The Armed - All Futures

The Detroit collective THE ARMED returned on April 16, 2021 with their first new album in over three years and Sargent House debut, "Ultrapop". The album reaches the same extremities of sonic expression as the furthest depths of metal, noise, and otherwise "heavy" counterculture music subgenres but finds its foundation firmly in pop music and pop culture.

As is always THE ARMEDs mission, it seeks only to create the most intense experience possible, a magnification of all culture, beauty, and things. The band goes on to explain, "crafting vital art means presenting the audience with new and intriguing tensions—sonically, visually, conceptually. Over time and through use, those tensions become less novel and effective—and they become expectations. The concept of "subgenre" becomes almost the antithesis of vitality in art—itself a fetishization of expectation. "Ultrapop" seeks, in earnest, to create a truly new listener experience. It is an open rebellion against the culture of expectation in "heavy" music. It is a joyous, genderless, post-nihilist, anti-punk, razor-focused take on creating the most intense listener experience possible. It's the harshest, most beautiful, most hideous thing we could make."

Today's tune "All Futures", that was the first single from the band’s third album "Ultrapop". The tune is melodic, technical, squelchy—it features Troy Van Leeuwen from QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE. The video clip comes with a live performance that sounds basically the exact same as the studio version and gives you a hint of how talent they are. Protomartyr - Processed By The Boys

"Ultimate Success Today" is PROTOMARTYR's fifth album. Following the release of "Relatives In Descent", the band’s critically acclaimed headlong dive into the morass of American life in 2017, "Ultimate Success Today" continues to further expand the possibilities of what a PROTOMARTYR album can sound like.

These American rock band formed in Detroit, Michigan, in 2010. The band consists of Joe Casey (vocals), Greg Ahee (guitar), Alex Leonard (drums), and Scott Davidson (bass).

To date, the band has released five studio albums: No Passion All Technique (2012), Under Color of Official Right (2014), The Agent Intellect (2015), Relatives in Descent (2017), and Ultimate Success Today (2020)

Today's tune "Processed By The Boys" is the first single from PROTOMARTYR since re-releasing their debut LP "No Passion All Technique" last year. The new single arrives with a video directed by David Allen, and is inspired by a clip of a Brazillian TV presenter being trolled by a puppet. Greta Van Fleet - The Battle At Garden’s Gate

Monday, new week and it's time to present "Record Of The Week".

GRETA VAN FLEET’s debut, "Anthem Of The Peaceful Army", was rather eclipsed by all the comparisons with LED ZEPPELIN. Now the the Michigan four-piece rockers are back with the sophomore "The Battle At Garden’s Gate", an album with high anticipation knockin on the door.

Well, will they meet it? Hell yeah, this is a more mature GRETA VAN FLEET and yes the ZEPPELIN still flows in the veins and yes this is freaking good. "The Battle At Garden’s Gate" have twelve tunes with a play time of one hour and 3 minutes. The album was released April 16th, 2021 by Lava/Republic Records.

The album opens up with "Heat Above" and gives the listener a first taste of what to come and will be a recurring theme throughout the album, powerful and bombastic with huge choruses and soundscape, organs and a high pitched and wide vocal range, and a big creative mind to show that the three Kiszka brothers and the drummer Danny Wagner can stand on their own legs and no need for the support wheels any longer. That the two brothers Josh and Jake takes alot of space with the special vocal voice and performance and the magical guitar tones, but they got an excellent support by a punchy rhythm duo of Wagner and Sam. The bluesy piece "My Way, Soon" is a great guitar rocker that is more direct and harder. On the 3rd tune something happens, the half paced ballad "Broken Bells" is really beautiful, Josh sings a little more down toned and caresses the notes in a magnificent way, and the guitar playing is completely frigging magical, so neat. This continues on "Built By Nations", a tune that seems to have a riff that Jimmy Page lost somewhere on the road back in the day when creativity was in full bloom. Beside that it's a wonderful piece where all four serves us as a listner a real killer of a tune, the guitar playing is amazing, the thick bass licks and the drummming pattern are crunchy and well executed, all this topped by powerful vocal. The following tune, "Age Of Machine", is a powerful one, maybe the star on the album where they mixes psychedelic and hypnotic passages with blues-rock arrangements with more complex structures and a big chorus that gives goosebumps. "Tears Of Rain" is an another half paced beauty, opens up with acoustic guitars and then it's all Josh wide vocal range, and the heartfelt performance that triumphs the tune. "Stardust Chords" is an pleasantly surprise, full of energy, amazing guitar and killer chorus with a garden theme. "Light My Love" is another slightly slower song until the RUSH riffing pice "Caravel" enters the arena where Josh really gets to excel with his singing voice. "The Barbarians" is a pretty cool rocker where the wah wah guitar comes in focus, a tune that grows on every spin. "Trip The Light Fantastic" is a tune where he sings "Away from the world we have riddled with scars", powerful chours and amazing vocals. The album closes up with "The Weight Of Dreams" an almost nine minute beautiful thing, almost like a full body massage, big and powerful, and the guitars just blow me away, this is amazingly done, I just love it and I am so happy.

To sum this up, "The Battle At Garden’s Gate" is a excellent example of a great rock and roll album with a musical craftmanship that is just stunning and they exploring new territories and their identity, giving glimpses of their potential in the process.

Sum: It’s a wonderful, comprehensive rock 'n roll record that you need to get!

Greta Van Fleet - When the Curtain Falls

A few weeks ago GRETA VAN FLEET premiered "When the Curtain Falls", the first single from their highly anticipated, as-yet-untitled debut album. A week ago, the band stopped by The Tonight Show to perform the single. See it below.

The young, Michigan-based group first came to prominence last year with their debut EP, "Black Smoke Rising", and its high-flying lead single, "Highway Tune." Since then, the group's profile has risen exponentially, with endorsements from the likes of Joe Satriani and a number of sell-out tour dates. A widespread comparisons to no-less than LED ZEPPELIN with their bombastic riffs, atomic drumming, and searing vocals.

The band have just started touring and soon they will pay Europe a visit and a show in Stockholm is set on November the 4th. Really looking forward to this.

Today's tune "When the Curtain Falls" is taken from the upcoming yet-untitled debut album. The clip is taken from a episode of "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon", July 26.

Greta Van Fleet - From The Fires

Monday, time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

"From The Fires" is GRETA VAN FLEETs second record but their first full length album, released November 10, 2017. Their first record "Black Smoke Rising", a double EP, released  April 21, 2017.

These youngsters that consists of the Kiszka brothers and their friend from school have garnered plenty of LED ZEPPELIN comparisons and generated a whole lot of buzz for their band GRETA VAN FLEET. They was formed in Frakenmuth, Michigan, just outside of Detroit, where 20-year-old twin brothers Josh and Jake Kiszka began playing shows with their 17-year-old younger brother, Sam, and 17-year-old family friend Danny Wagner. Holding their practices in the Kiszka family garage and road-testing their songs onstage throughout Michigan, the four became a band of brothers whose songs mix classic chops with the thrill of teenage angst.

At first spin, I was totally blown away, Wow, what a voice and those riffs, holy freaking moses. That these youngsters have created an album that joyful and funny to listen to is amazing. Super-sized hooks, catchy tunes with a raw riffage and the sweeping vocals of a front man who was born to wail.

"From The Fires" contains lots of musical crackers like the bluesy "Safari Song", weee I get goosebumps, sing-along choruses, groovy and catchy like hell. "Edge Of Darkness" with it's moving melody, cleaver classic guitar riffage that melts you like ice on a hot summer day. "Flower Power"  is another guitar driven piece with absolutely magic vocal performance. A superb cover version of Sam Cooke’s "A Change is Gonna Come". The crazy catchy track "Highway Tune" that firing on all cylinders with its bluesy melody and fiery guitar solos. "Talk On The Street" continues on the same flow with catchyness and amazing vocals. The album closes with blusey "Black Smoke Rising", great tune to end this magnificent album. GRETA VAN FLEET a breathing new life into a sound that's blew out of cars, kitchen radios and living room stereos for decades.

Sum: 70's rock with a modern life, don't miss this one!

Today's tune "Highway Tune" is taken from the bands debut album "From The Fires", enjoy! These kids were highly influenced by the British Invasion's appropriation of the blues and "Highway Tune" offers a stellar start to what looks like a promising career.

Sponge - Plowed

Sunday, time for a classic.

"Plowed" is a song by American alternative rock band SPONGE. The song was released as the second single from the group's debut studio album "Rotting Piñata". "Plowed" was also featured on the band's compilation albums "Molly and Hits & B Sides Volume One".

The song was featured in the 1995 film "Empire Records", but was not present on the film's soundtrack. The song was also featured in the 1998 film "No Looking Back". In 2007, the song was featured in the Cold Case episode "Stand Up and Holler" (season 4, episode 20).

“Plowed” continues to be the band’s signature rock track, having been spotlighted on Guitar Hero’s “Warriors of Rock – 90’s Rock Track Pack” – and on the Paper Jamz Guitar Series 2, in addition to the soundtrack for the Gerard Butler surf movie “Chasing Mavericks.”

The melodic hardcore/metalcore band EVERGREEN TERRACE covered the song in 2004 for their album "Writer's Block".

SPONGE is an American alternative rock band from Detroit, Michigan formed in 1991 by Vinnie Dombroski, Mike Cross, Tim Cross, and Joey Mazzola. All were formerly of the hard rock band LOUDHOUSE. SPONGE was signed to Sony Records in 1994 but have since switched to other labels.

The band recruited Jimmy Paluzzi on drums to round out the lineup. Their debut album, "Rotting Piñata", released in 1994, was a major hit, received heavy play on radio and MTV, and was certified gold by the RIAA. The two biggest singles from that album were "Plowed" and "Molly" but by the end of 1994 Charlie Grover replaced drummer Paluzzi. Their follow-up album was called Wax Ecstatic; the track "Have You Seen Mary" was included in the Kevin Smith film Chasing Amy.
