Eerie shadows are lurking in the dark corners of spring 2018; the spirit that denies, a force able to distort our conception of space and time. Over seven years, deathlike silence has filled the halls of the world’s biggest black metal forge, DIMMU BORGIR, whilst powers have been gathering to resurrect the band right in time for their 25th anniversary. Now they finally mark their return with a vicious work of art that can be defined as timeless in the truest sense of the word: "Eonian".

"Eonian" is the tenth studio album by Norwegian black metal band DIMMU BORGIR, which was released on May 4, 2018.

Production of "Eonian" originally started at least in 2012 but faced many delays for years after. However, it was given an eventual official release date of May 4, 2018, which ended up being their first original studio album in nearly 8 years following 2010's "Abrahadabra". The band self-produced the album while the engineering was handled by Jens Bogren. DIMMU BORGIR had to re-sign to their current label Nuclear Blast and reflect on communication during the eight-year gap. During this gap, three of the band members became fathers and focused on their family life. When describing the album's sound, Silenoz stated that the symphonic metal parts are more symphonic while the black metal sound of DIMMU is more black metal this time around. In April, DIMMU BORGIR announced limited tour dates for the month of August 2018 that have expanded, check all the dates below.

DIMMU BORGIR (/ˌdɪmuː ˈbɔːrɡɪər/) is a Norwegian symphonic black metal band from Oslo, Norway, formed in 1993. The name is derived from Dimmuborgir, a volcanic formation in Iceland, the name of which means "dark cities" or "dark castles/fortresses" in Icelandic, Faroese and Old Norse. The band has been through numerous lineup changes over the years; vocalist Shagrath and rhythm guitarist Silenoz are the only original members who still remain, with lead guitarist Galder being a longstanding member. On 28 May, it was announced that Victor Brandt (ENTOMBED A.D., FIRESPAWN) had officially joined as the band's new bassist.

Accept - Metal Heart

Sunday, time for a classic! To follow up on yesterday's post with U.D.O., it would be perfect to look back and pick up something historical that he also performs live.

Metal Heart is the sixth studio album by German heavy metal band ACCEPT, released in 1985. Although the group had recorded before at Dierks-Studios, this was the first album produced by Dieter Dierks himself. This album was a cautious attempt to crack the lucrative American market with more accessible songcraft and emphasis on hooks and melodies. Although critically panned at the time, today Metal Heart is often considered by fans as one of the band's best records. It contains several of their classic songs such as "Metal Heart" and "Living for Tonite". The band also makes a detour into jazz territory with the unusual song "Teach Us to Survive".

Wolf Hoffmann explained the concept behind the album: "We had read an article that someone was working on an artificial heart and that one day everybody is going to have a computerized heart. It talked, in general terms, about how more and more of humanity gets sucked out of the daily life and more and more replaced by machine. It's not a new thing now, but then it was new. Humans versus machine, was the general vibe of the record." The original cover concept was for a hologram of a metal heart, until budget considerations resulted in a traditional cover. But fittingly for the futuristic theme of the album, Metal Heart was the first ACCEPT album to be digitally recorded.

Hoffmann recalls Dieter Dierks as a very demanding producer: "We would do some pieces several dozen times trying to capture what he had in his mind for a specific section," adding: "Each song we tried different combinations of guitars, mic'ing and even strings!"

The song "Metal Heart" is well known for containing the cover of two famous classical themes: Tchaikovsky's "Slavonic March" (in the intro) and Beethoven's "Für Elise" in the main riff and solo. This song was covered in 1998 by Norwegian black metal band DIMMU BORGIR for their album Godless Savage Garden. "I had no idea it would become as popular as it did," Hoffmann remembers of his contribution to the song.

"Midnight Mover", about a drug dealer, is one of the more commercial songs on the album and was selected for a memorable music video that anticipates the bullet time filming technique by a full decade. "Just ahead of our time again!" jests Hoffmann.

Despite the more commercially appealing sound of the album, it fell short of the sales figures of its predecessor Balls to the Wall in America. Udo remembers the Breaker through Metal Heart era as the time when the band got along best together. Thus this would turn out to be the last album of ACCEPTs golden era, as cracks were soon to appear in the band's solidarity.

The digitally remastered CD edition includes two live bonus tracks, "Love Child" and "Living for Tonite", both taken from the live EP Kaizoku-Ban.

Dimmu Borgir - Dimmu Borgir

 

Hello.
Today we are going to enjoy the darkness of November, and we are going to be led by a band that used to be black metal and now.... not so much.
DIMMU BORGIR.

With that first coment, I understand that several of you, oh almighty readers, might think that i see this as a bad thing.
I do not.
My relationship with the Norwegian black metallers that have taken their namne from the cliff on Island started quite late. I know that their albums "Stormblåst", and the 3-word-titled-suite "Enthrone Darkness Triumphant", "Spiritual Black Dimensions" "Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia" and "Death Cult Armageddon" are considered to be classics within the genre - but honestly... I have little or no love lost for them.
I've heard them, I own "Puritanical...", but they do not speak to me.
They do not touch me.
It was not until the epic first track of "In Sorte Diaboli" that I really understood anything of DIMMU BORGIR (the track is titled "the Serpentine Offering" and begins with a sort of "Lord Of The Rings"-esque intro before blasting ahead with both might and melody) and actually felt that they were a band worth listening to.
And then the 2010 record "Abrahadabra" came along and just turned everything upside down.

This is no longer black metal, and it is a record filled with orchestral arrengements.
The mixing and the production of the album is just poerfect for an audiofile with access to a great stereo (me!), and hitting play to allow this "larger-than-life"-sounding record to fill the room is an amazing experiment.
The band has used a real choir. They have used a real orchester (The Norwegian Radio Symphony Orchestra) , and the use of the real deal instead of keyboards or samples really pays off on this record.
It.
Sounds.
Amazing.

And it also presents us with quite a different tune to accompany the november darkness.
Yes, we are still in the suite of guest posts by me, Chief Rebel Angel, that presents a number of different tunes that can act as sound track to the darkness that we in Sweden call the month of November - and this, with all it's light and easy-listening-qualities somehow fits perfectly in to that cathegory.
It is dark, epic and emotional at the same time as it is bright and hopeful, weirdly enough - and for me, walking along autumn roads during the daytime, kicking large red and yellow fallen leaves cannot be done to a better song.

The band has a core of three members, Shagrath handling the growl and the keyboards,  Silenoz doing the guitars together with Galder, but the guest musicians on this albums are propbably the ones that makes it great. They are Snowy Shaw that handles bass and the clean voices, as well as Daray behind the drums. They do a great job, and it is a bit sad that they are not represented on the band promo pics (on the other hand - take a look at the top picture and think twice... is it really a good thing to be part of..?).

Soundgarden was the main act on Thursday night. With a sneaking intro, great lighting and an ok sound, do the guys step on stage. Sounds great, but feels dark, slightly depressive vibe I get. But really fun to experience them live, I'm happy. Do not watch the entire show because I had other things to do, more on that tomorrow.

Soundgarden is an American grunge band formed in Seattle, Washington in 1984 by singer Chris Cornell, lead guitarist Kim Thayil, and bassist Hiro Yamamoto. Matt Cameron became the band's full time drummer in 1986, while bassist Ben Shepherd became a permanent replacement for Yamamoto in 1990.

Todays tune "Spoonman" is a song written by frontman Chris Cornell, "Spoonman" was released on February 15, 1994 as the first single from the band's fourth studio album, Superunknown (1994). "Spoonman" is often credited as one of the songs that launched Soundgarden's career into the mainstream.
