Slayer - Angel Of Death

Sunday, time for a classic.

"Angel of Death" is the opening track on the American thrash metal band SLAYERs 1986 album "Reign in Blood". The lyrics and music were written by guitarist Jeff Hanneman. They detail the Nazi physician Josef Mengele's human experiments at the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II.

Although the lyrics describe Mengele's abuses rather than endorsing them, "Angel of Death" led to accusations of Nazi sympathizing and racism against the band, which they vigorously denied but which followed them throughout their early career. Despite the controversy and the resulting delay in the release of "Reign in Blood", the song remains a live favourite and has appeared on all of SLAYERs live albums.

The song has been described as highly influential in the development of thrash metal or speed metal, and is highly regarded by some critics; AllMusic's Steve Huey called it a classic and the album "the pinnacle of speed metal". The half-time riff was sampled by PUBLIC ENEMY in their 1988 song "She Watch Channel Zero?!."

Auschwitz, the meaning of pain
The way that I want you to die
Slow death, immense decay
Showers that cleanse you of your life
Forced in
Like cattle
You run
Stripped of
Your life's worth
Human mice, for the Angel of Death
Four hundred thousand more to die

Angel of Death
Monarch to the kingdom of the dead

The show at Hovet with SLAYER was a pure thrash metal fest, 3 great support acts like LAMB OF GOD, ANTHRAX and OBITUARY as you surely notice already, that I could not resist playing them all here.

SLAYERs show is the far best I have ever seen and I believe I have seen them more than 10 times over all these years. SLAYERs show at Hovet is the best live performance of the year by far. But in the other hand I have missed many because of to much work and when I day off comes I prefer to relax and rest.

The setlist of SLAYER was the regular one, playing the same tunes at every stop on this tour. The pyro was pure magic, great work Pyrotek! Nice to work with you guys again.

On December 2, 2018, Holt announced that he would not perform the remainder of the band's European tour to be with his dying father. Former MACHINE HEAD and VIO-LENCE guitarist Phil Demmel would fill in for him as a result. Two days to learn all the riff, amazing, as he pulled it off terrific.

The show ends with standing ovations for almost 10 minutes when Tom Araya stands still in front of the audience and receiving cheers and applause without adversity, he moves slowly along the stage edge and sucks in the cheers, he is the happiest man at this moment, he ends everything by reading a note in Swedish saying ”Jag kommer sakna er alla” (I will miss all of you), so powerful and heartbreaking.

And all I can say is that we will miss you SLAYER!

Setlist from the show at Hovet.

Here is a classic live clip.

Lamb Of God - Overlord

Next one out from this weeks live experience is the Richmond based heavy metal band LAMB OF GOD. The final support band for SLAYER a few days ago. They did a pretty decent job, but it partly felt more like an 8-5 job than a nightclub show. Seen better shows from these lads.

Today's tune is the quasi-ballad features lyrics penned by vocalist Randy Blythe. He also came up with the video treatment. "I wrote the song about the dangers of self-obsession in our distressingly myopic and increasingly entitled 'me-now/now-me' culture,"

"Overlord" is taken from the eighth studio album "VII: Sturm und Drang". The album was released on July 24, 2015 through Epic Records in North America and through Nuclear Blast outside North America.

The official music video for the album's third single, "Overlord", premiered on June 30, 2015 "Overlord", the new Jorge Torres-Torres-directed video from Richmond, Virginia-based metallers LAMB OF GOD, can be seen below.

Some LOG picks from the show.

Setlist from Hovet.

Ruin
Walk With Me in Hell
Now You've Got Something to Die For

Anthrax - Indians

"Indians" is a single by thrash metal band ANTHRAX, the tune is taken from the album, "Among the Living". It is one of ANTHRAXs most famous songs, appearing on their best-of albums: "Return of the Killer A's, Madhouse: The Very Best of Anthrax" and the Anthology: "No Hit Wonders (1985–1991)".

It also appears in Guitar Hero game Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock and as downloadable content for the Rock Band series and Rocksmith 2014.

The tune was, of course, played on the show a few days back when they supported SLAYER on their farewell tour.

The setlist from Hovet:

Obituary - Redneck Stomp

Holy Moses, my head is thrashed. What an evening at Hovet, four strong bands on one stage, 3 of them supporting the farewell of the classic thrashers' SLAYER.

The first support band was the American death metal legends OBITUARY, early slot but almost half full venue even if they started an hour after doors. 30 minutes set made them play the best from their catalogue.

OBITUARY started their set with their lovely instrumental "Redneck Stomp", a tune taken from the sixth album "Frozen In Time". It was released on July 12, 2005, and was the band's first album in eight years since 1997's "Back from the Dead", and the last to feature guitarist Allen West.

OBITUARY setlist from Hovet, Sweden December 5th.

Soundgarden - Drawing Flies

It has been a very long time since Soundgarden had a concert in Stockholm, they did a comeback festival tour last year that reached to Sweden Rock Festival. But now finally it was time for a real tour and a visit to Stockholm and Hovet.

This is a band that has reunited right in time and surely for the right reasons as they give a hell of a show and plays a raffle of tunes that spans from the hole Soundgarden repertoire where even the never tracks can fit in, excellent setlist in my eyes/ears, see it below. The atmosphere is dense and intense and many of the tunes have got a more "heavy" touch. Chris Cornell still have his voice intact and delivers a great concert.

A picture form the show:

Europe - In The Future To Come

Yesterday Europe was in town for a concert at the Hovet, Stockholm with them on the Scandinavian tour they had the Swedish rock band Mustasch.

The band has one of Sweden's most nicest crew were all are absolutely gorgeous, I know almost everyone very well, some private and others through the profession, this makes the job rolls on how smoothly.

However, the band had hired additional equipment from a company here in Sweden for the Scandinavian part of the tour. Even where there were familiar nice faces, but one that should not be allowed to work with other people, his bitterness and hateful external pulls down the atmosphere drastically. A person who really wants to show who's boss, but do it in an incredibly clumsy way, so it also affects his own colleagues, very rotten in my opinion. Which meant that both my colleagues and I wanted to go and hide when he showed up. So, no more bullshit, but back to yesterday's gig.

Europe, a band that really sounds good live, good sound is obvious when the band plays, a breathtaking light show with some simple means, so value for money you get show-wise. While the song selection was magnificent for Europe-fan, classics mixed with new tracks. The band looked very fresh, though they have been out a long time on tour.

This evening was a little special in all means, it's exactly 30 years after the tune "In The Future To Come" won them a record deal in 1982. So this tune was on this evenings setlist (see below).

Europe is a Swedish rock band formed in Upplands Väsby in 1979 under the name Force by vocalist Joey Tempest, guitarist John Norum, bassist Peter Olsson and drummer Tony Reno. Since its formation, Europe has released nine studio albums, three live albums, three compilations and nineteen videos.

Todays tune "In The Future To Come" is taken from the first self titled studio album. It was released on March 14, 1983, by Hot Records.

Jack White - Sixteen Saltines

White's Blunderbuss Tour adding many miles under his feets and thankfully some of the miles took place at Hovet in Stockholm.

The story behind Jack White is by now too long and would certainly cause severe difficulties in concentrating. He is one of today's leading musicians, he has a huge work ethic and he is an enigmatic character that captures our consciousness without problems.

With The White Stripes, he conquered the whole world, geographically and sensual, The Raconteurs gave him a larger arsenal to play with, The Dead Weather was a playhouse for White and Alison Mosshart running lost in. White has produced country music legend Loretta Lynn's magnificent "Van Leer Rose, "given to grips with Mozart by JEFF the Brotherhood and Insane Clown Posse. There are few things, if any at all, to stop him.

It is found that there are many irons in the hot lava but that's not all. In april this year we got first taste under his own name, "Blunderbuss ", an orgasmic album that moves across the Mississippi delta tinny guitars, the deep South's piano tones and Nashville's violins. If so, that White found home or lost is irrelevant. That he found the right is, however, easy to see.

Jack White does what he wants when he enters the stage, that we have learned by now, it can be White Stripe, The Raconteurs, or in any other installation. This time he travels with his six female strong live band. These multi-talented supporting White's minimalist blues punk and creates a really good swing live even if he feels a bit lost from time to time, the only thing I could rise an issue on, is the sound that was well so thickly in order to understand all the instruments.

Foto: Viktor Wallström

Todays tune "Sixteen Saltines" is the second single on Jack White's 2012 solo album Blunderbuss. Jack White told NME about the inspiration for the lyrics: "My daughter asked for a snack, and I said, 'what do you want to have?', and she said, 'I think I'll have 16 saltine crackers.' And I said, 'You'll have three!' At times I imagined that character was eating cracker rations on a lifeboat and he's remembering all these other things."

Judas Priest - Night Crawler

Last week we had a visit from The Metal Gods (Judas Priest), who did a gig at Hovet here in Stockholm. Even if the band has lost a classical guitarist (KK) but has been replaced by an equally good one (Faulkner), also he is a lot like its predecessor, both in appearance, looks and style of playing. Rob has reached the age where it is time to put the shoes on the shelf. Summa summarum did they manage to get an excellent evening at Hovet. The voice is old and hoarse, but still he gets a really good balance and with his fellow players it becomes actually quite okay. The support act during this evening was Hammerfall, who also did a good gig.

Judas Priest are a British heavy metal band formed in Birmingham, England in 1969. Known for the modernize twin lead guitar style, with the duo of K. K. Downing and Glenn Tipton. They combined this sound with Rob Halford's unique vocal style to create their own distinctive style of heavy-rock and for introducing the S&M leather and studs look into heavy metal, they have sold over 50 million albums worldwide.

Their popularity and status as one of the exemplary and influential heavy metal bands has earned them the nickname "Metal Gods" from their song of the same name.

On April 20, 2011, it was announced that K. K. Downing had retired from the band and would not complete the Epitaph World Tour. Downing cited differences with the band and management and a breakdown in their relationship. Richie Faulkner, guitarist for Lauren Harris's band, was announced as his replacement for the Epitaph World Tour. Downing's retirement leaves bassist Ian Hill as the only remaining founding member of the band.

In an August 2011 interview with Billboard, Halford explained that he and Tipton "have about 12 or 14 tracks completely mapped out" for a new studio album. He went on to say that four of those were already recorded and mixed, and suggested a new album should be out in 2012.
American heavy metal band Anthrax named a track in honour of Judas Priest on their 2011 album Worship Music.

Current members
Ian Hill – bass (1970–present)
Rob Halford – lead vocals (1973–1992, 2003–present)
Glenn Tipton – lead guitars, rhythm guitars, keyboards, synthesizer (1974–present)
Scott Travis – drums, percussion (1989–present)
Richie Faulkner – lead guitars, rhythm guitars (2011–present)

Here are some photos from the gig in Stockholm.

Todays tune "Night Crawler" is taken from the twelfth studio album"Pain Killer", the album was Released 3 September 1990.

The Painkiller itself is one of a series of fictional messiahs created by Judas Priest. The Painkiller is described as a metal messiah sent to the world to destroy evil and rescue mankind from destruction. The Painkiller is believed to be inspired by the fallen angel from the Sad Wings of Destiny album cover that Judas Priest recorded early in their musical years. He also makes an appearance along with the Hellion (from Screaming for Vengeance), the goggled face from Killing Machine (Hell Bent for Leather in the US) and the Metallian (from Defenders of the Faith) on the cover of Metal Works '73-'93. A very similar character on the cover of Angel of Retribution, also a metal angel, but with a slightly less smooth appearance and with the Judas Priest cross on his chest rather than on his shoulders.

The most noticeable feature of the Painkiller, besides his metal body is that he 'rides the metal monster'; a motorcycle with a dragon for the chassis and two circular saw blades for wheels.
