Persefone - Spiritual Migration

New week and it's time to crown a new album and now that we're in the middle of the summer heat so fits a little obscure band in perfectly. Hailing from Andorra, we now bring you one of the most exciting new acts on the ever-growing metal scene; Persefone.

Record Of The Week is the 4th album “Spriritual Migration” by Persefone, it was mixed by Jacob Hansen, at Hansen Studios in Denmark, and is a portrait of all the emotions the band has gone through within the first decade of their existence. Fine-tuning has never been a better word to describe the progression of a band, than in the case of Persefone.

You simply need to hear “Spiritual Migration” to believe it.

Persefone is an Andorran death metal band formed in October 2001. The band located in the small nation of Andorra; founding members are Carlos Lozano Quintanilla, Jordi Gorgues Mateu, Toni Mestre Coy, and Xavi Pérez. In 2002 they were joined by Miguel Espinosa Ortiz. The band was formed in 2003 and after just a year, the first album, “Truth Inside the Shades”, was recorded. Carlos Lozano (Guitar and vocals), Miguel Espinosa (Keyboards and vocals), Jordi Gorgues (guitar) and Toni Mestre (bass) parting from Death metal, through progressive passages and even acoustics, demonstrated to have a great musicality.

Bands like Opeth, Borknagar, Arcturus, Symphony X or Cacophony are all a reference for this album.

While writing, recording and mixing the 4th album that you should be listening to now, “Spiritual Migration”. Persefone had the opportunity to head out on a lengthy European tour as support band for Norwegian proggers Leprous. The tour tour took Persefone through 15 countries and 19 shows, spreading the word on this fine band and their explosive performance. So much, that Vicisolum Records immediately signed the band for a 2013 release.

Persefone is innovative music for the open-minded listener.

Borknagar - The Earthling

Borknagar is a progressive black metal band from Bergen, Norway, founded in 1995 by Øystein Garnes Brun. The band's style combines black metal and folk metal with progressive and melodic elements. Borknagar's lyrics often deal with philosophy, paganism, nature, and the cosmos.

Earlier this year, or in fact March 26, 2012 did Borknagar release the ninth full-length album "Urd". It marks the return of vocalist/bass guitarist ICS Vortex as a permanent member, and is the second and last album by the band to feature David Kinkade; he recorded the drums as a full member of the band, but left for Soulfly before the release of the album, and is credited as a session player.

Borknagar members:

Vintersorg – harsh/clean vocals, choirs
Øystein G. Brun – electric and acoustic guitars
Jens Ryland – lead guitar
ICS Vortex – bass, clean vocals & choirs
Lars A. Nedland – keyboards, clean vocals & choirs
David Kinkade – drums & percussion

Todays tune "The Earthling" is taken from the album "Urd".

Borknagar’s founder, Øystein G. Brun commented the following about the artwork and the album: “The cover and design for ‘Urd’ is spot on when it comes to portraying the very core of the band. This time around we wanted an earthly expression through our cover and general design to support and empower the main themes on the album. You can almost smell and feel the texture of the old Norse wooden carvings – still there is a sophisticated and eclectic approach to the expression that entwines perfectly into the music. Marcelo Vasco enhanced our ideas into brilliance, he painted the face of the beast that is about to be unleashed…”

"Our previous album was called “Universal” and where should we go after an album title with such a magnitude? Well, we decided to head back home to earth. We really wanted to get back to the core of the band, where it all started – the admiration and pondering about nature and mankind’s place therein. “Urd” is the name of one of the norns that according to northern mythology stands under Yggdrasill and weaves the lifeline of mankind. “Urd” is representing the past, while “Verdande” is representing the present and “Skuld” is representing the future. You might very well say that this is an ancient expression of what we today know as DNA. And I have always been very fascinated by the fact that parts and bits of our DNA actually derive from the very beginning of time. All living creatures are somewhat connected to the very first organic cell. That is some of the story behind the album title
