Queensrÿche - Eye9

QUEENSRŸCHE the American heavy metal band is out touring atm, today they are visiting Sweden and performing at Klubben here in Stockholm, I wish that I had the time to see the show, but to busy with other things so only a tune, well that's better than nothing!

Today's tune "Eye9" is taken from the fifteenth studio album "Condition Hüman". It was released on October 2, 2015 through Century Media. It is the second studio album recorded with vocalist Todd La Torre, after Geoff Tate was fired from the band and gave up the rights to the name after a two-year lawsuit regarding the rights to the QUEENSRŸCHE brand was amicably settled. The tune is written by Eddie Jackson also known as EdBass and One Take, the bass player and the co-founder QUEENSRŸCHE in 1982.

Queensrÿche - Guardian

For about two years ago we got 2 releases with QUEENSRŸCHE, one with the original singer Geoff Tate, who was fired from the band and lost the rights to the name after a two-year lawsuit about who would get the rights to the QUEENSRŸCHE brand was amicably settled. The other one was with the original band but with the new vocalist Todd La Torre. The albums "Frequency Unknown" and eponymous "Queensrÿche" that got released almost at the same time around June 2013.

"Frequency Unknown" vs eponymous "Queensrÿche". Who won last times fight over the band name QUEENSRŸCHE, well the one with Geoff Tate ("Frequency Unknown") was like an heavy anchor that have turned sour for some time. But the other one, the eponymous "Queensrÿche" with the new singer was pretty ok, Todd La Torre sounds more Geoff Tate than Geoff Tate himself.

Now again we have these two against each other. This time it's the "Key" (September 18) vs "Condition Hüman" (October 2)!

A taste from the "Key" you got served yesterday, some thoughts? Today it's fresh taste from "Condition Hüman" is the upcoming fifteenth studio album by American progressive heavy metal band Queensrÿche, due to be released on October 2, 2015 through Century Media. It is also the second studio album recorded with vocalist Todd La Torre.

Todays tune "Guardian", taken from the upcoming album "Condition Hüman", what do u think, listen, judge and comment.

Operation: Mindcrime - Burn

OPERATION: MINDCRIME is a progressive metal band that is fronted by the former lead singer of QUEENSRŸCHE, Geoff Tate, and features members such as John Moyer (also known for being in DISTURBED) and Simon Wright (also known for his work with AC/DC and Ronnie James Dio). The group signed a worldwide deal in December 2014 with Frontiers Music Srl for its coming releases. Their debut album, The Key, which is part one of a trilogy, will be released on September 18, 2015.

Tate was fired from QUEENSRŸCHE in 2012, as his relationship with the rest of the band had deteriorated. The acrimonious split caused a considerable amount of discord among fans and major lawsuits began. Tate filed suit for wrongful termination while the band counter-sued citing what it alleged as violent behavior by Tate. With an ongoing court case over the rights to use the name 'QUEENSRŸCHE' going on, Tate announced his own line-up under the name, leading to two bands using the name while actively touring at the same time. Tate's group released the album Frequency Unknown, produced and mixed by Jason Slater, on April 23, 2013 in the U.S. Although selling well, the release picked up mixed reviews from music critics and somewhat of a fan backlash.

Following a settlement, Tate was granted the exclusive performance rights to the band's concept albums Operation: Mindcrime (1988), and Operation: Mindcrime II (2006). Those two releases garnered both critical praise and widespread commercial success for the group, with Tate then serving as its frontman. In return, musicians Michael Wilton, Scott Rockenfield, Todd La Torre, and Eddie Jackson retained all rights to the 'QUEENSRŸCHE' brand.

Tate was allowed, according to the settlement, to perform with his own line-up under the name QUEENSRŸCHE until his tour concluded on August 31, 2014, after which his group announced to adopt the official name OPERATION: MINDCRIME. The La Torre-fronted QUEENSRŸCHE has retained the right to perform material coming from and related to the two Operation: Mindcrime albums live. The legal set-up is somewhat similar to that of Roger Waters' relationship to his former group Pink Floyd, in which both artists have performed songs from The Wall live.

About the group, Tate has said, "It is so refreshing to be able to concentrate on the many stories and ideas that I have been working on with no boundaries or restrictions." He's also remarked, "I think fans will continue to enjoy the music we create and perform together and hope they share this new musical journey with us."

In late 2014, Tate began working on a new concept album. Planned as a trilogy of albums, he has claimed it as one of his most ambitious works to date. The band signed a worldwide deal with Frontiers Music Srl for its coming releases in December 2014.

In 2015, John Moyer (DISTURBED, ADRENALINE MOB), Brian Tichy (BILLY IDOL, OZZY OSBOURNE), and Scott Moughton (CANDLEBOX) became full time members after the departures of Rudy Sarzo and Robert Sarzo.

Their debut album and first of the trilogy, The Key, will be released on September 18, 2015. The album will feature a guest appearance from MEGADETH bassist David Ellefson

Queensrÿche - Ad Lucem

Ad Lucem is a 11-minute mini-movie with Todd La Torre’s version of Queensrÿche.

The storyline was inspired by the four song from the band’s self-titled album – their first without sacked founder Geoff Tate – which feature in the soundtrack.

La Torre explains: The overall theme of the song Spore is one that deals with personal demons, relationship struggles, career pressures, personal/professional morals and ethical dilemmas. These are issues we all face on some level and the video touches upon them all.

“Midnight Lullaby and A World Without deal with the loss of a mother during childbirth, leaving the father as a single parent, struggling to move forward through the turmoil. X2, though it opens up our album, provides for a nice outro to it all.

“The end result is a roller coaster of emotion in an effort to find a healthy resolve. We feel this conceptual video will really resonate with our fans.”

Queensryche split into two after an interim court ruling following Tate’s dismissal in 2012. His band released Frequency Unknown in April, ahead of the La Torre lineup’s record two months later. Both outfits are free to use the name until a final ruling, due in January, at which point one party will be granted the rights and the other will be bought out of theirs.

"Queensrÿche" marks the debut release from the lineup comprised of Todd La Torre (vocals; ex-Crimson Glory), Michael Wilton (guitar), Parker Lundgren (guitar), Eddie Jackson (bass) and Scott Rockenfield (drums). The drums for the album were recorded at London Bridge Studios in Seattle, Washington with producer James "Jimbo" Barton — the man who engineered and mixed the band's classic 1988 LP, "Operation: Mindcrime", and its 1990 follow-up, "Empire", and co-produced 1994's "Promised Land". The rest of the music and vocals were laid down at several different facilities on the West Coast. The cover artwork was created by Craig Howell, who has previously worked on designs for "Star Wars", Slipknot and "American Idol", to name a few.

Queensrÿche is:

Todd La Torre (vocals)
Michael Wilton (guitars)
Parker Lundgren (guitars)
Eddie Jackson (bass)
Scott Rockenfield (drums, percussion, keys)

Mastodon - Iron Tusk

Imagine that you are stranded on a deserted island.
On it, there is this lounge with a great stereo, a comfortable couch, all placed in the shade.
With trembling hands you try the stereo, and as in a miracle - it actually works!
The only catch is - all you can find is a box with three records in it.
You have no way of getting more, and these three records will be you company until you die of starvation in a few weeks time. As a grant from higher/lower powers, you get to choose the three records.
Wich.
Records.
Do.
You.
Choose?

That eternal "desert island"-question is part of todays ramblings.
The other part is the fact that I would answer that question completely different depending on the time in my life - simply because I have a knack for falling completely and totally in love with new great records. Often, a bit more so than what is probably healthy.
This, I belive, is something I share with others - and I think that both Stones (perhaps especially him, maybe that is why his pile of records that he has bought and just do not seem to get around to just keeps growing?) and Thetania has a bit of that personality as well.
In the first Rebel Angel Rambling, I revealed that my top 5 favourite albums of all time are:
BLACK SABBATH "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath"
DIO "The Last In Line"
QUEENSRYCHE "Operation: Mindcrime"
PARADISE LOST "Draconian Times"
OPETH "Ghost Reveries"
...and they dominate my "Most Played" on iTunes - but, nevertheless, I would probably just grab one of them if I got the question from the beginning of this post.
Instead, I would add some of my own favourites at the moment.
This year, 2013, is turning out to be a solid music year.
I fell completely and a bit surprisingly in love with SOILWORK "The Living Infinite" earlier this year (did not think they would be able to pull it off, making a double album that has no dead moments at all), as well as a bit less surprisingly with the third and excellent KONGH-album "Sole Creation".
The third album that obsessed me - and the one that is currently taking all the airtime from me - is this one:

Vancouverbased ANCIIENTS plays music that rings familiar if you like acts like BARONESS, MASTODON, OPETH and KYLESA - but it is very much an album that stands on it's own and cannot be called a copy. It has that special magic touch that makes you want to listen again and again...and again. In fact, I've missed a few deadlines when it comes to reviews of other albums just beacause I could not face listening to anything else than "Heart Of Oak" from ANCIIENTS....but don't tell anyone.
After all, as Homer Simpson said: "Remember son, it's only cheating if you get caught", and as those deadlines were not written in blood I think it is fine. Some records just had to wait a week or two to get their albumreview published.

Looking back over the years, it is quite easy to pinpoint a specific album to a specific point of time in my life, especially when something important or memorable happened.
On the Metalblog, the spring has had a specific series of article that takes a deeper look into that (you'll find it here, it's called "Besatt" (meaning "Possessed") and it is all in Swedish), and as I am currently writing the fall season of that series - a new post will be published every other Sunday - I cannot help wondering if I will ascosiate ANCIIENTS with this late summer, and perhaps the Rebel Angel Ramblings.
Quite possible.
Especially as I am at a happy place in my life right now.
Everything...flows.
That makes it especially weird, as I once discovered MASTODON "Leviathan", an album that reminds me very much of ANCIIENTS "Heart Of Oak", at a very dark time in my life.

The record was released more or less at the same time as I went through a quite dirty divorce, and as it turned out it became a big comfort and energy booster when I needed it the most.
The heavy and catchy riffing, the energy and drive in the music and the out-of-this-world-drumming will forever fill me with thoughts and feelings of hope, slightly tainted with a small bit of sorrow and dark memories.
As I could not find any good video from ANCIIENTS, I thought that it would be fitting to play MASTODON, once a definite record that would have been one of the three in my box.

The band is Troy Sanders (bass and vocals), Brett Hinds (guitar and vocals), Bill Keliher (guitar) and Brann Dailor (drums), and I'd like to say that this record was their big brake and transformed them from a promising band to superstars. They went on to create concept albums like "Blood Mountain", "Crack The Skye" with windling stories built into them, as well as the latest and more straight forward "The Hunter".
It has become one of my most-played bands, it it will be interesting to see if ANCIIENTS can walk that very same road.

So - my three records right now, on that deserted island:
ANCIIENTS "Heart Of Oak"
BLACK SABBATH "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath"
SOILWORK "The Living Infinite".

Tomorrow, it may very well be something completely different.
Wich ones are your three albums for the island?

Dio - We Rock

Greetings, and welcome to a special article here on Tune Of The Day.
It is the first in a short series that is not written by Stones or Thetania.
It is the first one written by Chief Rebel Angel.
I usually ramble on a lot at my own blog Metal!, but some time ago an opportunity opened up.
The opportunity to give the guys at Tune Of The Day a bit of vacation, and just do a take over for some days.
After thinking long and hard (read: having a beer and listening to some great music, if I recall correctly it was the exceptional NECROPHOBIC album "Hrimthursum" that abused my stereo at the time) it was a done deal.
After all, Tune Of The Day is one of the best music blogs out there, and I am extremely impressed by the fact that the guys have been able to keep it up for such a long time, as well as constantly finding new and interesting music. Being able to let Stones and Thetania have some well-deserved time off is something I gladly contribute to.

So.
Immediately after accepting, I started thinking (read: having a beer and a brain melt down) on the fact that this is a legacy and a task not to be taken lightly.
How do one proceed with such a job?
Keeping to the concept, with a new song every day, a lot of information regarding the artists and bands as well as trying to time the article to some event with that video?
No. Of course, there will be videos, but instead I decided to do it another way.
My Way, as Frankie-boy would have said.

The Rebel Angel Ramblings will focus on story telling, and the music videos will be connected to these stories and, well, hmm... ramblings.
So, after a long planning (read: having yet another a beer and fiddling around with the notes function in my iPhone) I decided that best way to kick off such a thing is to tell a story of Stones (well, and Thetania as well, obviously).
Presentation of the Rebel Angel will be done another day (if you are curious, if not), and instead I will tell you how we came to meet In Real Life.

It all began one sunny day in august, when the eather in my town Tyresö was some 500 degrees Fahrenheit and all the girls was wearing short skirts.... no. Actually, I can't really remember when it all began, but in some weird way it was Stones and Thetania who found me.
Or, rather, they found my blog. Metal!.
They started commenting, and since my blog is quite a small one, there were more or less the only ones who did. I'd been a reader of Tune Of The Day for just a short time, and when they started commenting I saw my chances: they were going to be part of a series of interviews called "Blog In Focus".
The article was published on Metal! in March 2010 (it's all in swedish, so if you are nurishing thoughts about reading it, learn the language of heroes or use Google Translate!), but the best thing was actually the contacts in between the questioning and the publishing.
The world is a small place, and it turned out that:
a) the Tune Of The Day-characters lives in Tyresö. So do I. What are the odds?!
b) they are "northerners" in exile. As am I.

To good to be true, of course, and it did not take long for us to start talking and actually meet.
And we met again, as the first one was quite nice.
Before long, I recruited Stones to Werock.se, as well as to the small community that meets every january to play heavy metal and drink beer.
Sometime during that period, the guys came to one of my birthdays.
Had some coffee, cake and a laugh, and they gave me a gift that turned out to be invaluable.
It was a poster of Dio, signed by the band during what was to be the little rock'n'roll-legends last visit to Sweden.
Let me just reveal i a little short piece of information on my personal views.
My all time favourite top 5 records are (in chronological order):
BLACK SABBATH "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath"
DIO "The Last In Line"
QUEENSRYCHE "Operation: Mindcrime"
PARADISE LOST "Draconian Times"
OPETH "Ghost Reveries"

Adding to that, I would probably name Ronnie James Dio as my all time favourite singer if I was required to name just one (perhaps in stromg competition with a certain David Coverdale...).
In short: that gift was such a tremendous thing for me, and I can probably never repay them.
The picture above could also have been taken from the ongoing series "Record Madness", a collaboration between Tune Of The Day and Metal!, so in fact I have done quite the opposite... I've dragged them into more work online!

Over the years, Stones and Thetania have become good friends to me. We've watched shows together (MESHUGGAH at Debaser Medis stands out as the best one, I have to say, that was one magic evening), and we run into each other every once in a while.
It should be more though.
I should meet them more, especially as circumstances has placed us within Tyresö.
The reason I should meet them more is simple: they are good people, and they rock.

With that in mind, the first song for the Rebel Angel Ramblings comes quite natural.
It simply has to be DIO "We Rock".
It is the only way to salute Stones, Thetania and Tune Of The Day - as well as the perfect way to kick off this series of incoherent mumbo-jumbo.

This clip is taken live, from The Spectrum in Philadelphia, 1984.
Besides Ronnie himself, the band consists of Jimmy Bain (bass), Vinny Appice (drums) and Vivian Campbell (guitar), and I think that Ronnies voice was at his prime around 78-85, even if he kept going strong all the way to the end.

We Rock!

Queensrÿche - Empire

Then it's time to introduce today's tune, a continuation of Record Madness where the letter was "Q" this time so it's natural that we choose a song from a record that was presented earlier today.

Queensrÿche is an American progressive heavy metal band formed in 1981 in Bellevue, Washington. The band has released twelve studio albums, one EP and several DVDs, and continues to tour and record. The original lineup consisted of vocalist Geoff Tate, guitarist Chris DeGarmo, guitarist Michael Wilton, bassist Eddie Jackson and drummer Scott Rockenfield.

Empire is the fourth full-length album by the American heavy metal band Queensrÿche, released on August 20, 1990. The album reached triple-platinum status and the single extracted, the power ballad "Silent Lucidity", reached No. 1 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks and No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100. "Silent Lucidity" was also nominated for the Grammy Awards of 1992 in the categories Best Rock Song and Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group.

Geoff Tate lead vocals, keyboards, saxophone
Michael Wilton lead, rhythm & acoustic guitars, backing vocals
Eddie Jackson bass, backing vocals
Scott Rockenfield drums, percussion, keyboards
Chris DeGarmo lead, rhythm & acoustic guitars, backing vocals

Todays tune starts like this...
Last night the word came down, ten dead in Chinatown.
Innocent, their only crime was being in the wrong place, at the wrong time
Too bad, people say what's wrong with the kids today
Tell you right now they've got nothing to lose
They're building EMPIRE!
