Thursday, time for a cover.

"These Boots Are Made for Walkin'" is a hit song written by Lee Hazlewood and recorded by Nancy Sinatra. It charted on January 22, 1966 and reached No. 1 in the United States Billboard Hot 100 and in the UK Singles Chart.

Lee Hazlewood intended to record the song himself, saying that "it's not really a girl's song", but Sinatra talked him out of it, saying that "coming from a guy it was harsh and abusive, but was perfect for a little girl to sing". Hazlewood agreed. Sinatra's recording of the song was made with the help of Los Angeles session musicians known as the Wrecking Crew. This session included Chuck Berghofer on double bass, providing the notable bass line with its quarter-tone descent. The session was held on November 19, 1965 at United Western Recorders in Hollywood, and additionally produced the songs "Foursome" and "The City Never Sleeps at Night."

“These Boots Are Made For Walkin'” tells the tale of someone who's had enough. She's clearly been putting up with the bad behaviour of a partner or lover for some time…doing her best to forgive and forget.

Subsequently, many cover versions of the song have been released in a range of styles: metal, pop, rock, punk rock, country, dance, and industrial. Among the more notable versions are the singles released by MEGADETH, Billy Ray Cyrus, Haley Reinhart, and Jessica Simpson.

“If Suicide produced a Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood song” is a hell of a tag line, and Kate Clover’s “These Boots” delivers on that premise. The menacing guitar seems pulled straight from “Frankie Teardrop,” while Clover’s vocals channel Sinatra’s swagger. Bonus points for the fun Twin Peaks-esque video.

Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood - Summer Wine

 

What a Sunday it has been, at least weather-wise. Today, it has been medieval day out in Tyresö with Knight and Sword Bearer, and a football game out in Orminge.

The summer is now here. So a classic with a little summery theme fits in well with a day like this.

Todays tune "Summer Wine" is a song written by Lee Hazlewood. It was originally sung by Suzi Jane Hokom and Lee Hazlewood in 1966, but it was made famous by Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood in 1967. This version was originally released as the B-side of "Sugar Town" the previous year, before featuring on the Nancy & Lee LP in 1968. It was the first of Sinatra and Hazlewood's string of popular duets.

Lyrically, "Summer Wine" describes a man, voiced by Hazlewood, who meets a woman, Sinatra, who notices his silver spurs and invites him to have wine with her. After heavy drinking, the man awakens hungover to find his spurs and money have been stolen by the mysterious woman; the subtext of which being they experienced intercourse and as repayment she misappropriated his "silver spurs a dollar and a dime".

The song was later covered by Demis Roussos, Bono of U2 with The Corrs, Ultima Thule, Gry with FM Einheit and his Orchestra, Anna Hanski & Lee Hazlewood, Scooter (on the 2000 album Sheffield), Moimir Papalescu and The Nihilists (with the male and female parts switched) and by Ville Valo & Natalia Avelon for the soundtrack of Das Wilde Leben. The version by Ville Valo & Natalia Avelon was the 4th best-selling single of 2007 in Germany and was certified Platinum by the BVMI.
