Monday, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"
"To Drink From The Night Itself" is the sixth album from the Swedish melodic death metal innovators, AT THE GATES. The album was released on May 18 via Century Media. Produced with Russ Russell (NAPALM DEATH, THE HAUNTED, DIMMU BORGIR) at Parlour Studios in the U.K.
"To Drink From The Night Itself" is the follow-up 2014's "At War With Reality" features conceptual artwork created by Costin Chioreanu of Twilight 13 Media, who previously worked with AT THE GATES on the band's last album.
The departure of the founding member Anders Björler has not caused the band to fall down into the abyss. Instead, his brother Jonas has taken one step up and grabbed the lead in the making of a powerful new album, already on the first tune you will recognize the band, the musical arrangements are classic AT THE GATES style, hard, heavy and totally crashing, the sound is deeper and darker, the melodies are carefully crafted by musically genius.
Jonas Stålhammar (BOMBS OF HADES, THE LURKING FEAR) replaces Anders Björler on guitar and he does really a great job here with twin partner Martin Larsson. Tomas Lindberg vocals have not changed much, it still sounds harsh and vicious with feelings of despair and frustration. And deliciously playing by the drummer Adrian Erlandsson, that shines with clever beat changes that give a different and seductive rhythm.
The heroic instrumental “Der Widerstand” (of the resistance) begins the journey into the concept of the album which uses the epic novel “The Aesthetics of Resistance” by Peter Weiss for inspiration. The novel tells a story of Nazi resistance in Europe during the 30’s and 40’s with a focus on how art can be used to influence and define the struggles of subjugation and opposition. The album closes with the magnificent piece "The Mirror Black" and I realize that this is the end of a stunning album, well-done guys!
Sum: "To Drink From The Night Itself" is nothing more than a technically accomplished work of art and it consolidates AT THE GATESs status as one of Sweden's premier melodic death metal bands.
Enjoy today's tune!
