Fake Names - Brick

FAKE NAMES is a new punk rock group consisting of members Brian Baker (MINOR THREAT, DAG NASTY, BAD RELIGION), Michael Hampton (S.O.A., EMBRACE, ONE LAST WISH), Dennis Lyxzén (REFUSED, INTERNATIONAL NOISE CONSPIRACY, INVSN), och Johnny Temple (GIRLS AGAINST BOYS, SOULSIDE). The band will release their debut album on May 8th.

FAKE NAMES began to take shape as early as 2016 when Brian Baker and Michael Hampton met in Hampton's home in Brooklyn to play music together. Then there were no intentions of forming a band, but more might create a song or two. It ended with the two friends and guitarists writing a handful of songs that day and ended it all by spontaneously deciding to start a band.

Johnny Temple was then recruited as a bass player. He is also an old classmate of the two. Later that year, during Chicago's Riot Fest, they got the idea to bring in Dennis Lyxzén as a singer.

Their upcoming album is 28 minutes long, co-produced by Hampton and Geoff Sanoff and recorded in Renegade Studios (owned by Little Steven Van Zandt). The album should be filled with bare-bones breed of punk and a large dose of power-pop.

Pre-order the album here: https://fakenames.ffm.to/fakenames

Today's tune "Brick" is the first single from the upcoming self-titled album, available May 8th

INVSN - This Constant War

Why not continue on the same path as yesterday, "This Constant War" is a tune taken from the Swedish post-punkers INVSN taken from their 2017 album "The Beautiful Stories".

INVSN (pronounced "Invasion") is a Post-Punk band from Umeå in the North of Sweden. The members have all played in influential punk and rock bands from Sweden. It is the music project of Swedish Punk rock musician Dennis Lyxzén. In contrast to his other projects, REFUSED and THE (INTERNATIONAL) NOISE CONSPIRACY, AC4 and many more. He has also been a touring member of THE BLOODY BEETROOTS. This started out as a solo career and much more folkish and softer than his prior music endeavors.

Sara Almgren used to be in the first Swedish all-female straight-edge band THE DOUGHNUTS. She later played keyboard and guitar in THE (INTERNATIONAL) NOISE CONSPIRACY and has also played in bands like THE VICIOUS and MASSHYSTERI. She has also toured with Marit Bergman and SAHARA HOTNIGHTS. Anders Stenberg is a member of acclaimed Swedish band THE DEPORTEES and also a touring member of Lykke Li's band. Christina Karlsson, besides playing in INVSN she also plays with bands and artist such as Frida Selander, TIGER FOREST CAT, and HONUNGSVÄGEN. Andre Sandström hails from Swedish hardcore thrashers DS-13 and has also played in bands like THE VICIOUS and UX VILEHEADS.

"This Constant War" is a song about human ability to make mistakes, be idiotic and selfish and to generally fuck up! But it's also about a second chance and a third chance and a fourth chance, says Dennis Lyxzén.

Today's tune "This Constant War" taken from the album "The Beautiful Stories" released June 9, 2017, on Dine Alone Records.

Old Man's Will – Hard Times - Troubled Man

Monday, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

The Swedish quartet OLD MAN'S WILL latest release "Hard Times - Troubled Man" is carbon-dated from the early 70's. With influence from bands like DEEP PURPLE and FREE.

The quartet are based in Umeå, a northern town known for being the birthplace of MESHUGGAH and REFUSED. The band consist of Benny Åberg - vocals, Klas Holmgren - guitar, Tommy Nilsson - bass and Gustav Kejving - drums.

"Hard Times - Troubled Man" is a real swagger, it has that mystique that I want from a album, you know that "little" extra to make an record interesting and not just a record. "Hard Times - Troubled Man" delivers a brash, bluesy classic boogie rock that is both catchy and groovy. A brilliant opus for the summer camp with barbecue and beers.

"Hard Times - Troubled Man" is comprised of eight tracks totalling a manageable 34 minutes where the tunes have a great swing and vitality in the material and they all are delivered with a memorable hook.

Ultimately, Old Man’s Will do what their idols did. They take the foundation of rock ‘n’ roll and leave an indelible stamp of their own.

Today's tune "Troubled Man" is the first single that shucks and jives between a hummable riff and a swinging stomp.

Refused - Elektra

REFUSED are back again. Their latest album, The Shape of Punk to Come, released in 1998. After a reunion tour in 2012 saw it a long time as it once was over for the influential hardcore band.

Now REFUSED announce their first album in 17 years. Freedom released on June 30, was produced by Nick Launay (ARCADE FIRE, KATE BUSH, NICK CAVE), and two of the songs; Elektra and 366, was written together with the Swedish producer duo Shellback previously written hits for (uh ...) BRITNEY SPEARS and TAYLOR SWIFT.

"It's no longer a question about a reunion," says the band's lead singer Dennis Lyxzén. "This is perhaps the most radical we've ever done, both musically and lyrically."

REFUSED is a Swedish hardcore punk band originating from Umeå, formed in 1991. In total the band released five EPs and three full-length albums before originally splitting up in 1998. Refused is composed of vocalist Dennis Lyxzén, guitarist Kristofer Steen, drummer David Sandström and bassist Magnus Flagge. Guitarist Jon Brännström was a member from 1994, through reunions, until being fired late 2014. Their lyrics are often of a non-conformist and politically far-left nature

Todays tune "Elektra" by Refused from the upcoming album "Freedom", available June 30th.

Moloken - The Titan Above Us

Imagine: darkness.
Utter, complete, mindnumbing darkness.
It's quite difficult, is it not?
Personally, I end up with a feeling rather than pictures in my imagination, feelings of being small. Insignificant. Exposed.
At least if I imagine that utter darkness with no hope of light, no hope of dawn on the horizon.
Perhaps this is what we call Black November in Sweden?

This is the third post in a series of five, celebrating the darkness that is the Swedish month of November with fitting music to accompany the darkness. All posts are made by Chief Rebel Angel, as guestposts, and the general idea is simple.
1) Find music that is fitting for this month
2) Create a mix so that the music presented is varied and from different subgenres of metal.
3) Present music that might not be so videly spread in a post

Today, we are going up north in Sweden, to the city of Umeå.
I've lived there. Made my military service there, lived in the student homes there (hey Ålidhem, for thos of you who know the city!) but never actually studied - and worked there.
I have strange memories from that city.
It was a great time, and I was happy and a bit crazy - and still I cannot think foundly of Umeå, due to the rivalry with the citys ice hockey team from my team. That kind of clouds my judgement, and the funny thing is that I know it is silly - but still can't do anything about it!
Musically though, Umeå is a great city.
Having spawned the likes of REFUSED and MESHUGGAH, the  scene is very much alive and vital.
Todays tune comes from MOLOKEN, and it is a very suitable record for this time of year.
It is also a record that gives me that same feeling as when I imagine complete and utter darkness.
I feel... small.
Insignificant.

The music is epic, a bit monotone and cruschingly heavy. MOLOKEN means "dejected" in english, and sums up the bands sound in a good way.
It goes without saying - this is a record that fits perfect in to the small three-step idea of the posts for november. The tune is the first off the album, an album that hit the stores in 2011.
This is "The Titan Above Us"!

The band is working on new material, and for those of you that live in Sweden and have just been shuffling around Sweden as support to NAGLFAR on a club tour. They will also be a part of the Gothenbourg Sticky Fingers-festival Scorched Tundra in december (together with AGE OF WOE, SKITSYSTEM, KONGH and TRUCK FIGHTERS).
"Rural" is the MOLOKENs second full length album, and it is an album you should pick up imidiately if this sort of sludge/doom-metal is to your liking.
After all - this is more or less the perfect soundtrack to the November darkness....

Refused - Rather Be Dead

Attention Sisters and Brothers! There are very few things in this life you truly cannot miss. Until now it could be said that such instances were really only two – your own wedding and the chance of travelling aboard a spaceship. Now Luger, with a proudly clinched fist in the air, presents you with your third once-in-a-lifetime experience: Refused will reunite and play Way Out West 2012!

When this highly explosive band from Umeå will, for the first time since 1998, come together on the same stage it is hard to believe that even the outdoors will be able to contain a show of such magnitude. Refused is one of the few bands to truly have made a difference and had a lasting influence on numerous contemporary music scenes. During the seven years they were active they managed to rewrite the rules of what a punk band could do. Like no band before or after, they managed to combine the explosiveness of a Molotov cocktail, harmonies reminiscent of the calm before the storm, lyrics powerful enough to kick start 90s counter cultures, and a roaring warmth that many have tried, though ultimately failed, to emulate. And, like Jesus, Refused became even more exalted after their death.

If you have somehow, against all odds, never heard Refused, we recommend you begin with the third and latest album – the critically acclaimed masterpiece The Shape of Punk to Come from 1998, a consistent favorite on lists of the most influential albums of all time and a work that has even been called ”the Sergeant Pepper of punk rock.” This is where all the pieces fall into place. Though Refused can lazily be categorized as hardcore/punk, they never allowed themselves to conform to the obvious or expected. They were – and are – ahead of every rigid standard, all the while being nothing short of fantastic. Take the song ”New Noise” for example – sharp riffs, exploding drums and a message that is as well-formed as it is unambiguous: old bandages won’t heal new wounds. Refused live is no exception – each show is a unique explosion. Once you have experienced it, every other concert will pale in comparison.

It’s 2012; anxiety, indifference and kitsch reign and our need of Refused may be greater than ever. This summer Way Out West will be the only place in Sweden where you can witness the future of punk in the best of the present. The new noise is on its way to Gothenburg. Nothing else matters. This is truly one of the few things you absolutely cannot miss.

”I came up during a great time in punk rock – my first gig was in 1980 opening for Black Flag – and I got to experience so many amazing bands, you know. I was the first kid on the block to get the Germs record, and that to me was the ultimate punk rock record…until Refused. The Shape of Punk to Come is the Seargent Pepper of punk rock.” -Duff McKagan, Guns n Roses

”I was blown away. My mouth literally dropped when I saw the ‘New Noise’ video and the next day I went out and bought the album. The pure intellect that was pouring out of this band – musical intellect, political intellect. Even when it comes to the arrangement, they were sophisticated. It still sounds fresh; it still sounds contemporary and new. There are a lot of riffs on St. Anger inspired by Refused.” -Kirk Hammett, Metallica

’New Noise’ is one of the great rock jams of all time. It’s just a heavy, unique, kick ass jam. When Zach left Rage Against the Machine, we’d actually talked to Rick Rubin about approaching Dennis to jam with him. That’s how impressed I was.” -Tom Morello, Rage Against The Machine

Refused is a Swedish hardcore punk band originating from Umeå, formed in 1991. In total the band released five EPs and three full-length albums before originally splitting up in 1998. Kerrang! magazine listed the band's 1998 album The Shape of Punk to Come at No. 13 on their 50 Most Influential Albums of All Time list in 2003. Refused is composed of vocalist Dennis Lyxzén, guitarists Jon Brännström and Kristofer Steen, drummer David Sandström and bassist Magnus Flagge. Their lyrics are often of a non-conformist and politically far-left nature.

On January 9, 2012, the band announced their long-awaited reunion (which was also highly contested considering the band's original and explicit declaration to never reunite), confirming shows at Coachella, Rock am Ring, Ruisrock, Roskilde Festival, Groezrock, Way Out West Festival, Sonisphere Festival (Cancelled), Download Festival, Rock for People, Primavera Sound, Hellfest,Fuji Rock Festival, and Pukkelpop
