Heavy Water - Red Brick City

HEAVY WATER, which features SAXONS Biff Byford and his son Seb Byford, are to release their debut album "Red Brick City" on July 23rd 2021 via Silver Lining Music. The album features ten songs and takes you on a journey through influences and invention, which has you hooked from the first note.

That rock and singing runs in the family is clear in the Byford camp, both the heavy metal father Biff with a marvelous vocals along with his son that also posses the gift as a brilliant singer Byford Junior is.

"Red Brick City" is very obviously the product of lockdown frustration, an album that turned out to be a great output, nothing lightweight about these songs, nor anything frivolous or throwaway about its sound.

Slathered in classic Rock ‘n’ Roll soul and soaked in gritty, hard-baked riffs, and topped off with rich, raunchy vocals… Welcome to HEAVY WATER and their debut album "Red Brick City".

The foundations for HEAVY WATER’s sound are set in both that incredible father/son chemistry and a lifetime of know-how and experiences. Take the title track -and first single- "Red Brick City": all steam and smoulder wrapped around a riff SOUNDGARDEN would’ve been proud of.

“We decided to do something together in these dark times and the family came together to help get this album off the ground” explained Seb and Biff.

Seb Byford recorded and engineered "Red Brick City" at the Big Silver Barn in York, UK, while the drums were recorded by Ben Hammond at Reel Recording Studio in York. Seb produced the album with Biff, and Jacky Lehmann mastered. "Red Brick City" sees Seb take the reins on guitar and vocals, with Biff taking up the bass and vocal mantle. Tom Witts plays the drums, while Dave Kemp rounds out the Heavy Water line-up on keyboards and saxophone. A rich, lustrous ride through profoundly rewarding rock waters. To cap off this family affair, the packaging photos were taken by Steph Byford.

“We had great fun doing this album, working together on the songs and recording during lockdown,” concluded Biff and Seb. “It’s all recorded without samples or profiles... just loud and proud!”

Today's tune "Red Brick City" it the title tune from this album, enjoy!

Saxon - Carpe Diem

Monday, time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

The British heavy metal icons SAXON, the true NWOBHM veterans have released the band's 23rd studio album, "Carpe Diem", which easily picks up this fine award.

The band's albums releases during the last 20 years have remained consistent, with a new album every few years mixed with a tour. The quality is always been high and kept a steady stream of well-written anthems. "Carpe Diem is business as usual for British metal institution SAXON, and business is good.

"Carpe Diem", really shows off that SAXON still has it, the sound, the tunes are true to their legendary status and keep a good flow true out the whole album. Biff Byford's vocal range is still in full bloom and it's remarkable that it still is in such good shape since his heart attack in September 2019. Paul Quinn guitars are as amazing as always and he really gives us some great solos here Nigel Glocker keeps the pace and he really knows how to do it. There are several great tracks on this record. Like the opening title tune "Carpe Diem (Seize The Day)" that really follows the SAXON blueprint, heavy riffs along with catchy lyrics. "Age Of Steam" is a powerful piece that stands out a little, with really cool riffs, and historical lyrics. "The Pilgrimage" is a slower tune, half pace harmonies that could be filed under "ballad", to then be replaced by the tempo booster with the brilliant "Dambusters", excellent guitars in a high speed to be followed up by "Remember The Fallen", "Super Nova", "All For One" and "Black Is The Night" that keeps the chugging high. The album closes up with the 10th track "Living On The Limit", which throws us back to the band's history. Great ending to a nice release by SAXON.

"Carpe Diem" is was released on February 4th via Silver Lining Music. Produced by Andy Sneap (JUDAS PRIEST, EXODUS, ACCEPT among many others) at Backstage Recording Studios in Derbyshire with Byford and Sneap mixing and mastering, "Carpe Diem" strikes the ear as one of the most essential British metal statements of the last few years and not lacking in pace or bite, an album which will ignite the joy in stalwart supporters and attract a whole new legion to the Saxon fold.

Sum: If you like SAXON, then you will love “Carpe Diem”!

Today's tune "The Pilgrimage", is taken from “Carpe Diem”. “Pilgrimage is a fantastic word. People go on pilgrimages all the time, not just in a historical or religious sense, but it’s about going and visiting either a place that you feel is special in your life or somebody that’s meant something in your life. You can go on a pilgrimage to go see your great grandfather who died in the First World War for instance. They’re journeys of great weight and importance.” Enjoy!

Saxon - Carpe Diem (Seize The Day)

The Mighty SAXON have announce a new Album 𝕮𝖆𝖗𝖕𝖊 𝕯𝖎𝖊𝖒 and unleash the video and single for the titanic title track 𝕮𝖆𝖗𝖕𝖊 𝕯𝖎𝖊𝖒 (𝕾𝖊𝖎𝖟𝖊 𝕿𝖍𝖊 𝕯𝖆𝖞) 🦅⚔️ Pre-order:https://smarturl.it/SAXONCARPEDIEM

“In Latin it means 'Seize The Day' and I think it’s a great thing to say; it’s what the Romans used to say to each other on a regular basis, apparently, never having met one, I wouldn’t know! But we’re gonna do the Seize the Day world tour, the album’s "Carpe Diem", this song’s called “Carpe Diem (Seize the Day)” and it’s such a powerful thing to say.” Bx

Life hath no fury like a legend in full roar… and on February 4th, 2022, SAXON will show just that to the world when they release their 23rd studio album, "Carpe Diem", through Silver Lining Music, serving notice to anyone who ever felt otherwise that they remain both vanguards and masters of British Metal. Comprised of 10 titanic tracks bristling with steel-clad riffery and proud intent, the Barnsely (UK) born band draw on a variety of ingredients from their career to forge what is their most dynamic release in many a year.

"It all starts with the riff,” says front man and co-founder Biff Byford, "if the riff speaks to me, then we’re on our way. It’s a very intense album, and that’s all down to the fact that the essence of a great metal song is the riff that starts it, and this album has loads of them."

Today's tune is the title track’s roll-back attack, this is Saxon at their purest and most definitive; aggressively parading the pure metal flag and imploring fans old and new to gather and celebrate the very best of both SAXON and the genre itself.

Produced by Andy Sneap (JUDAS PRIEST, EXODUS, ACCEPT etc.) at Backstage Recording Studios in Derbyshire with Byford and Sneap mixing and mastering, "Carpe Diem" strikes the ear as one of the most essential British metal statements of the last few years and not lacking in pace or bite, an album which will ignite the joy in stalwart supporters and attract a whole new legion to the SAXON fold.

“We want every album we make to go platinum,” says Biff defiantly. "We never make an album that we don’t expect to be fantastic because there are no laurels around here, and as a band, we’re always trying to do something a little bit new, a little bit daring. I love fast metal like “Princess of the Night” and “20,000 Feet”, and I try and bring that style of SAXON into the music now, but in a more modern style. We don’t sound like an old band on records because we’re not sitting back on our past success, we’re always trying to make a great album.”

The genesis of "Carpe Diem’s" fierce intensity lies in two extremely significant life events - “It’s been a difficult two years,” offers Biff with considerable understatement, “because I had the heart attack back in September 2019, so things went a bit pear-shaped for the band. And then Covid hit two or three months later, but luckily, we started writing and recording this album before Covid. We did the drums in Germany and we did the guitars in various places. I was doing a lot of writing while I was in the hospital bed, and we spent quite a long time writing and arranging the ideas that we all had. I do think it’s a very intense album, and maybe some of that intensity comes from the frustration of not being able to do anything in the Covid period.”

Biff Byford - Scarborough Fair

"School Of Hard Knocks", is the first solo album of legendary SAXON's frontman Biff Byford, the album was released in February this year. Biff has released a video for the tune "Scarborough Fair" taken from his debut solo album, see it below. The tune is a bit odd, not the common thing that you have heard, so check it out.

"School of Hard Knocks" is available to buy now at: http://hyperurl.co/SchoolOfHardKnocks

The English North is everything you saw in Game of Thrones and more. It is the true heart of England, the region where its soul resides, and Biff Byford has earned the right to be considered its true heavy metal bard.

In his first-ever solo album, Biff takes on not just tales and stories from his heart and soul, but also investigates the Middle Ages and Medieval history amongst other subjects.

"School Of Hard Knocks" was produced by Biff Byford, recorded by Jacky Lehmann at Brighton Electric Studios in Brighton (UK) and mixed at Queen Street Studios in Stockholm (Sweden) by Mats Valentin. The album also features guest appearances by Phil Campbell (MOTÖRHEAD/Phil Campbell & The Bastard Sons), Alex Holzwarth (RHAPSODY OF FIRE, TURILLI / LIONE RHAPSODY), Nick Barker (VOICES), Dave Kemp (WAYWARD SONS) and Nibbs Carter (SAXON).

On "School Of Hard Knocks", Byford worked with Fredrik Åkesson (OPETH) on guitars, Christian Lundqvist on drums and Gus Macricostas on bass (Biff himself played a spot of four-string thunder too!).

Enjoy today's tune!

"Dallas 1 PM" concerns the assassination of John F. Kennedy. "We thought, 'Should we put one shot in there or should we put three?'" recalled singer Biff Byford. "In the end we went down the conspiracy theory route and had three shots."

Saxon - Thunderbolt

Monday, new week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

"Thunderbolt" is the 22nd album by the British Nwobhm band SAXON, 22 album, that’s a hell of an accomplishment. The first album came out in 1979, almost 40 years ago.

They are considered one of the classic metal acts and have influenced many bands such as METALLICA, MEGADETH, SLAYER, ANTHRAX, TESTAMENT, MÖTLEY CRUE, PANTERA among others.

During the 1980s SAXON established themselves as one of Europe's biggest metal acts. The band tours regularly and have sold more than 13 million albums worldwide.

"Thunderbolt" is a Storming Smashing Thundering collection of tunes they have crafted with Producer Andy Sneap. Stand clear and fasten your seat belts! "Thunderbolt" is the follow-up to 2015’s "Battering Ram", the same formula is used, classic hard-charging heavy metal in the traditional NWOBHM style. The album opens up with the instrumental intro "Olympus Rising" and continues with the title tune "Thunderbolt" where the band puts in a higher gear, commanding guitar riff by Paul Quinn and Doug Scarratt, hard hitting drums by Nigel Glockler, quick fingers on the bass strings by Nibbs Carter and the peculiar voice by Byford on this galloping rocker, it's also the main stamp we hear throughout the album, including tunes like "The Secret of Flight", "Speed Merchants", or the marching "Sniper" and the Motörhead tribute "They Played Rock and Roll". The dramatic tale of the creature of the night in "Nosferatu (The Vampires Waltz)" is horror rocker with organ intro before it shapes into a pompous creation. Byford sings like a god on this track. "Predator" is a real monster, hard and heavy guitar-oriented tune with a grizzled rhythm section and a guest growls by AMON AMARTHs Johan Hegg makes this a tune that stands out from the standard NWOBHM style. The mythological stories in "Sons of Odin" and "A Wizard’s Tale" where we get powerful vocals, strong drums and excellent guitars. The album closes up with "Roadie’s Song", a tune about the tour life for the band, a nice ending.

Sum "Thunderbolt" is a solid rocker with classic catchy tunes, a delight for SAXON fans and traditional heavy metal enthusiasts alike.

Today's tune is the title tune from "Thunderbolt", released February 2nd, enjoy!

Tune Of The Day - Top 50 - 2015 (40-31)

Here is the second batch of 10 records that we have choose to qualify to the best albums that 2015 have given us. Here is the albums between 40 - 31. Today's tune will be publish later on this evening. So here we go!
40. Saxon - Battering Ram

SAXON, the classic NWOBHM band that year after year give us a new record, "Battering Ram" is the twenty-first studio album that really rocks!

39. The Night Flight Orchestra - Skyline Whispers
"Skyline Whispers" is an excellent album that have a great swing where the 70’s muscle meets the 80's poprock.

38. Uncle Acid - The Night Creeper
With "The Night Creeper" does UNCLE ACID spreads their wings and explore some new sounds, but the main psychedelic horror is still the basic and the sound is still very unique UNCLE ACID.

37. Black Vulpine - Hidden Places
"Hidden Places" is an excellent album that mixes desert grooves with occult/doom vibes and themes.

36. Tau Cross - Tau Cross

Rob "The Baron" Millers project TAU CROSS have given us a cleaver album with lots of variety.

35. Lik - Mass Funeral Evocation
A band that loves DISMEMBER makes a record just for fun that ends up to be a real killer.

34. Jess and the Ancient Ones – Second Psychedelic Coming: The Aquarius Tapes
The Finnish psychedelic rock band have released another flawless occult rock masterpiece.

33. Thåström - Den Morronen
Den Morronen is the more darker follow up to his previous master piece "Beväpna dig med vingar".

32. Paradise Lost - The Plague Within
"The Plague Within" is a really strong PARADISE LOST, a record that grows every new spin.

31. Avatarium - The Girl With The Raven Mask
"The Girl With The Raven Mask" is the second release from the doom master Leif Edling. Here the creativity have been very high and created a brilliant album, but with a late release and to few spins to climb higher. It's a position that I'm sure I will regret.

Today's tune will be posted later this evening. Cheers
