Kikagaku Moyo - Kodama

Magic things can occur when bands pick their influences from different directions, and that´s what´s happened with KIKAGAKU MOYO and their fusion of western psych and folk rock. While they obviously look to the 1960s and nod to the complexity of the 1970s, they see the music through their very own organic, curious and nuanced prism. In recent years, their music has become more focused and concentrated, with some weirdo pop moves penetrated the deep psych. But they´re still a band capable of exploding from softest stillness to pure jap-style noiserock – and that’s why we love them.

Founders Go Kurosawa and Tomo Katsuradas started as street musicians before the rest of the band one after another joined the gang. Their debut was self-released digitally in 2013 before the rest of the world caught on, and in 2014 it was released on vinyl. That same year the band released another two albums – “Mammatus Clouds” and “Forest of Lost Children” – before going on a tour that took them from Austin Psych Fest to Pustervik in Gothenburg. In 2016 the band’s fourth album “House in the Tall Grass” was released on the Japanese label Guruguru Brain.

KIKAGAKU MOYO performs at Folkteatern on Saturday on Stay Out West.

KIKAGAKU MOYO (幾何学模様 Kikagaku Moyō) translates to "geometric patterns.

Today's tune "Kodama" is taken from 2nd album "Forest of Lost Children", enjoy!

Fantastic Negrito - An Honest Man

Fantastic Negrito is the incarnation of a musician who is reborn after going through a lot of awful shit. In fact, the name Fantastic Negrito represents his third rebirth, literally coming back from death this time. The narrative on this man is as important as the sound, because the narrative is the sound. Songs born from a long hard life channeled through black roots music. Slide guitar, drums, piano. Urgent, desperate, edgy.

Fantastic Negrito is the story of a man who struggled to “make it”, who “got it”, and who lost it all. For anyone who ever felt like it was over yet hoped it wasn’t, this is your music; blues harnessed, forged in realness. For anyone who ever considered getting their old high-school band back together, this is your inspiration. These are singular songs by a true musician who writes and produces. They are his fuel as he embarks on the third comeback of his life.

Xavier Amin Dphrepaulezz (born 1968), better known by his stage name Fantastic Negrito, is an African-American singer-songwriter whose music has spanned blues, R&B, and roots music.

Fantastic Negrito plays at Pustervik (Stay Out West) on Saturday

Today's tune "An Honest Man" is taken from the self titled EP, enjoy!

Mazzy Star - Fade Into You

American alternative rock band Mazzy Star who had one of the 90's most beautiful alternative rock song "Fade Into You". The band formed in Santa Monica, California, in 1989 from the group Opal, a collaboration of guitarist David Roback and bassist Kendra Smith. Roback's friend Hope Sandoval became the group's vocalist when Smith left the band.

During their most active period Hope Sandoval and David Robeck created a soundscape where each crushing syllable breathes scathing concern, love, and more than its fair share of darkness; we all have our own associations with Mazzy Star’s deep sorrow-rich music. Expect a new addition to the audio backdrop that gives our depressions their superb soundtrack. Sandoval and Robeck will release album number four this year, something that makes you, me, and the rest of the world smile gently.

Mazzy Star is probably best known for todays tune "Fade into You" which brought the band some success in the mid 1990s and was the group's biggest mainstream hit, earning extensive exposure on MTV, VH1, and radio airplay. Roback and Sandoval are the creative center of the band, with Sandoval as lyricist and Roback as composer of the majority of the band's material.

Mazzy Star and Stay Out West is a combination that promises queue. We are well aware of this, but honestly, which do you associate Mazzy Star with most: daylight and a blue sky or compact darkness and brutal intimacy?

Mazzy Star plays at Annedalskyrkan fri 00:30

Way Out West’s unique city based format taps into Gothenburg’s thriving music scene, with performances at some of the best venues the city has to offer. From Thursday evening to Saturday night (or Sunday morning if you can last that long) the city’s rock clubs, nightclubs, churches, theaters and cultural centers will showcase both breaking and more established acts as part of the festival’s club concept Stay Out West.

Bands playing the club nights will not be appearing on the stages at the festival site. A 3-day festival pass is valid for admittance for all Stay Out West shows, Thursday through Saturday, but does not guarantee entrance. Please note that the capacities of the venues is limited and many of these shows will be filled to capacity early, so if there is a certain band you want to see try to get there early. It will not be possible to buy separate tickets for club gigs, neither in advance nor at the door. Make sure you exchange your ticket for a festival wristband before visiting any of the clubs, as paper tickets are not valid for entrance.

All club venues with the exception of Annedalskyrkan have an age limit of 18 years (this is due to Swedish liquor laws). The age limit at Annedalskrykan is 13 years (a 3-day youth wristband will gain you admittance). Below you will find a list of Stay Out West clubs and their addresses. Show times and venues will be released closer to the festival and are subject to change.

Todays tune "Fade into You" is taken from the second album "So Tonight That I Might See", that was released on October 5, 1993
