Opeth - Deliverance

Opeth was founded in Stockholm in 1990 and has since recorded 10 albums, the latest "Heritage" was released 2011. Their unique blend of progressive metal, classical music, jazz, folk, blues and death metal has made the band successful in Scandinavia and in the U.S.

Opeth is known everywhere for their extraordinary performances that binds brilliance and skills with humorous touches. And when the band is playing at home, we know that we can expect that little extra. Last Friday did these guys play at Gröna Lund, Stockholm.

The fact that the Gröna Lund big stage does not directly create a more intimate atmosphere that the band actually fits best in. The gig starts with four tracks from the last record "Heritage", and thoughts naturally go around, could this be the same setlist that has been played this summer of festivals and similar shows, no, I can not imagine that, but who knows, myself I have a tendency to always snoop out what to be played but not this time, here I was more private than you can be.

The fifth song "Windowpane" I suspect "Owls in the moss"(Swedish saying), a lovely piece from the past, will it might be a bit tougher than that I wonder, oh yes Mikael Åkerfeldt presents song number six as: The next song is a Hip Hop song called "Yo Motherfucker" ("Heir Apparent"), his small talk is as entertaining as usual. And finally some "chugga chugga" that blogging colleague Robert expressed himself. Both me and Robert shook loose and dig with the biggest smile you ever seen this summer. Then they fired off some classics like "The Grand Conjuration", "Demon of the Fall" and "The Drapery Falls", which then ends the concert with "Deliverance" as a worthy finisher on a fantastic concert.

Now I look forward to actually upcoming gig at Södran, Stockholm when these gentlemen will play acoustic. Assume it will be magical evening.

Here are some pictures from the gig:

Todays tune is the title track from the sixth studio album "Deliverance", following the band's highly successful 2001 album, Blackwater Park. It was recorded between July 22 and September 4, 2002 (see 2002 in music), at the same time as Damnation, which was released the following year. The two albums contrast starkly with one another, purposely dividing the band's two most prevalent styles, as Deliverance is considered to be one of the band's heaviest albums, whereas Damnation experiments with a much mellower progressive rock-influenced sound.

The clip is taken from Opeth's Lamentations Live Relese from 2003.

Opeth - The Devil's Orchard

The progressive metal band Opeth is releasing a new album on the 15 of September.
Named "Heritage", I found a sound track on it that I wanted to play for u all.
It is a really mystified tune with a real progressive sound in it, love it.

Heritage will signal a departure for Opeth from the musical style of their past albums. Originally, the first two songs Mikael Åkerfeldt wrote for the album were in the style of Watershed, but he scrapped them soon after. After writing "The Lines in My Hands" and speaking with Martin Mendez, Åkerfeldt decided to write the rest of the album in that style.

Heritage will feature no death growls, which have been present on every Opeth album except Damnation. Unlike Damnation, however, the music will have a prominent fusion influence. The album's title track is influenced by Jan Johansson and Swedish folk music.

Åkerfeldt said in the album's press release:
“It will be our 10th album/observation. I dig it; we all do. In fact, it feels like I've been building up to write for and participate on an album like this since I was 19. It's quite intense at times in some 'old' murky way, and quite beautiful and stark at times, if I may say so myself. It's obvious I'm going to say nice things about it since I wrote, basically, the whole piece, but I guess it will raise a few eyebrows and it certainly is an acquired taste. I think you'll need a slightly deeper understanding of our music as a whole to be able to appreciate this record. I've realized my influences for this album are so diverse that I can't really say what it sounds like. If I can compare it to any other band, it would have to be Opeth, but it's different from the stuff we've done before. I've listened a lot to Alice Cooper for the last year, yet I can't say it sounds like No More Mr. Nice Guy. I hope you'll like it once you hear it."

The current members are:
Mikael Åkerfeldt on lead vocals, guitars
Martin Mendez on bass guitar
Martin "Axe" Axenrot on drums, percussion
Fredrik Åkesson on guitars, backing vocals

Lets hear it,

Peace, Thetania
