Yazmin Lacey - Morning Matters

Armed with nectar-sweet vocals and a discerning taste in beats, Notts-based Yazmin Lacey is cooking up a classy sound that's two-parts golden era jazz and one-part British urban...

Yazmin Lacey never set out to be a singer. She’d always sung, but for herself, or for friends, who’d remark on the beauty of her blissed-out voice, the way it animates the life-skewering prose she likes to jot down — on a napkin, a Rizla, the back of a cigarette packet — whenever the mood takes her.

"Morning Matters" is Lacey’s most accomplished offering yet and showcases her growing abilities and confidence. The singer pairs candid songwriting with a laidback, graceful delivery and - as the title suggests - "Morning Matters" is inspired by new dawns and fresh starts. “The EP is dedicated to anyone that’s ever struggled with getting up and out in the morning, for everyone doing work on themselves and trying to live better”, explains Lacey. Contributors include Femi Koleoso and Ife Ogunjobi of Ezra Collective on drums and trumpet respectively (Own Your Own, Morning Matters), celebrated pianist Sarah Tandy on keys (Morning Matters), and jazz protege Moses Boyd on drums and production (Lately, Morning Sunrise).

Yazmin Lacey didn’t set out to be a singer. Born and raised in Manor Park, East London, she relocated to Nottingham whilst working for a children's charity and initially only considered making music as a way of having fun with friends. However, a chance encounter lead to her earning a place on Future Bubblers - Gilles Peterson’s development programme devoted to discovering and nurturing fresh UK talent - and enthused by the experience, Lacey recorded some songs in her living room, then in 2017 self-released her debut EP, Black Moon. The more polished When The Sun Dips 90 Degrees EP followed in 2018 and includes standout single Something My Heart Trusts, which has clocked up over 4.3 million plays on Spotify. “As soon as I made that first EP I knew there would be three of them, and this is the third”, says Lacey of "Morning Matters". “Black Moon was trauma, When The Sun Dips 90 Degrees was healing, and Morning Matters is moving forward.”

Today's tune "Morning Matters", the title tune from her EP, released March 27, 2020
