Fire Down Below - Hymn Of The Cosmic Man

Monday, time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

The Belgian group FIRE DOWN BELOW has with their second album release "Hymn Of The Cosmic Man" made themselves one of the most interesting grungier space rock band out there at the moment, where influences from classic bands like KYUSS and TOOL runs in their veins, a good mix in other words. Heavy distorted riffing, melodic harmony, cleaver vocals around a superb rhythm section with tricky and neat variation in the structures makes this album a treat for your ears.

From the grandiose and doomy instrumental opening tune "Red Giant" and the faster paced rocker "Ignition/Space Cruiser" sets trail how wildly this album sprawls, almost that they looses track of them self but manages to remain on the edge. "Saviour Of Man" is a catchy and wild rocker, "The Cosmic Pilgrim" is a swelling, gritty thing to the opposite atmospheric and softer tune "Nebula". "Ascension" opens up with a babbling guitar sound, that slowly builds up before it levels up in a soft crescendo until it's time again. The album closer "Adrift In A Sea Of Stars", is monster the clocks in just over 11 mins, the tune is made in two parts where the first half have a rockier approach and the second is more progressive and instrumental with superb lead melodies and interesting musicianship.

That this follow up to the 2016 debut, "Viper, Vixen, Goddess, Saint" is a big step forward, well done guys. "Hymn Of The Cosmic Man" was released on June 8 via by Ripple Music. The album was mixed by Brad Boatright (WINDHAND, SUNN O))), BELL WITCH)

Sum: A grandeur Belgian release that should check up!

Elton John - Rocket Man

Sunday, fathers day, yes I got breakfast this morning from the kids, lovely :)

Time for a classic for this rainy Sunday on the eleventh day in the eleventh month and eleven o'clock.

Today's tune "Rocket Man" (officially titled "Rocket Man (I Think It's Going to Be a Long, Long Time)") is a song composed by Elton John and Bernie Taupin and originally performed by John. The song first appeared on John's 1972 album "Honky Château" and became a hit single, rising to No. 2 in the UK and No. 6 in the US.

The song was inspired by the short story "The Rocket Man" in The Illustrated Man by Ray Bradbury, and echoes the theme of David Bowie's 1969 song "Space Oddity" (both recordings were produced by Gus Dudgeon). But according to an account in Elizabeth Rosenthal's book His Song: The Musical Journey of Elton John, the song was inspired by Taupin's sighting of either a shooting star or a distant aeroplane.

The song describes a Mars-bound astronaut's mixed feelings at leaving his family in order to do his job. Rosenthal's account goes on to relate that the notion of astronauts no longer being perceived as heroes, but in fact as an "everyday occupation", led Taupin to the song's opening lines: "She packed my bags last night, pre-flight. Zero hour: 9 a.m. And I'm gonna be high as a kite by then."

Musically, the song is a highly arranged ballad anchored by piano, with atmospheric texture added by synthesizer (played on the recording by engineer Dave Hentschel) and processed slide guitar. It is also known for being the first song in John's catalog to feature what would become the signature backing vocal combination of his band at the time, Dee Murray, Nigel Olsson and Davey Johnstone.

The first stanza of "Rocket Man" was thought of by Bernie Taupin whilst he was on the motorway heading to his parents' home; he had to "repeat it to himself for two hours," which was "unfortunate", but in later interviews he said that since it gave him a hit, it was all worthwhile.

The song has been a staple of John's concerts. Among numerous other performances, John played "Rocket Man" at the launch site of Space Shuttle Discovery in 1998.

The song includes the line, ""And I'm gonna be high as a kite by then". The website Schmoop commented, "The phrase "high as a kite" is a common idiom almost always used to refer to drug use. There's nothing to suggest that lyricist Bernie Taupin really intended the double entendre, but the song did come out at the peak of stoner '70s culture. The usual meaning of the expression, which Taupin would have been familiar with, is highly intoxicated.

In his own interpretation of Elton John’s iconic hit, Iranian filmmaker and refugee Majid Adin reimagines “Rocket Man” to tell a new story of adventure, loneliness and hope. The Cut, proudly supported by YouTube, invited filmmakers to create the first official music videos for three of Elton’s most famous songs: http://eltonjohn.com/thecut

Gotthard - Stay With Me

The Swiss hard rock band GOTTHARD released their twelfth studio album "Silver" on 13 January 2017 through G Records. The album was intended to celebrate the band's 25th anniversary, and its name is a reference to a silver wedding anniversary. The album produced one single, "Stay With Me", released on 18 November 2016, a big and powerful tune, delivers a sophisticated rock explosion and hits the sweet spot between half ballad and monumental hymn, see it below.

GOTTHARD is a Swiss hard rock band founded in Lugano by Steve Lee and Leo Leoni. Their last eleven albums have all reached number 1 in the Swiss album charts, making them one of the most successful Swiss acts ever. Singer Steve Lee died in a motorcycle accident on October 5, 2010.

On November 11, 2011, Gotthard announced a new singer, Nic Maeder, through their official Facebook page and their website with their new song "Remember It's Me"

The band today:

Nic Maeder – vocals
Leo Leoni – guitars, production
Freddy Scherer – guitars
Marc Lynn – bass
Hena Habegger – drums

Enjoy today's tune that grows bigger from chorus to chorus, and Nic’s fateful encounter with “good” and “bad” becomes a superbly staged rock fairy tale, partly he reminds me of David Coverdale.

King Buffalo - Centurion

Friday and finally this week is over, got 2 days off, the hole weekend, whoa!! This evening, almost by my self, a glutefree beer, some music spinning on the stereo and I feel free, happy and totaly relaxed, even if im dead tierd after a hard week at work, the music in the space make me enjoy life so much. Got a little flash back earlier today, was thinking of KING BUFFALOS show that they did earlier this year here in Sweden, a magical time, so when I came home it was time to air the vinyl a bit, a spin of the "Repeater" EP with Rochester, psychedelic/heavy blues band KING BUFFALO.

An EP that is an magical minimalist drone rumble at it's best. Almost 25 minutes of the finest of KING BUFFALO. 3 tunes which slides like the best beer, so smoothly through the mouth, through the throat down to the stomach and finally ends up in the toilet an hour later. Except for the last sentence. The last tune on the EP "Centurion" is a true magnificent piece that invades your ears with heavy driving riffs and a familiar groove. Psychedelic, blues and stoner overtones combine with thunderous bass and drums, reminiscent of heavy 70’s rock. A wall of sound, a trio of soaring sounds, and an unrelenting pace merge to form their own musical styling.

So enjoy today's tune, I will for sure.

Here is a live clip from the same tour, but in Norway at Parkteatret in Oslo, 26.04.2018!
