fun making our vision come true. Being on these amazing locations in Antelope Canyon, Arizona was truly an unforgettable experience."
