Jerry Williams - Number One

Sunday, time for a classic!

Erik Sven Fernström (15 April 1942 – 25 March 2018), known professionally as Jerry Williams, was a Swedish singer and actor. He began his career as the lead singer of THE VIOLENTS, before launching a solo career.

Williams grew up in a working-class family in Solna. The family had a one-room apartment. Williams' mother, a nurse, died when he was only twelve years old. His father took care of him and his brother alone. He was very interested in sports, and as a youngster he played football, ice hockey and was engaged in cycle sport. He was also a member of Narva BK, a boxing club.

In his youth, Williams worked as a plumber. He did his mandatory military service in 1966.

In 1962, Williams joined THE VIOLENTS, a Swedish band that was formed in 1959 influenced by the English instrumental guitar group THE SHADOWS. The band had a number of line-up changes. But when Williams joined in 1962, he became frontman and the lead singer of the band. In 1962, Williams and THE VIOLENTS released a version of "Darling Nelly Grey" as a single, which became a major hit in Sweden.

When Little Richard performed at the Star-Club in Hamburg in 1962, both Williams along with THE VIOLENTS and THE BEATLES were opening acts. When THE BEATLES toured Sweden in 1963, Williams and THE VIOLENTS were the opening act. THE VIOLENTS folded in 1966.

In the 1960s, Williams recorded a track with English record producer Joe Meek. The track was called "The Wonder Of Your Love". It was never released and was found amongst Meek's tapes when he died. It can be heard on YouTube. Williams' music style was soul-influenced by the end of the 1960s, and the song "Keep On" became a hit in Sweden in 1969.

He returned to rock and roll-based music in the early 1970s and performed with the band Roadwork until the early 1980s. During the 1970s, he also toured with the band THE TELSTARS. In 1983, Williams made his debut as an actor in the film G – som i gemenskap. He also acted in the musical "Cats.

Today's tune "Number One" is taken from the "Jerry 21" with Jerry Williams & THE VIOLENTS released 1963.

Little Richard - Tutti Frutti

Sunday, time for a classic.

"A Wop Bop Alu Bop, A Wop Bam Boom!"

Is part of "Tutti Frutti", the most inspired rock lyric ever recorded. The song was written by Little Richard and Dorothy LaBostrie that was first recorded in 1955, becoming Little Richard's first major hit record. With its opening cry of "A-wop-bop-a-loo-bop-a-wop-bam-boom!" (a verbal rendition of a drum pattern that Little Richard had imagined) and its hard-driving sound and wild lyrics, it became not only a model for many future Little Richard songs but also a model for rock and roll itself. The song introduced several of rock music's most characteristic musical features, including its loud volume, powerful vocal style, and distinctive beat and rhythm.

In 2007, an eclectic panel of renowned recording artists ranked "Tutti Frutti" (Italian: "All fruits") at No. 1 on Mojo's "The Top 100 Records That Changed The World" and hailed the recording as "the sound of the birth of rock and roll".

Richard Wayne Penniman (December 5, 1932 – May 9, 2020), better known as Little Richard, was an American singer, songwriter, and musician. An influential figure in popular music and culture for seven decades, he was nicknamed "The Innovator", "The Originator", and "The Architect of Rock and Roll". Penniman's most celebrated work dates from the mid-1950s, when his charismatic showmanship and dynamic music, characterized by frenetic piano playing, pounding backbeat and raspy shouted vocals, laid the foundation for rock and roll. His innovative emotive vocalizations and uptempo rhythmic music also played a key role in the formation of other popular music genres, including soul and funk. He influenced numerous singers and musicians across musical genres from rock to hip hop; his music helped shape rhythm and blues for generations to come.

On May 9, 2020, Penniman died at the age of 87 in Tennessee. His death was from a cause related to a struggle with bone cancer. At the time of his death, he was living with his brother in Nashville, Tennessee. His brother and son were with him when he died. He has since received tributes from many artists, including Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, John Fogerty, Elton John, Lenny Kravitz, and many others who also drew primary influence from him as recording artists.

Thanks for the music Little Richard, R.I.P.

Motörhead - Electricity

Monday, time to introduce this weeks "Record Of The Week", this week we have the 22nd studio release "Bad Magic" from the British metal trio MOTÖRHEAD.

The band have been around for 40 years now, releasing albums, touring and still rock more than others that have been on this long which is an incredible achievement. What makes MOTÖRHEAD so vigorous is they have chosen to maintain their own formula of rock and roll as intact as possible through the years. "Bad Magic" is exactly what you think it would be, an kickass rock album with 13 typical MOTÖRHEAD tunes that will not make you disappointed.

"Bad Magic" is warm and rumbling record with classic dirty riffs signed Phil "Wizzö" Campbell, powerful drums playing by Mikkey Dee and Lemmy sings excellent which almost make it impossible to keep your feets in place. :)

Oh I think I said the same thing last time I did a review of MOTÖRHEAD and their album "Aftershock". Well It's MOTÖRHEAD, they still can deliver an interesting album with straight forward pure-blooded Rock 'N Roll, that you can feel it in your blood and in your bones. "Bad Magic" keeps a good standard with many excellent tunes.

That MOTÖRHEAD have some problems at the moment is clear, shows have been cancelled. Obviously the greatest concern here is for the man's health, he is not 20, so take care of your health man, we want you around for as long as possible. Look, Lemmy is a legend – 49% motherfucker, 51% son of a bitch!

The album was produced by Cameron Webb and features on the bold cover of THE ROLLING STONES "Sympathy For The Devil".

To sum this up with a short line: Timeless sound, You Need This! (If you dig this band, go out and buy it for gods sake)

Think energy

Think crackle

Think volume

Think snap

Think thick bass riding with crunching riffs

Think rich, loud, raw, ebullient ELECTRICITY, the first single from Motörhead’s forthcoming album Bad Magic, and a storming statement of intent to underscore that most righteous of phrases, if it’s too loud, you’re too old!
Electricity; two minutes and 17 seconds of pure, raw Motör power.

As Lemmy says,

"Freedom to believe don’t have a price
Innocence never gets too old
You need a bolt of rock
Severe toxic shock
Electricity deep in your soul”

The man, and the band, don’t lie…
…So get some “Electricity" and fast.

Todays tune "Electricity" is taken from "Bad Magic", a tune that contains a classic MOTÖRHEAD fashion!

Motörhead - Heartbreaker

New week and it's time to unwrap this weeks "Record Of The Week".

This weeks album "Aftershock" is the 21st studio album by British Rock band Motörhead. It was released on October 21, 2013. The album was produced by Cameron Webb, who had produced the previous four albums.

The band have been around for nearly 40 years now, releasing albums, touring and still rock more than others that have been on this long which is an incredible achievement. What makes Motörhead so vigorous is they have chosen to maintain their own formula of rock and roll as intact as possible through the years. Aftershock is exactly what you think it would be, an kickass rock album with 14 typical Motörhead tunes that will not make you disappointed.

Aftershock is warm and rumbling with classic dirty riffs signed Phil "Wizzö" Campbell, powerful drum playing by Mikkey Dee and Lemmy sings excellent which almost make it impossible to keep your feets in place. :) There are many stand out tracks on this album, even those who not stand out have a great standard, one favourite I got during the first listening was the slow blues tune "Lost Woman Blues". A tune that I surely will get back to soon here on Tune of The Day. To sum this up with a short line: You Need This!

Todays tune "Heartbreaker" is the first track of the album and contains a classic Motörhead fashion
