Arctic Monkeys - Do I Wanna Know?

For twelve years, the music and film festival Way Out West – that attracts visitors from all over Sweden and large parts of the rest of the world – has filled Gothenburg and Slottskogen with three days of music, festivities and culture. The programme includes the biggest stars in the world, the hottest new-comers, film premieres, challenging conversations, great vegetarian food and a robust club programme called ‘Stay Out West’ that takes place at night in central Gothenburg.

The ground concept remains the same; over three days we create a cultural melting-pot in central Gothenburg and establish the main area in beautiful Slottsskogen. We create the festival that we would like to visit ourselves, and one that we don’t think exists anywhere else in the world.

This is Way Out West!

This is my eleventh year on this festival and for some strange reason, I long for it. Much depends on the fact that it is the world's best colleagues, a bunch that is well welded that it goes like a dance, everyone know what to do and help eash other out and makes things easier for eash other to conquer it. Even if I, is not a big fan of Indie, Rap, Hip Hop, Dance or the most common artists that perform on this festival, not even am I a vegeterian, but once a year it works out just fine. And as I always do every year around the festival, I play some tunes from the artists that is going to perform and as long as we go I add some cool pictures and I even might tell a story, we will see about that. So for the next week, 10 days I will focus on WOW - 18. First out will be british bunch of Indie Rockers.

ARCTIC MONKEYS is a English indie rock band that is playing on Thursday at WOW.

Today's tune "Do I Wanna Know?" is a song recorded by ARCTIC MONKEYS for their fifth studio album "AM" (2013). The song was released as a single on 18 June 2013, together with an accompanying music video, and afterward became available for digital download via iTunes. A 7" vinyl edition of the single was released on 22 July 2013, with a B-side titled "2013".

The song was first played live on 22 May 2013 in Ventura, California, at the first concert of the ARCTIC MONKEYS' AM Tour. Throughout the tour, "Do I Wanna Know?" was being played as the opening number.

Musically, "Do I Wanna Know?" is an indie rock song with elements of psychedelic music and strong elements of stoner rock and blues rock. In terms of both lyrical content and aesthetic style, the song picks up from where the band's 2012 single "R U Mine?" left off. The guitar riffs are strikingly similar, but the song is more downtempo. The track continues the hard-edged, rocking sound of their previous album Suck It and See. In concert, singer and guitarist Alex Turner use a Vox 12-string electric guitar.

Structurally, the song follows a common pop music "verse-pre-chorus-chorus" form up until its second chorus; from that point on, it follows what Hit Songs Deconstructed calls "a more unorthodox flow" ending in a "pre-chorus/chorus hybrid section". Falsetto backing vocals form an interplay with those of Turner throughout the song. Moreover, the title encapsulates the entire premise of the story, the narrator wondering whether he wants to remain in doubt or know if his feelings are unrequited or mutual. "Do I Wanna Know?" is in the key of G minor.

The music video for the tune was directed by David Wilson with animation agency Blinkink, was first released onto YouTube on 18 June 2013. As of July 2018, it has been viewed over 690 million times. The video begins with a black background and simple visuals of white sound waves (similar to the AM cover art) that vibrate in synchronization, first with the percussion and lead guitar, then with the lead singer, Alex Turner. As the band enters with the chorus, colored sound waves illustrate new voices. Simple sound waves then give way to fast-moving, representational line-drawing animations that morph between a variety of female, race car, race car engine, and road racing images. At one point, the undulating white line becomes the "trucker's Mudflap girl", seen in the single's cover art. The line drawings are interrupted several times with flashes of full-color animation, several that recall the surrealistic style of Robert Crumb. The increasingly complex video creates, by turns, a somewhat jarring and psychedelic experience, in a style not unlike the Gary Gutierrez animations that were featured in The Grateful Dead Movie (1977). The video ends with the familiar white line becoming two crossed checkered flags, which join together in a single line with the "AM" initials. Enjoy!

Beware of Darkness - Are You Real?

Monday, New week and it's time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

BEWARE OF DARKNESS is a bold new power band with an old soul, pissed at life in the modern age. They are ready to frighten your children, sleep with your daughters, and make you shake, scream, and contort like it's a Depression-era, Southern exorcism.

To follow up the 2013 debut album "Orthodox" with it's explosive introduction of classic rock with ZEPPELIN-esqe guitar riffs and emotionally raw lyrics, at that time they got the stamp as the next big thing, now that the smoke has settled, they return with something decidedly newer and shinier.

They still play fast moving rock tunes with exploding key and rhythm changes mid-song. But "Are You Real?" have some more sexed-up pop approach. A bit far out, crazy and very melodic and groovy. The album is more to the broader mass of audience, I could say ARTIC MONKEYS, ROYAL BLOOD and even THE STRUTS.

Lets say if you take happy and popish BEATLES, stir it up with a drum machine and throw in the chaotic parts of DAVID BOWIE and THE DOORS flushed thru a coffee filter, stamped THE WHO, where the beans is delivered from T-REX but made by LED ZEPPELIN then you can imagine BEWARE OF DARKNESS "Are You Real?"

The album kicks of with the obvious single "Motherfucka", a far out, heavy piece of music where the riffs and rhythms will grab you by the balls until the album moves on with "Blood, Sex, Violence & Murder", a more modern Ghostbuster vibe. The 3:rd track is the slinky and swirly "Dope", until here you have gotten so many different way to present a tune that you start to wonder if this is still is the same band. Tunes like "Summerdaze" and "Sugar in the Raw" follows the same path, with the same approach as "Dope". "Surrender" is one of the more deeper cuts on the album with it's more straight forward rock touch with fat choruses.  The title track starts with a doomish "CANDLEMASS" riff until ARTIC MONKEYS knocks on the door. "Beware" and "Delirium" are the albums more slower parts, here the band gears down, step back and keeps in the craziness.

Summary: A rambunctious rocker with a psychedelic pop attitude, powerful hooks and groovy sound will appeal to any wide open ear music lover.

Today's tune "Muthafucka", taken from the new album "Are You Real?", Enjoy!

Iggy Pop - Gardenia

"Post Pop Depression" is the seventeenth studio album by Iggy Pop, released on March 18, 2016, by Loma Vista Recordings. Produced by Josh Homme of QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE, the album was recorded in secrecy and features contributions from QUEENS OF THE STONE AGEs Dean Fertita and ARCTIC MONKEYS drummer Matt Helders

Pop and Homme began working on the album in January 2015. Pop reached out to Homme by text message to ask if he was interested in writing music together. After they spoke by phone, Pop sent Homme some lyrics by mail, along with notes about Pop's time working with David Bowie. Three months later, Homme sent lyrics to Pop, and they agreed to work together on recording songs in a studio. They brought incomplete ideas as opposed to finished songs, so that they could work on them together. Pop described the album as discussing issues of what happens when your utility is at an end, and dealing with your legacy.

Consisting of nine songs, the album was recorded between January 12 and March 9, 2015 at Rancho De La Luna in Joshua Tree, California, over the course of two weeks, and another week at Pink Duck Studios in Burbank, California. Pop and Homme self-financed the album. Dean Fertita recorded guitar and keyboards, while Matt Helders recorded drum tracks. Homme stated that preparing Post Pop Depression was one thing that helped him cope with the aftermath of the November 2015 attack at the Bataclan.

The album was released on March 18, 2016, and Pop and Homme will embark on a short tour to support the album after its release (including two shows in Paris, France on May 15, 2016 at the Grand Rex and on August 26, 2016 at the "Rock en Seine" festival) In addition to Pop and Homme, the tour will include Fertita, Helders, Matt Sweeney playing bass guitar and Troy Van Leeuwen playing guitar.

Today's tune "Gardenia" is a song by American musician Iggy Pop. It was released as the lead single from his seventeenth studio album, "Post Pop Depression", on January 22, 2016. The song was premiered live on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on the day of the song's release.

Radkey - Romance Dawn

RADKEY is an American garage punk band.

The band consists of three home-schooled brothers from St. Joseph, Missouri, all grew up in a shitty little pink house. Bored with nothing to do but listen to their Father's records so they started a band.

RADKEY consist of Isaiah Radke (bass), Solomon Radke (drums), and Dee Radke (lead vocals and guitar), formed their family-titled band in 2010, and played their first show in 2011 when they opened for FISHBONE. With their dad, Matt Radke, as their manager, they have since played with the likes of THE OFFSPRING, LOCAL H, Black Joe Lewis, Titus Andronicus and performed at festivals like SXSW, Riot Fest, Afropunk, the U.K.’s Download Festival and Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

They have released two EPs since their inception: 2012’s Cat & Mouse with Adrian Grenier’s Wreckroom Records and 2013’s Devil Fruit on Little Man Records. The band worked with Ross Orton (ARCTIC MONKEYS, DRENGE) to release their latest single, "Feed My Brain" and the team released their debut LP "Dark Black Makeup" in August 2015

Today's tune "Romance Dawn" is taken from the bands debut album "Dark Black Makeup"

Arctic Monkeys - R U Mine?

"R U Mine?" is a song by the English indie rock band ARCTIC MONKEYS. The song was released as a digital download in the United Kingdom on 27 February 2012 and was released physically for the Record Store Day on 21 April 2012 on a limited edition double A-side purple 7" vinyl along with new song "Electricity". The vinyl was limited to a run of only 1750 copies.

"R U Mine?" debuted at number twenty-three on the UK Singles Chart; the band's highest charting single since "Crying Lightning" reached number twelve in July 2009. Despite originally being released as a standalone single, the song was later included on their fifth studio album, AM, in a slightly different version.

The song was also featured in the video games Forza Horizon and Rocksmith 2014. It was released as a downloadable song for the rhythm game Rock Band 3 on January 13, 2015; one of the first three downloadable songs released for Rock Band 3 in almost two years.

Alex Turner said that the band drew inspiration from Drake and Lil Wayne, saying "There's a few references for people to pick up on in there – 'Some Velvet Morning', Tracy Island. Those references are just me being a smartarse...That particular bit is like the thing Lil Wayne and Drake do. We've been listening to a lot of their stuff recently. I like that thing they do where they talk about something backwards, so they talk about it but then say what it actually is on the next line. It's hard to explain but I guess it's a little nod to that idea. So I say, 'I'm a puppet on a string', just before mentioning Tracy Island. That's what it's about – uncertainty."

ARCTIC MONKEYS formed in 2002 in High Green, a suburb of Sheffield. The band consists of Alex Turner (lead vocals, rhythm guitar, lead guitar), Jamie Cook (lead guitar, rhythm guitar), Nick O'Malley (bass, backing vocals), and Matt Helders (drums, backing vocals). Former band member Andy Nicholson (bass guitar, backing vocals) left the band in 2006 shortly after its debut album was released.

They have released five studio albums: Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not (2006), Favourite Worst Nightmare (2007), Humbug (2009), Suck It and See (2011) and AM (2013), as well as one live album, At the Apollo (2008). Their debut album is the fastest-selling debut album by a band in British chart history, and in 2013, Rolling Stone ranked it the 30th greatest debut album of all time.

The band have won seven Brit Awards—winning both Best British Group and Best British Album three times, and have been nominated for three Grammy Awards. They also won the Mercury Prize in 2006 for their debut album, in addition to receiving nominations in 2007 and 2013. The band have headlined at the Glastonbury Festival twice, in 2007 and again in 2013.

ARCTIC MONKEYS were heralded as one of the first bands to come to public attention via the Internet (through fan-based sites rather than from the band), with commentators suggesting they represented the possibility of a change in the way in which new bands are promoted and marketed.

Today's tune "R U Mine?" is taken from ARCTIC MONKEYS fifth studio album, "AM". This is the official video!

Sufjan Stevens - Futile Devices

Sufjan Stevens is an American singer-songwriter and musician born in Detroit, Michigan. Stevens first began releasing his music on Asthmatic Kitty, a label co-founded with his stepfather, beginning with the 1999 release, A Sun Came. He is best known for his 2005 album, Illinois, which hit number one in the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart, and for the song "Chicago”.

Stevens has released albums of varying styles, from the electronica of Enjoy Your Rabbit and the lo-fi folk of Seven Swans to the symphonic instrumentation of Illinois and Christmas-themed Songs for Christmas. Stevens makes use of a variety of instruments, often playing many of them himself on the same recording, and writes music in various time signatures. He is considered part of the folk revival in indie pop, but his influences are very broad. His music has been likened to electronica and aesthetically compared to the minimalism of Steve Reich. Stevens' music originally contained spiritual elements; many songs (most notably on Seven Swans) draw their inspiration from Bible stories and themes. Recently, he has made a notable shift away from religious elements once present in his music, and has made several songs that distance himself considerably from the Christian religion, as present on 2010 albums All Delighted People EP and The Age of Adz.

The latest album "The Age of Adz” was released on October 12, 2010 by Asthmatic Kitty Records. It is Stevens' first song-based full length album in five years, since the release of Illinois in 2005. The album features a heavy use of electronics augmented by heavy orchestration, and takes inspiration from the apocalyptic artwork of schizophrenic artist Royal Robertson

In interviews, Stevens has stated that in 2009–2010 he suffered from a mysterious debilitating viral infection that affected his nervous system. He experienced chronic pain, and was forced to stop working on music for several months. He said: "The Age of Adz, is, in some ways, a result of that process of working through health issues and getting much more in touch with my physical self. That's why I think the record's really obsessed with sensation and has a hysterical melodrama to it.”

Sufjan Stevens is out on tour atm and did a visit to the Circus, Stockholm, Sweden yesterday. I must say, A really big production for such a small place as Circus, lots of gadgets and effects did they bring on at this trip. A big band crew with double drummers and a few dancers. The show was very electronic and did a high-impact, very entertainment. Part of the show was very psychedelic with UV light glowing in the dark moving to the beats and used projections of the artist Royal Robertson's (1936-1997) works, very nice effect.

That this is a real ”Stevens” week is actually pretty fun. Sufjan Stevens yesterday, Roger Stevens today and tomorrow, he is doing a double gig at the Globe, on the same day does Arctic Stevens a gig at Circus, on Friday do The Queen of the Stevens plays at Circus and Rush Stevens at Globe and finally Cat Stevens on Saturday.
