Marillion - Easter

Easter, also called Pascha (Greek, Latin) Påskdagen (In Swedish) or Resurrection Sunday, is a festival and holiday commemorating the resurrection of Jesus from the dead, described in the New Testament as having occurred on the third day after his burial following his crucifixion by the Romans at Calvary c. 30 AD. It is the culmination of the Passion of Jesus, preceded by Lent (or Great Lent), a 40-day period of fasting, prayer, and penance.

"Easter" is a song from English neo-progressive rock band MARILLIONs 1989 album "Seasons End", which became a UK Top 40 hit when issued as a single in 1990. Allmusic describe the song as "heartfelt" with an "imaginative electric-acoustic arrangement". As with many MARILLION songs, the album version features an extended guitar solo by Steve Rothery, which has become a fan-favorite, although it is heavily edited for the single version. The song was written by singer Steve Hogarth before he joined the band in 1989 and was inspired by The Troubles in Northern Ireland. The title is in reference to Easter 1916 by William Butler Yeats. Portions of the video were filmed on the Giants Causeway.

Enjoy this Sunday classic and easter beauty.

Rare Bird - Sympathy

And when you climb into your bed tonight
And when you lock and bolt the door
Just think of those out in the cold and dark
'Cause there's not enough love to go 'round

And sympathy is what we need my friend
And sympathy is what we need
And sympathy is what we need my friend
'Cause there's not enough love to go 'round
No, there's not enough love to go 'round

Now half the world hates the other half
And half the world has all the food
And half the world lies down and quietly starves
'Cause there's not enough love to go 'round

And sympathy is what we need my friend
And sympathy is what we need
And sympathy is what we need my friend
'Cause there's not enough love to go 'round
No, there's not enough love to go 'round...

Lyrics of today's Sunday Classic, a text that feels very important, even today, no matter if it was written 45 years ago.

"Sympathy" is a 1970 song by English rock band Rare Bird. It became a hit in continental Europe and sold one million copies worldwide.

The song was also recorded by Steve Rowland and The FAMILY DOGG and MARILLION. It was also recorded by Daliah Lavi in English and German language.

The cover art features a painting by Marc Harrison titled The Birdwoman Of Zartacla (later also used for the cover of the June 1981 issue of the Heavy Metal magazine).

Rare Bird was a progressive rock band founded in 1969. They were formed in England, but had more success in other European countries than they did at home. They are mostly remembered for the haunting, organ-based track "Sympathy".

Enjoy today's tune and don't forget does that doesn't have as good as we do.

Marillion - Easter

Easter is a song from English neo-progressive rock band MARILLIONs 1989 album Seasons End, which became a UK Top 40 hit when issued as a single in 1990. Allmusic describe the song as "heartfelt" with an "imaginative electric-acoustic arrangement". As with many MARILLION songs, the album version features an extended guitar solo by Steve Rothery, which has become a fan-favourite, although it is heavily edited for the single version. The song was written by singer Steve Hogarth before he joined the band in 1989 and was inspired by The Troubles in Northern Ireland. The title is in reference to Easter 1916 by William Butler Yeats. Portions of the video were filmed on the Giants Causeway.

Following the departure of Fish, MARILLION started to audition singers while writing the new album, and they eventually chose Steve Hogarth. The music for Seasons End was mostly finished by the time Hogarth joined MARILLION, and only a couple of songs on it actually have some pieces written by him, most notably "Easter" and "The Space". A number of the lyrics were written by John Helmer, who the band had commissioned before Hogarth joining. He would continue to contribute lyrics throughout the 1990s.

Much of the music on Seasons End had been composed while Fish was still in the band. The bonus disc of the 1999 re-issue of Clutching at Straws contains a number of nascent versions of songs that would end up on Seasons End with vocals and lyrics by Fish, these demos having been produced during the writing sessions for the ill-fated fifth studio album with Fish. (A number of the lyrical concepts from these demos, such as The Voice in the Crowd, would later resurface on Fish's debut studio album, Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors.)

The album was produced jointly by MARILLION and Nick Davis (who would go on to work with Genesis and associated acts). Singles

As with MARILLIONs previous two studio albums, three singles were released from Seasons End. The first single was "Hooks in You" in August 1989, followed by "The Uninvited Guest" in November and "Easter" in March 1990.

Todays tune "Easter" is taken from the fifth studio album "Seasons End", released in 1989. The album was the first to feature current lead singer Steve Hogarth, following the departure of former vocalist Fish in late 1988. Have a happy Easter and enjoy the tune!

Fish - State Of Mind

Derek William Dick, better known as Fish, (born 25 April 1958, Dalkeith, Midlothian, Scotland) is a Scottish singer, lyricist and occasional actor, best known as the former lead singer of the neo-progressive rock band Marillion.

About a week ago this gentleman was standing on the stage at Debaser here in Stockholm. He really hand out himself during the evening, a lot of stories told about his childhood, the war, etc. A very entertaining evening indeed.

Derek William Dick was born in Edinburgh, Scotland and grew up in Dalkeith. The son of Robert and Isabella, Fish was educated at King's Park primary school and then Dalkeith High School. He was inspired by the music of many of the rock artists of the late 1960s and early 1970s, including Genesis, Pink Floyd, The Moody Blues, Van der Graaf Generator, The Kinks, T. Rex, David Bowie, Argent and The Alex Harvey Band. The first band he saw live was Yes at Usher Hall, Edinburgh, in 1974. As well as his love for music, he was also a voracious reader, and his literary inspirations included Jack Kerouac, Truman Capote, Robert Burns and Dylan Thomas.

After working as a petrol pump attendant, gardener and forestry worker, Fish came to the public's attention in 1981 with the British rock group Marillion. The band achieved chart success in the UK, attaining top-ten hits in 1985 with "Kayleigh" and "Lavender", and again in 1987 with "Incommunicado". In 1988, Fish left Marillion in order to pursue his solo career. Many of Fish's later works contain lengthy spoken word lyrics, shorter examples of which can be heard on earlier Marillion albums. Vocally, Fish has sometimes been compared to Peter Gabriel, lead singer of Genesis in the 1970s. Music journalist David Hepworth described his voice as a “conflation of Roger Daltrey and Peter Gabriel”. Peter Hammill of Van der Graaf Generator was also a major influence on his songwriting and vocal delivery, which is especially notable on the first two Marillion albums.

According to Fish himself, his nickname originates from the amount of time he spent in the bathtub. Fish married his first wife Tamara Nowy who appeared on the "Kayleigh" promo video on 25 July 1987 (divorced 2003) and had one daughter, Tara Rowena (Taz) born 1 January 1991, who is currently a model for 'Colours Agency' and 2012 was Scottish model of the year nominee.

Fish setup:
Derek William Dick (Fish) – Lead Vocals
Robin Boult – Electric/Acoustic Guitars
Steve Vantsis – Bass Guitars; Keyboards; Backing Vocals
Foss Patterson – Keyboards; Backing Vocals
Gavin Griffiths – Drums

Todays tune "State of Mind" was the first solo single by Fish, released about a year after his departure from Marillion and preceding the release of his first solo album Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors. It is also the first-ever record Fish did outside Marillion except for his 1986 collaboration with Tony Banks on the single "Shortcut to Somewhere" from the Banks album Soundtracks.  The tune has some years on it's neck so it's suits perfect as a Sunday Classic.

The cover was designed by Mark Wilkinson, who had created all of Marillion's artwork until Fish's departure, and has continued to work with Fish since then. The cover shows close-ups of the faces of the couple that also features on the cover of Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors with an hourglass between them. The back-cover features an illustration of an atomic explosion inside the hourglass. The single was also the first to feature the circular "Fish" logo designed by Wilkinson, which has been used on all solo releases since then (except for the 1997 album Sunsets on Empire and the singles from it.)

Marillion - Kayleigh

Marillion, the British rock band are out on tour and visited Sweden for a gig at Debaser here in Stockholm on Sunday. Have actually been able to see them play live that few times and this was a very high class performance, a band made up of amazing musicians who even get a really good balance live.

The sound was excellent, the light was cruel and joy of playing was at its peak with lots of humor, a great evening in other words, the fans were totally blessed. Lots of nice tunes got played, see set list below.

Marillion formed in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, England, in 1979. Their recorded studio output since 1982 is composed of sixteen albums generally regarded in two distinct eras, delineated by the departure of original frontman Fish in late 1988, and the subsequent arrival of replacement Steve Hogarth in early 1989. All four albums released with Fish were commercial successes, and the band released a string of top ten singles including their best-known worldwide hit, 1985's "Kayleigh".

While major hit singles proved elusive under Hogarth's new leadership, his first album with the band, Seasons End, was a hit, and albums continued to chart high until the dissipation of their mainstream popularity in the late 1990s. The band made a comeback from the mid- to late-2000s, achieving their first top ten singles with Hogarth, including the international 2004 hit, "You're Gone", and enjoying increased album sales.

Todays tune "Kayleigh" was the group's most successful single in terms of chart position. The single was kept from the UK Number 1 spot by charity single "You'll Never Walk Alone" by supergroup The Crowd in the summer of 1985.

Kayleigh the official video, with Fish on vocal.

A never version of the song, recorded over 3 nights at the Marillion Weekend 2009. And here you get three songs in a row. "Kayleigh - Lavender - Heart of Lothian"

Fish has said that his writing the song was 'his way of apologizing to some of the women he had dated in the past.'Although the lead singer and lyricist of the band, Fish, had at one point dated a woman whose forenames were Kay Lee, the song was more a composite of several different women with whom he had had relationships.

The guitar hook line through the verse came about, according to Steve Rothery, from him demonstrating to his then girlfriend what effects a chorus and a delay pedal could add to a guitar's sound. Rothery recorded the song on a chorused Stratocaster guitar, using the pick and his second and third fingers to play it. The album version features an extended guitar solo by Rothery, 27 seconds of which is edited for the single version.

Here are some pictures from the evening!
