Opeth was founded in Stockholm in 1990 and has since recorded 10 albums, the latest "Heritage" was released 2011. Their unique blend of progressive metal, classical music, jazz, folk, blues and death metal has made the band successful in Scandinavia and in the U.S.
Opeth is known everywhere for their extraordinary performances that binds brilliance and skills with humorous touches. And when the band is playing at home, we know that we can expect that little extra. Last Friday did these guys play at Gröna Lund, Stockholm.
The fact that the Gröna Lund big stage does not directly create a more intimate atmosphere that the band actually fits best in. The gig starts with four tracks from the last record "Heritage", and thoughts naturally go around, could this be the same setlist that has been played this summer of festivals and similar shows, no, I can not imagine that, but who knows, myself I have a tendency to always snoop out what to be played but not this time, here I was more private than you can be.
The fifth song "Windowpane" I suspect "Owls in the moss"(Swedish saying), a lovely piece from the past, will it might be a bit tougher than that I wonder, oh yes Mikael Åkerfeldt presents song number six as: The next song is a Hip Hop song called "Yo Motherfucker" ("Heir Apparent"), his small talk is as entertaining as usual. And finally some "chugga chugga" that blogging colleague Robert expressed himself. Both me and Robert shook loose and dig with the biggest smile you ever seen this summer. Then they fired off some classics like "The Grand Conjuration", "Demon of the Fall" and "The Drapery Falls", which then ends the concert with "Deliverance" as a worthy finisher on a fantastic concert.
Now I look forward to actually upcoming gig at Södran, Stockholm when these gentlemen will play acoustic. Assume it will be magical evening.
Here are some pictures from the gig:
Todays tune is the title track from the sixth studio album "Deliverance", following the band's highly successful 2001 album, Blackwater Park. It was recorded between July 22 and September 4, 2002 (see 2002 in music), at the same time as Damnation, which was released the following year. The two albums contrast starkly with one another, purposely dividing the band's two most prevalent styles, as Deliverance is considered to be one of the band's heaviest albums, whereas Damnation experiments with a much mellower progressive rock-influenced sound.
The clip is taken from Opeth's Lamentations Live Relese from 2003.
