Tool - Fear Inoculum

Monday, new week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

After thirteen years of silence, the expectations for TOOLs upcoming fifth studio album "Fear Inoculum" were going sky high, I mean it would be almost an impossible challenge for TOOL to live up that. So finally it arrived and we can start to judge it, will the wait has been in vain or did they really manage to pull it off, well after serval spins of "Fear Inoculum" (released August 30) I do like what I hear and I'm really happy that they manage to pull it off.

"Fear Inoculum" is a massive piece to dig into, almost 87 mins of music divided into ten tunes. Or seven tunes on the physical version, CD only sofar, still waiting on the real format on this, hopefully in the future. The 10 tunes include 4 instrumental pieces that are squeezed in between the original tracks, only one instrumental on the physical version. The tunes are progressive and very melodic, the vocals are all on the long epics and all spins over the 10 mins line and all follow the same line in basic compositions and structure that follows the typical TOOL way. Jones guitars and Carey's drums are the backbones of the album and spices it up with Keenan's voice to make it more mature. All the tunes on the album have a really high class, no low points at all, excellent musicianship makes the album really funny to listen to. Even the instrumental parts stand out like the drum and synth piece "Chocolate Chip Tip". The highlights are the harmonic and rhythmic "Descending", melodic with a twisty Middle Eastern touch and the crushing doomish chorus in "Pneuma", and the progressive and heavy 15 mins majestic beast "7empest". Overall "Fear Inoculum" is an outstanding album and is absolutely worth the wait.

Sum: "Fear Inoculum" is a marvelous album.

Fire Down Below - Hymn Of The Cosmic Man

Monday, time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

The Belgian group FIRE DOWN BELOW has with their second album release "Hymn Of The Cosmic Man" made themselves one of the most interesting grungier space rock band out there at the moment, where influences from classic bands like KYUSS and TOOL runs in their veins, a good mix in other words. Heavy distorted riffing, melodic harmony, cleaver vocals around a superb rhythm section with tricky and neat variation in the structures makes this album a treat for your ears.

From the grandiose and doomy instrumental opening tune "Red Giant" and the faster paced rocker "Ignition/Space Cruiser" sets trail how wildly this album sprawls, almost that they looses track of them self but manages to remain on the edge. "Saviour Of Man" is a catchy and wild rocker, "The Cosmic Pilgrim" is a swelling, gritty thing to the opposite atmospheric and softer tune "Nebula". "Ascension" opens up with a babbling guitar sound, that slowly builds up before it levels up in a soft crescendo until it's time again. The album closer "Adrift In A Sea Of Stars", is monster the clocks in just over 11 mins, the tune is made in two parts where the first half have a rockier approach and the second is more progressive and instrumental with superb lead melodies and interesting musicianship.

That this follow up to the 2016 debut, "Viper, Vixen, Goddess, Saint" is a big step forward, well done guys. "Hymn Of The Cosmic Man" was released on June 8 via by Ripple Music. The album was mixed by Brad Boatright (WINDHAND, SUNN O))), BELL WITCH)

Puscifer - The Remedy

PUSCIFER is an American rock supergroup formed in Los Angeles by Maynard James Keenan, known as the lead singer of the band's TOOL and A PERFECT CIRCLE. As Keenan is the only permanent member, he considers the project to be his "creative subconscious." In light of this, PUSCIFER is considered a pseudonym for his solo work.

"The Remedy" really is a borderline-extinction-level event where we're worrying about food, clothing and shelter rather than worrying about whether or not you should use the word "retard". We're so far away from the reality of what it means to survive, and buying into the polarized crap that goes on in the political arena, and also caught up in what you think you deserve. "I deserve free shipping!" You know? It's just so disconnected with real life, and what it takes to survive. And maybe because I grew up on a farm, and maybe because I've done that work and maybe because I live in Arizona, where everything will kill you if you're not aware... maybe I just have a different perspective than most people. Kids that spend all the time on their phone have no idea that it's raining — they have to wipe the water off of their screen to check and see if it's raining on their fucking app!

Underwing - Sunless Seed

UNDERWING was formed at the beginning of 2016 on the southern coast of Norway more prices at Arendal/Grimstad. Their vision was clear from the outset: creating a unique, honest musical expression.

By merging the groovy rhythms found in 70’s rock, the melancholic atmosphere of 90’s grunge and the sonic complexity of modern progressive metal and blues. UNDERWINGs soundscape can best be described as progressive grunge.

Accompanying the music are lyrics that deal with a number of subjects such as mental health in today’s materialistic society, life, death, all draped in an overarching theme of existentialism.

The quartet released their debut effort, “Kaela Upsweep”, on Indie label Pinecone Records on May 20, 2017, which quickly garnered critical acclaim both nationally and internationally. The music featured on their debut has been compared to legendary acts such as ALICE IN CHAINS, BLACK SABBATH, and TOOL.

A Perfect Circle - The Doomed

A PERFECT CIRCLE continue their march towards releasing their first new album since 2004 with the somber, black-and-white video for "The Doomed."

A PERFECT CIRCLE is set to release first new album since 2004 next year 😀

The song's clip, directed by Jeremy Danger and Travis Shinn, is impressively unvarnished. Each band member spends time in front of the camera, usually alone; there are no backdrops, few effects and less movement; the musicians stare impassively into the lens or look away. This continues for close to five minutes. Sometimes the background shifts from white to black.

A PERFECT CIRCLE is currently touring North America and will reach Europe for the summer and Sweden, whoo ha, really looking forward to see them live for the first time, see all the dates below.

Colossus - Pillars of Perennity

Swedish Colossus sets the mood for this Saturday, true to their name, this powerful trio performs a headstrong metal with roots deep in the impenetrable mire of the stoner/doom/sludge tradition nuansed with streaks of progressive rock, post metal and psychadelica.

A wide blend of influences are entwined and results in an accomplished and coherent music that is as direct and powerful as it is multi layered and meandering. Names that are commonly mentioned in relation to Colossus are Mastodon, Neurosis, Kyuss and Tool.

In spring 2012 Colossus entered Top Floor Studios and came out with a heavy and organic full length debut that not only outshines the EP on every topic but aims for a whole other level of musical composition and soundscape. The album has been mixed by Pontus Norgren and is guested by Lars G Petrov of Entombed and drummer extraordinaire Morgan Ågren of Mats/Morgan Band, Frank Zappa.

Todays tune "Pillars of Perennity" (featuring Lars G Petrov "Entombed") it's taken from the upcoming album "Wake", is an album that I really look forward to, of course on the real format Vinyl "Hint".

Soen - Savia

 

After reading a review on a band called Soen at my beloved friend "Chief Rebels" blog Metal! I really got hooked, the last few days I've spent a lot of time with Soen. Now i only wish that they will release this one on Vinyl.

Soen is a heavy metal group, a so called "supergroup" consisting of various high-profile extreme metal musicians. Formed by Martin Lopez along with Kim Platbarzdis back in 2005. Their debut album Cognitive was released on February 15, 2012. The album was mixed by David Bottrill (Tool, Coheed and Cambria, Silverchair, Smashing Pumpkins, Muse etc.) and mastered by João Carvalho. There's also a bonus track on the Japanese edition called “Writhen”

Soen's music is "melodic, technical softish light heavy and progressive" there is an stylistic similarities to the music of Tool.

The lineup consisting of former Opeth, Amon Amarth drummer Martin Lopez, former Death, Testament, Sebastian Bach, Iced Earth and Sadus bassist Steve DiGiorgio, former Willowtree vocalist Joel Ekelöf and guitarist Kim Platbarzdis.

Soen was at the Revolver Film Company in Gothenburg the 14th of January recording a music video.
