Shakra - Hello

Mark Fox is back together with Swiss hard rockers SHAKRA. Chris von Rohr said the following after former singer John Prakesh left the band in early 2014: “Let’s bring back together what belongs together”.

That being said, it took a while till the early disputes had been put aside but in late summer of 2014 it was clear to everyone that it’s time to do it again Since that point of time, the whole band shed blood, sweat and tears to finish their new album High Noon which will be out on January 29, 2016.

Reunited with vocalist Mark Fox (aka Markus Fuchs), last heard from back in 2009, SHAKRA send out the melodic rockin' "Hello" in advance of the 2016 release of the group's tenth studio album, High Noon. As usual with the consistently strong and reliable SHAKRA, the twin guitar team of Thom Blunier and Thomas Muster power the tight Swiss group. Fox augments the SHAKRA show of force with his vivacious vocal delivery. The tune is a really melodic rockin' piece, see the video or check it out at Spotify, all can be find below!

With their first releases "Shakra" (1997), and "Moving Force" (1999), and by touring with GREAT WHITE and URIAH HEEP, the early career of this Swiss band was a steep learning curve with dramatic success but the real breakthrough came with their third record "Power Ride" (2001) when singer Pete Wiedmer was forced to leave the band because of ill health, replaced by Mark Fox. Mark immediately put his stamp on the following album "Rising" (2003), which saw SHAKRA rise higher on the career ladder than ever before and hit the German and Swiss album charts. The band played several concerts and festivals, one of which was the prestigious "Bang Your Head" event. The controversial video clip for the song "Chains Of Temptation" showed singer Fox giving himself a heroin injection.

And, after supporting IRON MAIDEN at the Swiss "Spirit Of Rock" festival, SHAKRA then took the decision to tour through 12 countries with HAMMERFALL and STRATOVARIUS. The band played a huge show in Zurich with GUNS N' ROSES in 2006.

Shortly after the Everest album was released, Mark Fox left the band and was replaced by John Prakesh on vocals. On April 23, 2014, John Prakesh announced he was leaving SHAKRA.
And Mark Fox rejoined the band :)

Helloween - My God-Given Right

The German power metallers HELLOWEEN recently released their 15th studio album "My God-Given Right", which was released on May 29 via Nuclear Blast. The album was recorded between October 2014 and February 2015 at the band's MiSueno Studio on the isle of Tenerife with producer Charlie Bauerfeind (GOTTHARD, HAMMERFALL).

HELLOWEEN is a German power metal band founded in 1984 in Hamburg, Northern Germany. The band is a pioneering force in the power metal genre and their second and third studio albums, Keeper of the Seven Keys Part I and Part II, are considered masterpieces of the genre. Twelve musicians have been a part of the band's line-up in its history, which has consisted of singer Andi Deris, guitarists Michael Weikath and Sascha Gerstner, bass guitarist Markus Grosskopf, and drummer Daniel Löble since 2005.

The cover art depicts a "pumpkin army" around a The Day After Tomorrow-like, buried-in-the-snow Statue of Liberty. It was once again created by Martin Häusler and it's also available as a 3D lenticular print, visible without 3D glasses. Deris remarked that the cover differs from previous covers because it features little color variation. According to Häusler, they "tried to build a world of ideas, keeping the 'classic Helloween' elements, like the pumpkins on the one hand and a complete new look on the other.  A first inspiration came from the album title, My God-Given Right', and some of the song titles, like "Swing Of A Fallen World", "Lost In America", "Battle's Won", etc. During my research, I stumbled upon the blockbuster Day After Tomorrow and the idea of just leaving the world to the 'pumpkins' was born." Deris later explained that the cover reflected Häusler interpretation of the album title, as he understood the name as a reference to a rebellion or something like that. However, the real inspiration for the title (which is also the title of a song) came from words from his father:

According to singer Andi Deris, the band insists on a simple motto: "Back to the roots — but with new songs". He continues: "More than ever, our fans want to sing and rock out along with us. This simply works best with the use of distinctive choruses and '80s hooklines."

Serious Black - Older And Wiser

SERIOUS BLACK, the new band featuring Roland Grapow (MASTERPLAN, ex-HELLOWEEN), Thomen Stauch (ex-BLIND GUARDIAN), Mario Lochert (ex-VISIONS OF ATLANTIS), Dominik Sebastian (EDENBRIDGE), Jan Vacik (ex-DREAMSCAPE) and vocalist Urban Breed (ex-TAD MOROSE), their début album, "As Daylight Breaks", was released on January 20, 2015 via AFM Records.

6 members, 6 friends - all with huge experience and knowledge from many years in the business and being part of the most successful melodic metal bands! SERIOUS BLACK is different to many of the so-called "all star" bands, because in fact, they are a real band. A band that crafted their incredible debut album "As Daylight Breaks" together, with every member involved into songwriting and recordings. "As Daylight Breaks" is a real teamwork effort, a melodic metal jewel displaying conviction, amazing musicianship and outstanding songwriting.

It all happened on a sunny 23rd of August in Spain, when Roland Grapow and Mario Lochert had a conversation backstage over a cool beverage, talking music business – you know, what musicians usually do.

For quite a while, Mario had had the idea of bringing together 6 musical masterminds to form a band floating around his head. After a few initial concerns about igniting various conflicts when getting together in that configuration, eventually Mario was able to convince Roland of his intentions.

Back in Munich, Mario immediately contacted his friend of many years, Thomen Stauch, telling him about his idea. Thomen was sold and joined the bunch right away. After that, Jan Vacik and Dominik Sebastian were quick to agree to a collaboration, too. With that, a new band was born, consisting of five highly motivated musicians!

Initially, it turned out to be quite a task to bring these full-time musical workaholics together in one studio at the same time. However, against all odds, they got together on short notice in January 2014. Needless to say, when they arrived at the “Dreamsound Studios” Munich, none of the blokes had any idea yet where exactly their musical venture would take them.

After a long night, accompanied with numerous anecdotes from the world of music and a solid amount of beers (which, of course, were just “meant to keep the vocal cords smooth”), the band started the songwriting phase! Everyone was on the same wavelength, as if they had been working together in this configuration for decades. The fact that they were able to collectively write songs, without any pressures and in an awesome environment, gave wings to these 5 maniacal musicians and got their juices flowing to create something outstanding. Everyone was literally bubbling with ideas and as soon as 7 days later, they had written eight roughly structured songs, building a foundation for a powerful and melodic Power Metal record!

Yet what good can awesome songs do without a voice to carry them? After a few considerations as to a fitting singer for the band, the newly formed group contacted the US-based Swedish expat “Urban Breed” (ex-TAD MOROSE, ex- BLOODBOUND, TRAIL OF MURDER). After exchanging just a few emails and samples, the answer was loud and clear: “Ok, I’m in, if you really want it! After a short wait, he submitted his first song ideas which fit in with the existing songs seamlessly.

Orden Ogan - F.E.V.E.R

ORDEN OGAN are the most promising band of the new power metal generation. The band was formed in 1996 by Sebastian Grütling (drums) and Sebastian Levermann (lead vocals and guitar). The Germans plays power metal with progressive and folk metal elements.

They currently have 3 demo albums and 5 full-length albums and are signed with AFM Records. The fifth album "Ravenhead" was released on January 16th 2015 (EUR) and February 03rd 2015 (US). They achieved international breakthrough with "To The End" (2012) and the latest looks pretty promising. "Ravenhead" is mixed by Sebastian "Seeb" Levermann at Greenman Studios.

The "Ravenhead" is also released as a Ltd.Gatefold/Colored Vinyl/180 Gramm

They are also the organizers of the German metal festival WinterNachtsTraum, which has featured such bands as Rage, Sinister, Axxis, Ensiferum, Van Canto, and Agathodaimon

The band is out on tour in Europe atm with Hammerfall and Serious Black, see dates below.

At The Gates - Death And The Labyrinth

The seminal Swedish metallers "At the Gates" released a music video for the new track "Death and the Labyrinth". The song appears on the much-anticipated comeback studio album "At War With Reality" which will be released on October 28th (one day earlier internationally - Sweden) via Century Media Records.

Tomas Lindberg (vocals) comments: "We had a very special idea about the kind of approach we wanted for the first video from "At War With Reality". What we needed was someone gifted enough to throw himself artistically into the project full on. The lyrics to the song are very multi-layered and surreal, so we wanted someone to create a fevered dreamworld that went with the melancholic frustration and dramatic desperation that we feel comes across in the song. This is exactly what Patric has created for us. It's his vision of the music and lyrics, which compliments the track perfectly in my opinion. I couldn't be happier!" 

Director Patric Ullaeus adds: "It's always nice to work with creative artists who are like-minded. Ideas seem to flow easily. We had a lot of fun making our vision come true. Being on these amazing locations in Antelope Canyon, Arizona was truly an unforgettable experience."

The album was recorded at Studio Fredman in Gothenburg and was mixed at Fascination Street Studios in Örebro, Sweden with Jens Bogren (Opeth, Katatonia, Soilwork, Paradise Lost, Kreator). The cover artwork for the effort was designed by Costin Chioreanu, who has previously also worked with bands such as Arch Enemy, Morgoth and Darkthrone. Chioreanu gave the strong lyrical theme of "At War With Reality" an outstanding conceptual togetherness with the visuals he crafted for this project. "At War With Reality" is a concept album based on the literary genre of Magic realism.

At the Gates is a Swedish death metal band from Gothenburg, and a major progenitor of the melodic death metal (or Gothenburg death metal) sound.

Initially active from 1990 to 1996, the band reformed in 2007 for a reunion tour before breaking up once again in 2008. However, they reformed for a second time in December 2010, and have since continued to perform live. The band will release At War with Reality, their first album in 19 years, in late 2014.

Warlord - Mrs. Victoria

A new week and it also means that it's time to present this week's album. This time we steer the ship of the big country America. There, we find "Warlord" a heavy metal band, formed in 1980 and based in Los Angeles, CA. This 'Warlord' should not to be confused with the '70s English punk rock group Warlord UK, the '90s death metal group Warlord UK, or any later groups by the same name.

This week "Record Of The Week" is the album "Deliver Us", the record that I have chosen is couple of years old, to be precise 30 years. This is an album that I had forgotten completely, but by chance I ran in to it again, however it was on the digital format. One can say that this is a true classic gem that should be in a well-stocked record shelf, how difficult it is to get hold of today I have no idea, would like to come across one on Vinyl, as far as I know, I do not have this today, if to a presumption is in a forgotten box somewhere though it feels a bit distant. So if you have it, contact me directly.

Warlord is the brainchild of guitarist/songwriter Bill Tsamis and drummer Mark Zonder, coming out of San Jose/USA back in 1980, was one of the most talented metal acts. They got well-known for the first time by submitting an entry for the "Metal Massacre"-sampler, the chosen song was "Lucifer's Hammer". 2 months later they released their awesome debut album "Deliver Us" which contained 6 brilliant classic heavy metal songs. The response on the debut from all over the world was extraordinary high and positive. With their sensitive, sympathetic and melancholic music they (Damien King (vocalist Jack Rucker) - vocals, Destroyer (Tsamis) - guitar, Raven - bass, Sentinel (Diane Kornarens) - keyboards and Thunderchild (Zonder) - drums) got amazing votes. Another entry (Mrs. Victoria) for the "Metal Massacre vol. 3"-sampler followed soon in 83 as well as a almost unnoticed vox-change since the new man (Damien King II) was pretty equal to damien king and the only difference between might have been their personal data.

Afterwards they recorded the single "Aliens/Lost and Lonely Days" which was released in june of 84. Again the line-up changed when the new bass player Archangel (Dave Watry) joined in. In the end of 84 they recorded a live video whose soundtrack was released as the LP "And the cannons of destruction have begun..", containing 4 songs from the debut, the 2 from the single and also the 2 new songs "Soliloquy" and "MCMLXXXIV".

Their biggest problem was probably they couldn't get a decent management and Metal Blade seemed to be unable to promote them very well and so their work was limited to 1 single and 1 LP in the end. Also they never ever made it to play live, not even once! Because of different activities and interests (Bill hung around with the London Philharmonics and Mark did drum-tec for Fates Warning) between Mark Zonder (Thunder Child) and destroyer (Bill Tsamis) the band broke up after a time and so one of the most original as well as talented heavy metal bands died. In the end metal blade released a best of-LP called "Thy Kingdom Come" in 86 and another compilation which has all Warlord songs in 93 ('Best of Warlord').

An extended version, including the whole Deliver Us EP, followed in 1989, titled Best of Warlord. It was the first time the band's music had been issued on compact disc, (hey Chief Rebel)!

Retaining a considerable underground following as a much beloved cult band over the years, Warlord reformed in 2002. Original members Tsamis and Zonder were joined by HammerFall vocalist Joacim Cans, a long-time Warlord admirer whose band had in fact covered the Deliver Us classic 'Child of the Damned' on their debut album, Glory to the Brave, in 1997. Warlord issued Rising Out of the Ashes via Italian Athreia Records. That same year, Tsamis, Zonder and Cans, backed by members of the Italian band Black Jester, played their first ever live shows at the Wacken Open Air festival.

Until 2011 no further activities had taken place but vocalist Joacim Cans stated in a February 2009 interview with the Italian metal magazine, Metal Maniac, that another album might be in the realm of possibility should there be sufficient label interest. Later the same year Bill Tsamis announced in the band's fan (The Warlord Battle Choir) page on Facebook that the band was once again in the studio. On March 12th, 2012 on the eve of his 51st birthday, Tsamis surprised Warlord fans with the first Warlord song in 10 years, called "Night of the Fury". It was then also revealed that vocalist duties were once again handled by Rick Anderson (Damien King III) whose stint at Martiria had just ended. In August 2012, Warlord announced that it would headline the 2013 Keep It True XVI Festival. This announcement was followed by two more dates in Greece in Athens and Thessaloniki.

Bill Tsamis auditioned for the vacant guitar spot in the Ozzy Osbourne band after the death of Randy Rhoads in the spring of 1982. After initially selecting George Lynch, new auditions were held in December '82. The position would go to Jake E. Lee instead.

Yngwie Malmsteen cited Warlord as his favorite band during an interview with Music Connection magazine in the early '80s.

Judas Priest - Night Crawler

Last week we had a visit from The Metal Gods (Judas Priest), who did a gig at Hovet here in Stockholm. Even if the band has lost a classical guitarist (KK) but has been replaced by an equally good one (Faulkner), also he is a lot like its predecessor, both in appearance, looks and style of playing. Rob has reached the age where it is time to put the shoes on the shelf. Summa summarum did they manage to get an excellent evening at Hovet. The voice is old and hoarse, but still he gets a really good balance and with his fellow players it becomes actually quite okay. The support act during this evening was Hammerfall, who also did a good gig.

Judas Priest are a British heavy metal band formed in Birmingham, England in 1969. Known for the modernize twin lead guitar style,with the duo of K. K. Downing and Glenn Tipton. They combined this sound with Rob Halford's unique vocal style to create their own distinctive style of heavy-rock and for introducing the S&M leather and studs look into heavy metal, they have sold over 50 million albums worldwide.

Their popularity and status as one of the exemplary and influential heavy metal bands has earned them the nickname "Metal Gods" from their song of the same name.

On April 20, 2011, it was announced that K. K. Downing had retired from the band and would not complete the Epitaph World Tour. Downing cited differences with the band and management and a breakdown in their relationship. Richie Faulkner, guitarist for Lauren Harris's band, was announced as his replacement for the Epitaph World Tour. Downing's retirement leaves bassist Ian Hill as the only remaining founding member of the band.

In an August 2011 interview with Billboard, Halford explained that he and Tipton "have about 12 or 14 tracks completely mapped out" for a new studio album. He went on to say that four of those were already recorded and mixed, and suggested a new album should be out in 2012.
American heavy metal band Anthrax named a track in honour of Judas Priest on their 2011 album Worship Music.

Todays tune "Night Crawler" is taken from the twelfth studio album"Pain Killer", the album was Released 3 September 1990.

The Painkiller itself is one of a series of fictional messiahs created by Judas Priest. The Painkiller is described as a metal messiah sent to the world to destroy evil and rescue mankind from destruction. The Painkiller is believed to be inspired by the fallen angel from the Sad Wings of Destiny album cover that Judas Priest recorded early in their musical years. He also makes an appearance along with the Hellion (from Screaming for Vengeance), the goggled face from Killing Machine (Hell Bent for Leather in the US) and the Metallian (from Defenders of the Faith) on the cover of Metal Works '73-'93. A very similar character on the cover of Angel of Retribution, also a metal angel, but with a slightly less smooth appearance and with the Judas Priest cross on his chest rather than on his shoulders.

The most noticeable feature of the Painkiller, besides his metal body is that he 'rides the metal monster'; a motorcycle with a dragon for the chassis and two circular saw blades for wheels.

Hammerfall - One More Time

 

As promised, I'll start going through the week's concerts, we start with last weekend when Hammerfall visited Stockholm for a gig. HammerFall is a power metal band from Gothenburg, Sweden. The band was formed in 1993 by ex-Ceremonial Oath guitarist Oscar Dronjak.

HammerFall are out on their "European Outbreak 2011" tour with the classic metal band Vicous Rumors, the New Hard Rock sensation Amaranth and hyped newcomers Death Destruction.

Swedish productions are usually very fun to do, given that you know almost everyone and everything usually goes smoothly, without fuss or confusion which this evening was. Met among others Tony who worked as Stage Manager on this tour, a nice guy who is always fun to meet, even Merch Linda was there.

Vicious Rumors is a bunch of really cool guys, where the singer is a bit crazy, which basically tried to hang himself in the microphone stand and headbanging in the monitors so almost the blood flowed, crowd surfing, etc, ran into him backstage after their gig and he saw little tattered out with a big bruise in the forehead and was limping, but he was as happy as before the show.

Hammerfall did a really good gig, good speed, tight and well played, In addition had their fun, which makes a large part of show to be successful. Unfortunately, I did not see the other bands play.

Todays tune "One More Time" is a song by HammerFall and was released as the promo for their new album Infected. Two versions was released, the first featured a live recording of "Hallowed be My Name" and a instrumental version of the title track. Later a second version was released featured "Lore of the Arcane/Trailblazers" live and a newly recorded version of "Blood Bound". It was written by Vocalist Joacim Cans and Guitarist Oscar Dronjak.



The music video was recorded for the song and was directed by Swedish director Patrick Ullaeus. Along with the album it deals with a Zombie Infection. It features a storyline with the band performing in a studio when they are attacked by Zombies. At first the band fights them but later they escape. The Zombies are played by fans of the band.
