Nyt Liv - Hårde Tider

Continue from yesterdays 10th Years Celebration of the festival "Copenhell".

The second tune is "Hårde Tider" (Hard Times) that was written by NYT LIV (New Life) bassist Søren Hvidt, which is also played by NYT LIV with the help of musicians from RISING and HATESPHERE. Søren Hvidt says the following about the song: "We were given some framework for the project, and we have not tried that before. Among other things, there should be room for a guitar chase, a solo and some recognizability. Our songwriting is usually very dynamic and focuses on how we make room for the various instruments. After all, we are not a decidedly guitar solo band, so how should we find space for them? There should also be a chorus so that our musical concept was stretched a great deal. It is also one of the longest numbers we have ever been involved in making", says Hvidt.

Ti År I Helvede ep was released digitally on Friday, April 5 and on vinyl on April 19, 2019. The vinyl edition is severely limited and is available in 333 neon green and 333 black copies respectively - a total of 666 copies. And yes, the publishers, the record label Indisciplinarian, insist on calling it an ep, even though it only contains two songs, but that is to emphasize that these are two equal songs.

This years festival was takes place on days 19-22. June with major names like TOOL; SLIPKNOT and SCORPIONS.

Rising - White Heat

Epic metal quintet RISING takes an ambitious leap with the band’s fourth album "Sword And Scythe", a concept album on the history of mankind seen from the perspective of cosmic circularity, where the full potential of the band’s musical vision unfolds in a collection of songs of both progressive outlook, melodic mastery and fierce aggression.

RISING materialized in 2008 when the founding members, drummer Martin Niemann and guitarist Jacob Krogholt found themselves sharing the vision of a metal band encompassing all the traits making this particular music exciting to them: Aggression, heaviness, melody, musicianship and vivid narratives of primeval forces as well as concrete opposition towards oppressive structures and ideologies. After releasing two EP’s and two critically acclaimed albums as a three-piece balancing musically towards doom and sludge, Niemann and Krogholt regrouped as a five-piece adding new dimensions to their trademark sound. With the distinct, melodic vocals of lead singer Morten Grønnegaard and the further addition of bass player Bjarke Lassen and guitarist Anders Bo Rasmussen, RISING moved towards a more classic metal sound while retaining their unique blend of 70’s and 80’s heavy metal with the heavier aspects of more recent alternative variations on the genre. The new line-up recorded RISING’s third album "Oceans Into Their Graves" which saw the band renewed and roaming its natural habitat with a grandiose, crushingly heavy and melodic collection of songs. The album led the band to international critical acclaim, shows at Roskilde Festival and Copenhell in their native Denmark as well as touring nationally and abroad.

Now, RISING has completed their fourth album "Sword And Scythe", a monumental concept album consisting of ten songs and two short instrumentals produced by Jacob Bredahl and the band, while the album’s artwork is once again conceived and created by singer Morten Grønnegaard. Musically, the album shows an ensemble moving towards a more progressive direction while operating confidently within a wide range of dynamics and facets of their own compositional and playing ability. The album varies from fast, short songs to longer epics with proggy structures, continuously displaying a fierce heaviness balanced by a distinct sense of melody and finesse, not at least in the updated twin guitar arrangements. Furtherly, the album is enriched by a group of musical guests adding choir vocals, piano, trombone and also mellotron parts performed by renowned Danish rock musician Tim Christensen.

Conceptually, "Sword And Scythe" examines the progression and recession of mankind throughout the movements of history. As the sword and the scythe can be tools for fighting evil oppression and feeding hungry mouths, they are equally symbols of destruction and the greedy exploitation of our planet's resources. Since the dawn of man, the strive for power, wealth and growth have pushed many overambitious civilizations over the brink into the endless oblivion of forgotten history. The album tells the story of the rebirth and rise of humanity after a future total collapse of our global society. Will man learn from the mistakes of the past and evolve into something better and brighter, or are we forever destined to repeat history and steer towards our own perpetual ruin? The album proposes no answers, only questions as to who we are, what we are and what we might become.

Today's tune "White Heat", the third single from the fourth album "Sword And Scythe", enjoy!

Rainbow - Stargazer

Time flies, it's only to realize that we were soon sitting in the pimped electric wheelchair and talk music with other seniors. Today, four years ago, a real musical hero left the earth life, we will of course pay attention to this and play a song in his name.

Ronnie James Dio (born Ronald James Padavona, July 10, 1942 – May 16, 2010) was an American rock and heavy metal vocalist and songwriter. He fronted numerous groups including Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell, and his own band, Dio. He is credited with popularizing the "metal horns" hand gesture in metal culture. Dio sold over 47 million albums throughout his career. Todays tune "Stargazer" is the fifth track from Rainbow's 1976 album Rising. An epic song narrating the story of a wizard whose attempt to fly led to the enslavement of vast numbers of people, it is notable for its musical qualities as well, with the guitar and drum solos cited as important examples of the qualities of guitarist Ritchie Blackmore and drummer Cozy Powell.

The long, epic track with symphonic influences starts with a short drum solo by Cozy Powell, a "great drumming moment" frequently cited as an example of his skills. It features the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, a mellotron, and what Ritchie Blackmore called "a string thing all playing this half-Turkish Scale". Blackmore's solo, after the second verse, is in B Phrygian dominant scale, and is cited as "one of his best".

The song has been called a "morality tale", and its lyrics are written from the standpoint of a "slave in Egyptian times", according to lyricist Ronnie James Dio. They relate the story of the Wizard, an astronomer become "obsessed with the idea of flying", who enslaves a vast army of people to build him a tower from which he can take off and fly. The people hope for the day when their misery comes to an end, building the tower in harsh conditions ("In the heat and rain, with whips and chains; / to see him fly, so many died"). In the end, the wizard climbs to the top of the tower but, instead of flying, falls down and dies: "no sound as he falls instead of rising. / Time standing still, then there's blood on the sand". The next song, "A Light in the Black", continues the story of the people who have lost all purpose after the Wizard's death "until they see the Light in the Dark", according to Dio.

Rainbow - A Light In The Black

New week, which means a new album that may be titled "Record Of The Week". Yesterday when I was looking for the sunday classic and played some Thin Lizzy and after all search for the right classic, so for some reason will always Rainbow's "Rising" comes up, it shows up like a jack in the box. Wondering if it's the cover that makes you always pull it out, or it may be a magnetic field that surrounds the record, what do I know, there it came anyway, and there it lay completely untouched until Thin Lizzy was fully completed and it was time to put on a new album, which got to be "Rising", heck and holy moses what a record this is, the memories you get, hell of swing the band creates, do not know how many times I clicked the volume button during the play, but it was quite high at the end, all i can say it was a wonderful time all the 33 minutes or so.

Rising (also known as Rainbow Rising is the second hard rock/heavy metal album by Rainbow, released in 1976. This is the only album of the band that has reached Platinum status in the USA.

With Ritchie Blackmore retaining only Ronnie James Dio from the previous album, he recruited drummer Cozy Powell, bassist Jimmy Bain and keyboard player Tony Carey to complete the new line-up. Recorded in Munich in less than a month, the album was overseen by rock producer and engineer Martin Birch. The record was originally billed as Blackmore's Rainbow in the US.

Few of the album tracks made it into the band's live set: "Stargazer" and "Do You Close Your Eyes", written prior to the inaugural US tour in late 1975, featured in all the 1975 and 1976 shows, while "A Light in the Black" was dropped early in the 1976 tour, although it was reintroduced into the set during the Japanese dates. "Starstruck" was played in shortened form usually as part of "Man on the Silver Mountain".

According to the All Music Guide, Rising captured Blackmore and Dio at the peak of their creative powers...(it) chronicled both the guitarist's neo-classical metal compositions at their most ambitious, and the singer's growing fixation with fantasy lyrical themes — a blueprint he would adopt for his entire career thereafter.

The album showpiece, the 8 minute and 26 second piece "Stargazer", which features the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, originally had a keyboard intro found on the 2011 Deluxe Edition's "Rough Mix" version.

The first CD issue had a slightly different mix to that of the original LP, including, for example, a longer delay before the band entered after Carey's opening solo in "Tarot Woman", a longer play-out on "Run with the Wolf" and the track "Stargazer" had the vocals mixed without the delay, the extra synthesizer deleted and some of the phased sounds deleted. When remastered in 1999 the original vinyl mix was restored.

After several reschedulings, the album was finally released in Japan on April 5, 2011 as a 2 SHM-CD (Super High Material CD) Deluxe Remastered Edition. This limited edition reissue will only be released in a cardboard gatefold sleeve (mini LP-style paper jacket) featuring the "high-fidelity" SHM-CD manufacturing process (compatible with standard CD players) and is part of a two-album Rainbow cardboard sleeve reissue series featuring Rainbow Rising and Down to Earth. Both feature the unique-to-Japan obi strip and an additional insert.

Todays tune "A Light In The Black" is as you guessed taken from the album "Rising"

Here is a full show from 20/10 1977 in Munich, when Rainbow is performing. The electric rainbow that spanned the stage used so much power, it frequently interfered with the guitars and amplifiers.

In issue 1 of Kerrang! magazine, Rising was voted as the number 1 album of all time.

German thrash metal band Paradox (German band) covered the song "A Light in the Black" on the "Tales of the Weird" album (as bonus track).
