Allegaeon - Roundabout

Thursday, time for a cover.

"Roundabout" is a song by the English progressive rock band YES from their fourth studio album "Fragile", released in November 1971. It was written by singer Jon Anderson and guitarist Steve Howe and produced by the band and Eddy Offord. The song originated when the band were on tour and travelled from Aberdeen to Glasgow, and went through many roundabouts on the way.

Today's cover is made by the American extreme metal band ALLEGAEON from Fort Collins, Colorado.

ALLEGAEON embraced their love of prog last year, delivering a blistering and killer cover of the YES classic "Roundabout".

Singer Riley McShane said, “In this cover we try to showcase not only those influences, but also how we as individual musicians have been impacted by the music of yesteryear and how that impact has helped us to develop our own styles of playing.” It’s an impressive nod to a period of music that definitely impacted the band. The tune was released on April 3, 2020.

Yes - Roundabout

"Roundabout" is a song by the English rock band YES from their fourth studio album "Fragile", released in November 1971. It was written by singer Jon Anderson and guitarist Steve Howe and produced by the band and Eddy Offord. The song originated when the band were on tour and travelled from Aberdeen to Glasgow, and went through many roundabouts on the way.

YES lead singer Jon Anderson and guitarist Steve Howe wrote this song near the end of a tour when they were traveling in Scotland. They were in the back of a van going from Aberdeen to Glasgow when the song came together.

Anderson had smoked marijuana during the trip, "so everything was vivid and mystical". Anderson added: "It was a cloudy day, we couldn't see the top of the mountains. We could only see the clouds because it was sheer straight up ... I remember saying, "Oh, the mountains–look! They're coming out of the sky!"

The band had been touring for about a month, and Anderson was looking forward to his imminent return to London, where he could once again see his wife at the time, Jennifer. The lyrics, "Twenty four before my love you'll see I'll be there with you" indicate that he is just 24 hours away from being with her again.

This was the bands breakthrough hit and one of their most well-known songs, but the band wasn't looking for a hit at the time. The album version runs 8:29, but it was edited to 3:27 for release as a single, which climbed to #13 on the US Hot 100, giving the band their biggest hit until they eclipsed it with "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" in 1983.

The song was released as an edited single in the US in January 1972 with "Long Distance Runaround", another track from Fragile, as the B-side.

So enjoy today's tune "Roundabout" performed at Yessongs in 1973

Syd Arthur - Apricity

SYD ARTHUR have released a new album "Apricity", today we will play the title track of this folk, Krautrock and saucer-eyed psychedelia jazz band from Canterbury, UK. The band was formed in 2003 by brothers frontman Liam and bassist Joel Magill, drummer Fred Rother and violinist Raven Bush. Rother was officially replaced by the Magills' younger brother Josh in 2016.

SYD ARTHUR is a group who’ve opened for PAUL WELLER and YES and are about to tour with JAKE BUGG.

Today's tune "Apricity", the title track from the new album. It was released on 21 October, 2016. Directed by Liam Magill, Filmed & Edited by Gavin Bush & Projections by Oliver ChiltonP. The Video shows SYD ARTHUR hunched over their instruments playing in near darkness, lit only by flashing shapes and amorphous blobs of colour. It’s suggestive of that clip in most BBC4 documentaries about the ’60s, the one with PINK FLOYD at the UFO club lit only by flashing shapes and amorphous blobs of colour. "Apricity" is oddball, trippy pop music that leapfrogs boundaries and eras.

Yes - Heart of the Sunrise

Sunday, time for a classic.

"Heart of the Sunrise" is a progressive rock song by British band YES. It is the closing track on their fourth album, 1971's "Fragile". The compositional credits go to Jon Anderson, Bill Bruford, and Chris Squire, though keyboardist Rick Wakeman contributed some uncredited sections.

The song eventually rose to become the band's fourth most-played song, and appears on Yessongs, Classic Yes, In a Word: Yes (1969 - ), and many other studio and live retrospectives.

According to Anderson, the song is about being lost in the city. This was explained on many tours. On the Big Generator tour, Anderson says that the song is about the power and energy of the sunrise. In 1978, however, he said the song was about the power of love. Sometimes, he makes other comments. For example, on the October 16, 1971 show, Anderson states that the organ in the song is inaudible and will be performed without it. He further notes that the organ is "one of the best jokes in the business."

Today's tune "Heart of the Sunrise" is taken from the live album "Live At Montreux 2003" was released 2007. It is a live recording of the group's headlining concert at the Montreux Jazz Festival on 14 July 2003. The performance was filmed and is also available on DVD/Blu-ray. Check out the churning, bass-heavy riff attack by Chris Squire. He will be sorely missed (he passed away 27 June 2015).

Beardfish - Voluntary Slavery

Monday! That means it's time to present this week's album! Today it's the Swedish progressive rock band "Beardfish" and their latest album "Void" that receiving the honor to take place on the Tune Of The Days Record of the Week.

But first some history, Beardfish is a Swedish progressive rock band formed in 2001. Their style resembles progressive rock bands from the 1970s, such as Yes and Genesis. The band was signed by InsideOut Music after releasing two albums independently; they have since released five more albums, so seven in total!

Beardfish is comprised of Rikard Sjoblom (vocals/guitars/keyboards), David Zackrisson (guitars), Magnus Ostgren (drums) and Robert Hansen (bass).

The band is out touring atm, the started Sept. 9 2012, Beardfish will be the support act for all European dates for the band Flying Colors.

This weeks album "Void" As previous releases a unique experience which gives the listener memorable melodies, brilliant playing, often very clever lyrics. Since 2006, the band has released seven albums, more than one each year, pretty good in my eyes! And every album is very good in their own way. The Void is just another excellent album in the band’s ever-expanding catalogue.

I will not be particularly deep about this album, but will leave you to dig down in it. It's is released on Spotify, to hook it up and listen. The Void demands attention. Each song differs from the last, offering focal points of an endless variety to keep you interested throughout. The Void is born in to a line of great albums with fantastic reputations, and fails to break tradition. Beardfish push the boundaries of progressive rock delivering their most hard-edged and ominous record to date. Seven albums deep and keeping the musical dialogue going strong!

Studio albums:

Från En Plats Du Ej Kan Se (2003)
The Sane Day (2006)
Sleeping in Traffic: Part One (2007)
Sleeping in Traffic: Part Two (2008)
Destined Solitaire (2009)
Mammoth (2011)
The Void (2012)

Todays tune "Voluntary Slavery" taken from The Void, kicks off with heavy metal guitar playing, thumping bass lines, wailing drum fills and enticing vocal harmonies. Enjoy!
