These Grey Men - Street Spirit

Thursday, time for a cover.

SYSTEM OF A DOWN drummer John Dolmayan has released his first-ever solo album, "These Grey Men". Ostensibly, on the surface it’s a covers album, but, as John told Loudersound, it’s more of a collection of songs that have been reimagined and reworked by the stickman.

“I wanted people to think “Oh, John just came out with a new bunch of songs,” he says. “But, no it’s a cover. That’s what I wanted.”

The record was inspired both by John’s craving for more artistic output and by the long drives he takes whilst listening to the radio.

“It had been a good decade since I recorded something with SYSTEM OF A DOWN. I had done the SCARS ON BROADWAY album, but it was not enough artistic output to keep me interested and satisfied” he sighs.

“It’s hard not being a songwriter, but I always enjoyed covers, I was doing these three-hour drives from my family to LA, and I’m listening to all these songs and thinking ‘how would I play that song?’ There was a cartoon that I used to watch when I was young, and it was about this kid used to just daydream, and the whole show would be his daydreams come to life. I guess I’m kind of like that kid, so I would daydream about what I’d do if I was in that band was listening to.”

From that initial idea, the seeds of the record started to grow, and John roped in everyone from bandmate Serj Tankian to the likes of RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE guitar-god Tom Morello and AVENGED SEVENFOLD frontman Matt Shadows to get involved with helping reimagine a genuinely eclectic set of songs.

“I started thinking who would be a good vocalist for each song,” he smiles. “This guy would be good for that song and this for this song, and I have a lot of friends in the industry as I’ve been touring for so long. So, we got, not everyone we wanted, but we got a real good amount of musicians that added so much to these songs. I love doing covers, I might do more, I wouldn’t rule out another album, I had so much fun doing it.”

The record covers many interesting pieces of music and some cool guests behind the vocals and instruments, to name a few tunes like "Road To Nowhere" by TALKING HEADS featuring Serj Tankian, "Runaway" by Del Shannon featuring Franky Perez, "Hung Up" by Madonna featuring Sirusho, "Rock Bottom" by EMINEM, "What I Know" by TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB featuring Jonathan Dorr to David Bowie's "Starman", featuring Serj Tankian.

Today's tune "Street Spirit" (Originally by RADIOHEAD) The Bends is a record; you have to listen to the whole thing. Taking a song as iconic as this, it’s not daunting for me, I don’t think I those terms. If I did, I never would have got anywhere, I’d be too scared to be in a rock band. So, I’m not scared to come to something as big as this song and put my own personal spin on it, like, I always loved the song in its original form, but wished the drums came in earlier.

"I would listen to it and think ‘what would John Bonham do with it?’ That’s what I do a lot ‘How would I play it?’ You listen to systems ballads and I try and do something different to set us apart. Tom Morello came in and knocked it out of the park, of course he did, everything he does is exceptional, everyone knows that.

"As did M Shadows, we’ve become really good friends, he’s not aloof he’s really down to earth. Some singers have quite an ego and Matt doesn’t. He was up for it straight away, as soon as I put it to him he was there.”

Enjoy today's tune.

Transport League - Twist & Shout at the Devil

Monday, new week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

"Twist & Shout at the Devil" is the latest and seventh album from the Swedish boogie rockers TRANSPORT LEAGUE.

The band, which was formed in 1994 and with now with the seventh release "Twist & Shout at the Devil" they have created an album that shows that the band has grown, a bit beardy and grey haired than usual 😏

The songs feels very elaborate and well-crafted. The album is like an riffy roadtrip with an heavy impact! It got some strong influences from DANZIG and CLUTCH. Like the two predecessors, "Twist & Shout at the Devil" is a collection of tunes with high peaks and less compelling transportation stretches in between. The three longstanding band members Tony Jelencovich, Peter Hunyadi (guitar) and Mattias Starander (drums) recorded the album together with the new bassist Dennis Österdal who has joined the fold to replace Lars HĂ€glund, the latter having had to leave the group due to health problems.

"Twist & Shout at the Devil" with the ambiguous album title which hints at both the BEATLES ("Twist And Shout") and MÖTLEY CRÜE ("Shout At The Devil"). The album opener "Destroy Rock City", with its KISS references ("Detroit Rock City") in terms of its name and its startup riff until it forms to their own creation. There is another tune where the reference is made, "Bad Voltage" which brings to mind LED ZEPPELIN and AC/DC, Marshall amps and Gibson guitars – all of them synonymous with timeless rock´n`roll. The heavy punching "Power To The Sloth", screaming vocals and cool and heavy riffs. "Cannibal Holobeast" is a really cool piece where he screams "This is my sabotage", the tune is also supported by a video clip. "Swine To Shine" is a more lade-back tune, I get a little FOO FIGHTERS feeling in the vocal part until he burst out something else, cool tune. "One Last Way", heavy melodic riffing with almost rapping vocals and screaming angry parts in a very melodic way, could have been a tune from SYSTEM OF A DOWN, I really like this one. "Zulu Zombie Zodiac" is a fast tune, a modern groovy monster to the stand out tune "Dead And Awaken", were spoken word is the main thing along with ruffy and screamo vocals takes it's part along with heavy riffs and marching drums. "Werewolves In The Sink" is a killing duet with Jocke Berg from HARDCORE SUPERSTAR. "Thousand Eyes & One" is a heavy piece where modern FOO FIGHTERS flickers in the chorus, great tune indeed! "Gravestation" flirts with ZAPPA and WHITE ZOMBIE. The album ends with "Winter War", a riffy and ruffy tune and I see myself click on the repeat button. I guess I need to add a Vinyl for order soon!

Roberto Laghi(IN FLAMES, SONIC SYNDICATE, MUSTASCH) is behind the mix of the album. The impressive cover artwork was designed by Axel WidĂ©n and presents creatures (werewolf, pig, sloth) from the album’s lyrics – a real eye-catcher which pleasantly sets itself apart from the usual metal standards.

Sum: Hell yeah, you need this!

Today's tune "Cannibal Holobeast" is taken from the "Record Of The Week", enjoy! Lyrics by Tony Jelencovich. Video directed by Joel Nilsson at Maluha Media

Crucified Barbara - To Kill A Man

Crucified Barbara is back with a new album "In The Red", release date tomorrow September 10, 2014. Two single and one video is released from the new album "In The Red".

Formed in Stockholm in 1998 by bassist Ida Evileye and guitarist Klara Force, Crucified Barbara is Sweden's hardest rocking quartet, playing a fiery brand of rock 'n' roll tinged with metal and lashings of punk, pop, thrash, and whatever else dares to cross their path.

No strangers to hard work or success,
Crucified Barbara’s debut single from their 2005 debut In Distortion We Trust climbed to #8 on the Swedish pop charts. They played Australia, toured across Europe opening for Motörhead, Sepultura, In Flames, and Doro, and earned a prestigious slot alongside Black Sabbath, Velvet Revolver, and System Of A Down at the U.K. Download Festival. With all that touring, it would be four years before the band got around to recording their second album, 2009’s ‘Til Death Do Us Party. Next thing you know, there they were on national television performing in Eurovision’s 2010 Song Contest and made it to the semi-finals. Go figure.

Entering the legendary Music-A-Matic Vintage Recording Studio in Gothenberg with sound engineer Henryk Lipp and producer Chips Kiesby to create Crucified Barbara’s third studio release, The Midnight Chase features the beautifully evil “Rock Me Like The Devil,” the anthemic “Everything We Need,” and the commandeering “Into The Fire.” Ida Evileye dominates her trusty Sandberg bass, Klara Force rocks steady on her ’76 Gibson Explorer, Mia Coldheart belts out her unapologetic vocals while riffing all over her Gibson Gothic Flying V, and Nicki Wicked pounds on her glittered Yamaha Maple drum kit until you’re splayed across the floor with a bull’s-eye knock-out punch that’ll make you spit your teeth out. Now you know what happens when Motörhead mates with The Runaways.

So how did they get their name? The band members attended Denmark’s legendary Roskilde Festival and came across something very unexpected in a nearby forest: a blow-up doll (generically called “Barbara” throughout Sweden) attached to a crucifix. And no, they didn’t identify with the victim, they claimed the power of the aggressor right on the spot and have never looked back.

"In The Red" is the most polished album so far, it's a heavier than previous records. From the first kick ass punkish track "I Sell My Kids For Rock N’ Roll", to the second track and first single (todays tune) "To Kill A Man" with the slower bass chewing melody to the third track and second single "Electric Sky" the more dance alike tune that could easily climb on the charts, the forth tune, "The Ghost Inside" with the lovely guitar intro that get you goosebumps, the title track "In The Red" is a real ass kicking tune with heavy guitar riffing and pouching drums. Another up tempo track is "Shadows" that wake up your sleepy legs for some tap dance. The last and closing track on the album is "Follow The Stream" is a real rocker that signs up the album that these girls have successed to make a excellent record that will get many hours of guaranteed enjoyness!

Tomorrow, if you live in Stockholm, don't miss the signing session at Sound Pollution at 17:30.

Todays tune is the the anti-rape anthem “To Kill a Man”, the first single release from "In The Red".

System Of A Down - B.Y.O.B.

Hi everyone!

Home again after a long summer of festivals and thingies.
Last festival Getaway, was a nice festival with lotsa band that i really like.
As usual i couldn't see that much as I wanted to, but 2 of the bands I saw the whole show, as I was doing some spotlighting on em.

Deep Purple and System Of A Down.

Purple was lovely as usual.  System I never saw b4 ..
Gosh they were so tight in their playing....every cord just so much planned.
The singer cutted his hair so he looked like Borat, haha anyway he sings really weird and cool.

Their light show was extraordinary! It sorta lift the show up so damn much if is perfect.

The tune Im going to play for u is one of their most known and best tunes in my universe.
This comes from their album Mezmerize (2005) it should be nice to hear a new album soon.

Serj Tankian - Occupied Tears

The Record of the week has almost been forgotten, when the job has taken over and lots of trips made that Tune Of The Day has suffered, today we will overcome this by introducing this week's album.

This week we present Serj Tankian, [ˈsɛɟʒ tʰɑnˈkʰjɑn]; born August 21, 1967) is a Lebanese-born Armenian-American singer-songwriter, composer, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, poet, and political activist. He is best known as the lead vocalist, songwriter, keyboardist, and occasional live rhythm guitarist of the rock band System of a Down.

During his musical career, Tankian has released five albums with System of a Down, one with Arto Tunçboyacıyan (Serart), as well as three solo albums Elect the Dead, Imperfect Harmonies and Harakiri. A live orchestral version of Elect the Dead incorporating the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra named Elect the Dead Symphony was released. In 2002, Tankian and Rage Against the Machine/Audioslave guitarist Tom Morello co-founded a non-profit political activist organization, Axis of Justice. Tankian also founded the music label Serjical Strike Records.

Serj Tankian latest release Harakiri, is the third studio album. The album was released on July 10, 2012, as a follow-up to his symphonic rock album Imperfect Harmonies, released in 2010. The album also constitutes the first of four new albums set to be released in the near future, the other three being Orca, Jazz-Iz-Christ, and Fuktronic. A very productive one indeed.

Many would agree that System of a Down front man Serj Tankian is one of the more prolific and interesting artists that exist today. One could almost believe that he is the current generation version of Frank Zappa?

Have always thought that this man has been very interesting to listen to, especially when he is stepping all over and likes to surprise the listener, i like that. The third solo album is probably the best he has been a part of. He does what he wants and if you like it then that’s good, but he doesn’t strike me as the type of person that would worry too much about making music to please the masses.

The material that are being provided on this occasion is of course very sprawling, just as one expected of a man such as this. One moment it's hard others are quiet and melodic, a touch here and there of world music and even some dirty punk rock tones are heard. The electronics are not as clear as previous solo records, that i see only as positive. The lyrics are brilliant and political charged. In anticipation of a new System Of A Down album, then this is a good substitute.

All songs written, performed, and produced by Serj Tankian.

Dan Monti - guitar, audio mixing, audio engineering
Mario Pagliarulo - bass guitar
Troy Zeigler - drums
Vlado Meller - mastering

Todays tune "Occupied Tears" is taken from the new album "Harakiri".

Tankian is ranked 26th in the Hit Parader's Top 100 Metal Vocalists of All Time. On August 12, 2011, Tankian was awarded the Armenian Prime Minister's Medal for his contributions to the recognition of the Armenian Genocide and the advancement of music.

System Of A Down - Chop Suey!

Next band I picking is This... Wonderful cool band full of energy!

One could hear the sound long away from the Black Stage were they performed.
The crowd went totally crazy when they went up stage,
it was a pleasure to hear it.

The band was formed in 1994. It consists of Serj Tankian (lead vocals, keyboards, rhythm guitar), Daron Malakian (guitar, vocals), Shavo Odadjian (bass, background vocals) and John Dolmayan (drums). All four members are of Armenian descent, and are widely known for their outspoken views expressed in many of their songs confronting the Armenian Genocide of 1915 as well as the ongoing War on Terrorism.

In 2005, System of a Down planned something so unique and crazy as releasing two albums during that year, six months apart.
They released Mezmerize, where they again collaborated with Rick Rubin as producer. The album sold 10 million copies worldwide
over. Six months later, Hypnotize was released who became an equally big success.

At the absolute peak of their career, with two topped album in the U.S. sales charts in the same year and millions of albums sold worldwide, System of a Down decided to take a longer break. A pause that lasts until 2011, when they will do some gigs around the world. Metaltown becomes their only gig in Scandinavia!
We are very proud to have them with us at our festival and the audince loved them as well as me :D
