"Carnage" is a new album by Nick Cave & Warren Ellis, recorded over a period of weeks during lockdown. Although the pair have composed & recorded many soundtracks together, and Warren is a long-term member of The Bad Seeds, this is the first time they have released an entire album of new songs as a duo.
Nick Cave describes the album as, “a brutal but very beautiful record nested in a communal catastrophe.”
“Making "Carnage" was an accelerated process of intense creativity,” says Warren Ellis, “the eight songs were there in one form or another within the first two and a half days.”
"Carnage" is out now on vinyl, CD and all digital platforms.
Today's tune from the album is "Hand Of God", enjoy!
"All The Pretty Little Horses" (also known as "Hush-a-bye") is a traditional lullaby from the United States. It has inspired dozens of recordings and adaptations, as well as the title of Cormac McCarthy's 1992 novel "All The Pretty Horses".
Today's version is made by the British experimental music group CURRENT 93, a band that has been working since the early 1980s in folk-based musical forms. The band was founded in 1982 by David Tibet some time prior to forming the group).
CURRENT 93 made two versions as "All The Pretty Little Horses", for their 1996 album of the same name, one sung by Nick Cave the other one by CURRENT 93. There's also a third version, sung by Shirley Collins, on the compilation Calling for Vanished Faces
The version we pick today is with Nick Cave on vocals, enjoy this lullaby.
The Australian alternative singer songwriter/rocker Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds will release of the sixteenth studio album "Skeleton Tree" on 9 September 2016. The album will be accompanied by the film One More Time with Feeling, directed by Andrew Dominik, which is set to be screened in cinemas worldwide for one night only on 8 September 2016 just before the album's release.
The first song from the album, "Jesus Alone" (today's tune), was released with an accompanying video On 1 September 2016.
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds was formed in Melbourne in 1983 by lead singer Nick Cave, multi-instrumentalist Mick Harvey and guitarist Blixa Bargeld. The band has featured international personnel throughout its career and presently consists of Cave, violinist and multi-instrumentalist Warren Ellis, bassist Martyn P. Casey and keyboardist Conway Savage (all four from Australia), keyboard/percussion player Barry Adamson and guitarist George Vjestica (both from the United Kingdom), and drummers Thomas Wydler (Switzerland) and Jim Sclavunos (United States). The band has released fifteen studio albums and completed numerous international tours.
The band was founded after the demise of Cave and Harvey's former group the Birthday Party, the members of which met at a boarding school in Victoria, Australia. Deviating from the noise rock roots of their contemporaries, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds have produced alternative rock that has been influenced by various genres, such as punk rock, gothic rock, no wave and blues. Their early material—From Her to Eternity (1984), The Firstborn Is Dead (1985), Your Funeral... My Trial (1986) and Tender Prey (1988)—primarily featured a post-punk sound. The band has progressively incorporated other songwriting elements; for example, the 2008 release Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! experimented with garage rock, also an influence of the side project Grinderman. Synthesizers and minimal guitar work feature prominently on their newest album, Push the Sky Away (2013), recorded after the departure of Harvey in 2009.
Today's tune is the official video for "Jesus Alone", taken from the new album "Skeleton Tree", and feature film, "One More Time With Feeling".
In February 2016 the 76 yrs old lady and still rockin' Mavis Staples album "Livin' on a High Note" was released, Produced by M. Ward the album features songs written specifically for Staples by Nick Cave, Justin Vernon, tUnE-yArds, Neko Case, Aloe Blacc, and others. Discussing the album Staples said:
I’ve been singing my freedom songs and I wanted to stretch out and sing some songs that were new. I told the writers I was looking for some joyful songs. I want to leave something to lift people up; I’m so busy making people cry, not from sadness, but I’m always telling a part of history that brought us down and I’m trying to bring us back up. These songwriters gave me a challenge. They gave me that feeling of, ‘Hey, I can hang! I can still do this!’ There’s a variety, and it makes me feel refreshed and brand new. Just like Benjamin Booker wrote on the opening track, ‘I got friends and I got love around me, I got people, the people who love me.’ I’m living on a high note, I’m above the clouds. I’m just so grateful. I must be the happiest old girl in the world. Yes, indeed.
Mavis Staples (born July 10, 1939) is an American rhythm and blues and gospel singer, actress and civil rights activist. She has recorded and performed with her family's band The Staple Singers, and also as a solo artist.
Today's tune "Take Us Back" is taken from the fifteenth studio album "Livin' on a High Note", released in February 2016 under Epitaph Records. The clip is from The Late Show, Feb 23, 2016

Monday and a new week, which means it's time to introduce this week's "Record Of The Week".
First, I must inform that I am without "turntable" right now. Actually it is not so bad at all, it's on service and upgrade, gone more than a week or two. This means that I listen more to the digital format than I normally do, but on the other hand it gives the opportunity to listen on things that are not normally "to be found" on the proper format. This week's "Record Of The Week" is one of those, no Vinyl is made as far as I know.
"A Passage To Rhodesia" is the latest release (10th album) from the Luxembourg based neo-folk singer songwriter Jerome Reuters "ROME". He is know for his storytelling about history and 20th Century conflicts. Like the album "Flowers from Exile" was about the Spanish Civil War and "Nos Chants Perdus" is about the French Resistance. The latest album "A Passage To Rhodesia" is about the Rhodesian Bush War.
The album is soft, beautiful and warm where the story grows from tune to tune. Jerome Reuters voice is deep, sensitive baritone like and in a perfect shape to tell a tragic and sad story about the cruel war on the other side of the planet. His way of singing and voice reminds me of NICK CAVE. ROMEs musical and lyrical world is genuinely unique, blending traditional songwriting craftsmanship, unusual arrangements and fine poetry into one monstrous and intimate musical output that combines chanson, dark ambient, apocalyptic folk, pop, acoustic rock, martial industrial, cold wave, all rolled into one impressive avant-garde package.
Reuter’s songs are firmly in the tradition of chansonier heroes like JACQUES BREL and LÉO FERRÉ, but in a strange mélange with the darker brands of (post-)industrial music culture. ROMEs lyrics are inspired by world literature from Camus to Genet and Jerome’s frequent use of collage and sampling techniques serves to create a new kind of intertextuality between word and sound. The lyrical beauty of Reuter's compositions, the depths of his poetry and the complex experimental arrangements make ROME an unusually challenging musical experience
"A Passage To Rhodasia" is a great release and I could really recommend this album even if you can't get it on Vinyl, I hope he will release it.
There is a limited box version where a 10" vinyl is included, but it only have two tracks.
Todays tune "Hate Us And See If We Mind" is taken from the album "A Passage To Rhodasia", released August 10, 2014
REFUSED are back again. Their latest album, The Shape of Punk to Come, released in 1998. After a reunion tour in 2012 saw it a long time as it once was over for the influential hardcore band.
Now REFUSED announce their first album in 17 years. Freedom released on June 30, was produced by Nick Launay (ARCADE FIRE, KATE BUSH, NICK CAVE), and two of the songs; Elektra and 366, was written together with the Swedish producer duo Shellback previously written hits for (uh ...) BRITNEY SPEARS and TAYLOR SWIFT.
"It's no longer a question about a reunion," says the band's lead singer Dennis Lyxzén. "This is perhaps the most radical we've ever done, both musically and lyrically."
REFUSED is a Swedish hardcore punk band originating from Umeå, formed in 1991. In total the band released five EPs and three full-length albums before originally splitting up in 1998. Refused is composed of vocalist Dennis Lyxzén, guitarist Kristofer Steen, drummer David Sandström and bassist Magnus Flagge. Guitarist Jon Brännström was a member from 1994, through reunions, until being fired late 2014. Their lyrics are often of a non-conformist and politically far-left nature
Todays tune "Elektra" by Refused from the upcoming album "Freedom", available June 30th.
