Nile - Permitting the Noble Dead to Descend to the Underworld
George Kollias, drum player from the band Nile made a visit to Sweden for a small clinic on slagverket here in Stockholm. I actually took the opportunity to make a visit. I then fell into a crowded store with great expectations of what would happen, when he got up on the drum stool he was greeted by standing invasions. George gave us two songs of the Nile and a self-crafted demo coming on his upcoming solo album eventually. This sympathetic gentleman was very fun to listen to, mixed with drum facts, both the drum patterns and scales, mixed with humor and questions from both fans and drum interested, it was really entertaining to listen to. The store had plenty of drum geeks, as expected, ran into a friend, Ronnie (The drummer from the Grave), who always as nice, just back from a tour with Demonical.
That I'm getting old, noticeable the years, I bring my compact camera and my system camera to document a bit, great opportunities. Is not it every day you're shooting a drummer like this. But senile me, I forget of course my memory cards at home ... damn.
Well enough about that;
Some info about George and Nile :)
George Kollias (born August 30, 1977 in Korinthos, Greece) is a Greek heavy metal drummer best known for his work with American death metal band Nile. He is the first of their four drummers to perform every song on more than one full length album (handling drum duties so far on Annihilation of the Wicked, Ithyphallic and Those Whom the Gods Detest). He started playing drums at the age of 10 on yoghurt cages in diffrent sizes before he had saved enough money to buy his own drumkit. Some years later started drum lessons with Greek drummer Yannis Stavropoulos. In addition to being the drummer of Nile he also teaches drums at the Modern Music School in Athens.
He previously drummed for Sickening Horror, a death metal band. He also used to be in the Greek melodic death metal band Nightfall, but left the band in 2005 to join Nile.
George Kollias made an instructional drumming DVD called "Intense Metal Drumming" that was released in July 2008.
George's hand technique allows him great precision as well, though it is not nearly as individualistic as his foot technique. George grips the stick fully with his index through ring finger, letting them stretch forward and wrap around the stick. He does not use his thumb and index finger to create a swivel. Instead, all of his speed stems from his wrists, much like his ankle usage in the kick.
Nile is an American death metal band from Greenville, South Carolina, formed in 1993. Their music and lyrics are inspired by Ancient Egyptian mysticism, history, religion, and art, as well as stories by H. P. Lovecraft.
Current members in Nile:
Karl Sanders − vocals, guitars, bass, keyboards, additional instruments (since 1993)
Dallas Toler-Wade − vocals, guitars (since 1996), bass (studio only) (2007-2010)
George Kollias − drums, percussion (since 2004)
Chris Lollis - bass, vocals (since 2010)
Todays tune "Permitting the Noble Dead to Descend to the Underworld” is taken from the sixth studio album "Those Whom the Gods Detest”. The album was released on November 3, 2009.
The cover artwork, a depiction of the Egyptian Pharaoh Akhenaten, was brought to realization this time around by Michal "Xaay" Loranc, whom Karl Sanders had previously worked with on his second solo record Saurian Exorcisms.
