Patti Smith - Smells Like Teen Spirit

Patti Smith and US string group Kronos Quartet have received the 2011 Polar Music Prize.

King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden presented both artists with their one million Swedish kronor (150752.25 USD) prize at the ceremony in Stockholm yesterday (August 30).

The Polar Prize, the highest award in Swedish music, is usually shared by a pop artist and a classical musician.

Official announcement of the Polar Music Prize 2011 - Patti Smith

Smith, generally considered the godmother of punk, thanked her fans and band members, said she was "humbled and inspired" to receive the prize. She also appealed for the audience to "turn their hearts, minds and resources" to the famine in Africa.

San Francisco-based Kronos Quartet incorporate avant-garde rock and elements of world music into their sound. Smith, meanwhile, describes her music - including the landmark album 'Horses' - as "three chord rock merged with the power of the word". Her best-known song is perhaps 'Because The Night', co-written by Bruce Springsteen.

The Polar Music Prize was founded by Stig Anderson, the manager of Swedish pop group ABBA, in 1989.

It is awarded to individuals, groups or institutions in recognition of exceptional achievements in the creation and advancement of music. Last year's prize was shared by Ennio Morricone and Bjork.

Paul McCartney, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Stevie Wonder are among past winners.

Todays tune "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (A cover of Nirvana) is taken from the album "Twelve", released April 17, 2007. As the title suggests, the album contains twelve tracks, all of which are cover versions. The Tune also includes in Pattis latest release "Outside Society" that was released a few days ago, Aug 23 to be more precise.

Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inductee Patti Smith raises the curtain on "Outside Society", a new collection of her signature songs on the Arista and Columbia labels. The landmark 18-song release marks the first single-CD collection to span Patti's entire body of recorded work. The chronologically arranged tracks move from 1975 (her debut album, Horses, with "Gloria" and "Free Money") through 2007 (Twelve, with her cover of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit"). Also released on vinyl as a double-LP set, "Outside Society" is available everywhere.

The music on "Outside Society" is newly remastered by award-winning engineer Greg Calbi and Patti Smith band member Tony Shanahan. The CD booklet will feature brief recollections of each song written by Patti, who personally supervised the choices.

Of "Because The Night," for example, Patti writes: "Bruce Springsteen gave me a great gift in allowing me to lend verses to his beautifully constructed anthem. My contribution was written for my future husband, Fred 'Sonic' Smith. Though we have performed it hundreds of times, the strong response it draws always makes it fresh and exciting to sing."

This evening she and her band will perform at Stockholms Konserthus, im sure it will be an fantastic evening. Doors at 19:30 in the Big Hall.

Patti Smith visits Ljusgården on Sept. 1 at. 12:30 to exclusively in Sweden sign hers acclaimed and award-winning autobiography, Just Kids, and her new compilation album Outside Society.

Just Kids is a vivid portrayal and a unique chronicle of New York's diverse cultural scene in the early '70s, with artists like Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Andy Warhol and Jimi Hendrix who all give their impressions of the story.

Patti Smith opens in a personal way up a window into her life as a young, struggling artist, and depicts a beautiful way of his friendship with the artist Robert Mapplethorpe.

The book and the compilation album will be on sale in Ljusgården.

Primal Scream - Movin On Up

Primal Scream are a Scottish alternative rock band originally formed in 1982 in Glasgow by Bobby Gillespie (vocals) and Jim Beattie and now based in London.

Twenty years and six albums after release will now Primal Scream play the whole "Screamadelica" from beginning to end. In addition to an expanded lineup, which among other things, includes a brass section and percussionist, so directed the concert of the Turner Prize nominee Jim Lambie and initiated by the legendary DJ Andrew Weatherall (who, among other things remixed Bjork, Siouxsie Sioux, New Order and others). This evening they stand on the stage at Münchenbryggeriet here in Stockholm.

As well as the revived Screamadelica tour, the band re-released the album in a 20th Anniversary edition on 14 March, with the remastering done by Bobby Gillespie and frequent collaborator, Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine.

Screamadelica is a studio album and was their first to be a commercial success. It was released on 23 September 1991. The album was released to widespread critical acclaim, and is frequently acknowledged as one of the best albums of the 1990s. Screamadelica also won the first Mercury Music Prize in 1992.

The album was a massive departure from the band's early indie rock sound, drawing inspiration from the house music scene (and associated drugs) that was becoming popular at the time of its production. The band enlisted house DJs Andrew Weatherall and Terry Farley on producing duties, although the album also contained a wide range of other influences including gospel and dub.

The album's title track did not appear on the album itself; the ten minute dance track was also produced by Andrew Weatherall and sung by Denise Johnson. It appears on the Dixie Narco EP released in 1992, and is featured in the opening credits of the now rare Screamadelica VHS video tape.

The album cover for Screamadelica was painted by Creation Records' in-house artist Paul Cannell, who died in 2005. Screamadelica was among ten album covers chosen by the Royal Mail for a set of "Classic Album Cover" postage stamps issued in January 2010.

Todays tune "Movin' On Up" that opens up the album in C major and is similar in style to the Rolling Stones. The song features Bobby Gillespie's vocals in the verse section with a gospel chorus, accompanied throughout by acoustic guitar, electric guitar and percussion. The song borrows from the lyrics to Can's "Yoo Doo Right". The lyrics are similar to those of Amazing Grace. The single "Movin' on Up" was the band's breakthrough hit.

Lykke Li - I Follow Rivers

Yesterday was a festival, more specifically, Propaganda! A package crammed with music. At that stage I was working on, jostling bands like Those Dancing Days, Jenny Wilson, Säkert Midlake and Lykke Li. A very nice event, as usual, when this festival takes place. Going to do a little summary of the bands that played on the scene I was working on the mixing of images:)

First was the Stockholm band Danicing Those Days, these young ladies did a great performance with their danceable pop. Had some bad luck At the beginning when guitarist shoulderstrap released and was trying to play until rescue came and the gaffa rescued the rest of the gig. Drummer Cissi's probably one of the coolest drummers in the girl band I've ever seen, she pounded the skins as if it was the last thing she would do in life.

Then it was time for Jenny Wilson and her Tensta Gospel Choir to perform. It was actually quite impressive with the choirs. Swinging ok.

After that it was Annika Norlin and her Säkert's to get up on stage. She is a Swedish pop artist who makes music under the artist names Hello Saferide (in English) and Säkert! (in Swedish). Her Swedish songs get the audience to sing along.

A small view when Säkert's backline tech "Joel" trying to work during Jenny Wilson's gig. A bit difficult to see when so much smoke should pass the visual field.

A view of the audience and excited photographers.

American band Midlake was number four to enter the scene. That this is a band that certainly is best suited during a little more intimate relationships than the festival, it could be seen almost immediately, the band use only a fourth part of the stage, very compact, I must say, but they did an awesome gig, really beautiful with their folksih element mixed with easy country rock.

Lykke Li who was the evening's headliner on the main stage for a night of very smoky but spectacular show.

Todays tune "I Follow Rivers" is a song by Swedish recording artist Lykke Li from her second studio album, Wounded Rhymes. Produced by Björn Yttling of Peter Bjorn and John, it was released in Sweden on 21 January 2011 as the album's second single. The music video was directed by Tarik Saleh and features Li in a black robe and veil chasing a man (Fares Fares) through a snowy landscape.

Other Lives - For 12

Today I am on Popaganda with "Midlake", "Lykke Li", "Säkert", "Those Dancing Days," "Jenny Wilson" and "Blomman" Yesterday played bands like "Arcade Fire", "The Go! Team "," Saint Etienne "and others. That this is a festival that is as related to Way Out West noticeable apparently, music wise the same but with different names. Had probably wanted a little more off the rock touch of bands but you can not have everything in this world. A band that I had booked, if i would have been the bandbooker for this festival is "Other Lives".

Other Lives is an American indie rock band from Stillwater, Oklahoma. The band formed in 2004 as Kunek and released one album in 2006 under that name. Other Lives' self-titled album was released physically April 7, 2009. Other Lives latest record titled "Tamer Animals" that is due out on August 29, 2011 in UK/Europe.

The new record is a pretty fantastic story, filled with orchestral landscapes and a fine singing voice that is the quilt from a new made bed. The album is dark and spooky, a sweeping sense of an autumn overcast day in Stockholm.

"For 12" is the first single from the album, a mysterious, dreamy but incredibly beautiful thing.

Oh I was in the dark age searching for the ones in my mind.
But I had hit the ground runnin. Steady as you go. I don't mind. I'm still here today.
Spouting hymns and buzzing rhymes and forever talking when it aint so kind.
But it feels like forever on the run. When your mind turns to fiction.
I had took the long way. I was in the heat. I don't mind. I'm so far away.
But it feels like forever on the run.
Nudging the ghost from the skull. A night without sleep.
Vibration comes first to the head and last to the feet.
Spouting hymns and buzzing rhymes and forever talking when it aint so kind.
But it feels like forever on the run. When your mind turns to fiction.

Gösta Berlings Saga - 354

Yes then it was Friday again, a weekend with lots of music and one birthday party, as one family member having her birthday today, it is the smallest one that has lost her first tooth and turns 5 years. This is of course will be celebrated with both the cake and pink balloons, but we are waiting with that to Sunday when all her friends arrives, then we will have a full house of kids.

Music wise this weekend, oh thank you, there are lots of bands to see. If you are into some Laidback Jazzy style, why not take the boat to Gröna Lund and watch Bo Kaspers Orkester, or a mini festival in Sollentuna with Electric Boys and some others, or if you are into more popish stuff, why not visit the Indie Pop festival Popaganda at Eriksdalsbadet here in Stockholm that is going on for two days, I will be working there tomorrow, so more info about that on Sunday. We also have Dolly Parton on the Globe tomorrow. But last but not least, it's Saturday Wage Goes Pay Weekend(Lönelördag Goes Lönehelg), What We Do Is Secret & Fritz's Corner arrange a music event at the Strand, including Kurt Vile, Den Sista Viljan, Göst Berlings Saga and Bombus, unfortunately I will miss this, dastardly!

Today I intend to "kill two birds with one stone" and pick a nice song from What We Do Is Secret event at the Strand and Children liked fairy tales, so then Gösta Berlings Saga suits in perfectly:)

Gösta Berlings Saga was formed in 2004 by Alexander Skepp (Drums), David Lundberg (Fender Rhodes), Gabriel Hermansson (Bass) and Mathias Danielsson (Guitars).

The latest album, entitled “Glue Works” has more of a give and take approach to recording than their earlier works. Instrumentally much more captivating, with all kinds of unforgettable sounds the songs expands the bands musical universe even further. Compositionally the songs have become both more straight forward and more multifaceted when it’s called for.  Mattias Olsson was the producer and mix the whole album.

Todays tune "354" is taken from GBS latest record "Glue Works" It's a nice tune from this well-oiled quartet.

Tom Waits - Bad As Me

Thomas Alan "Tom" Waits is an American singer-songwriter, composer, and actor. Waits has visited Tune Of The Day on several occasions. In 2011, Waits was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Waits currently lives in Sonoma County, California with his wife, Kathleen Brennan, and three children.

"Bad as Me" is the upcoming seventeenth studio album, due to be released on October 25, 2011 by ANTI- Records. The album is known to have been recorded as early as February 2011 and was officially announced for release on August 23, 2011 on Waits' official web site and various social media networks. On the same day, the title track, "Bad as Me," was released as the album's first single on iTunes.

The album is also Waits' first album consisting completely of new material in seven years since Real Gone (2004). Waits' label, ANTI-, recently agreed on a distribution deal with Warner Music Group allowing them to release the album internationally. This marks Waits' first release through the Warner organisation since Heartattack and Vine (1980).

Following an annoucement by Waits on his official web site on August 16, 2011 stating that he "will set the record straight," the artwork, track listing, song length and an audio clip of "Bad as Me" were released on Amazon and musicME. According to Waits, in a YouTube video announcing the release of Bad as Me, the leak of information "spoiled the surprise" of his announcement as the single was "going to go out everywhere, into the blood stream." The previous June, Waits posted a picture of a chalkboard, with the lyrics to the song's chorus, on his official web site and social media pages. The song is also the eight track on Bad as Me, due to be released on October 25, 2011.

Todays tune "Bad as Me" is a song written collectively by Waits and his wife Kathleen Brennan. Written and recorded during the sessions for his upcoming studio album of the same name, the song was released as Waits' seventeenth single on August 23, 2011 and was the first new studio material by Waits in seven years, since Real Gone (2004) "Bad As Me" is a raw noisy, bluesy piece, but in a characteristic and typical way and obviously unhinged. The song swings and I like this, it will be incredibly exciting to hear the whole album.

The album is due to be released worldwide on October 25, 2011 in three formats: a digipak CD version with a 32-page booklet and free digital download in FLAC, AAC or MP3; a deluxe edition two-CD version with 40-page booklet and free digital download; and a 180 gram LP and CD with a lyric sheet and free digital download. A sole digital download of the album is also available for pre-order on iTunes
Pre-order at Tom Waits Store.
