Mark Lanegan Band - Stitch It Up

From the opening bars of Disbelief Suspension onwards, it’s clear that "Somebody’s Knocking" is an album made by someone deeply obsessed with how music – with all its primal, spiritual healing power – truly penetrates the soul. As a result, there’s joy in the music, as if created from a perfect set of inspirations smashed and grabbed from God’s own record shop.

"Somebody’s Knocking" is the eleventh solo album by ex-SCREAMING TREES frontman, Mark Lanegan. Lanegan says that JOY DIVISION, THE STOOGES, LOVE and, perhaps surprisingly, NEW ORDER have all influenced this album. Despite having always been a fan of electronic music, the sounds are now making their way into his otherwise fags-and-whiskey-drenched gruff rock sound as it’s what he listens to most these days.

Although "Somebody’s Knocking" came together in an eleven-day session in L.A. (Lanegan’s hometown of the last twenty-two years), many of the deepest musical influences on the record are European – be they the aforementioned electronic artists or newer, murkier forms provided by writing partners Martin Jenkins (who records as Pye Corner Audio) Sietse van Gorkom who co-wrote 7 tracks including first single and today's tune "Stitch It Up", or Rob Marshall – a collaborator on "Gargoyle" and on his own, forthcoming debut album as "Humanist". In each case, Lanegan approached working with each of the writers from the perspective of a fan.

"Somebody’s Knocking" is expected release: 18th oct 2019. Pre-order ‘Somebody’s Knocking’ here: https://pias.lnk.to/mlb_sk

Mark Lanegan Band will come to Europe in October, see all the Tour Dates below.

The video for today's tune was Directed by Joe Cardamone. Starring Donal Logue as ‘Jimmy The Cab Driver’. Taken from the forthcoming album Somebody's Knocking to be released on October 18th. Enjoy!

Mark Lanegan Band - Sad Lover

MARK LANEGAN BAND has rolled out his tour machine in support of his latest album, "Phantom Radio". The iconic alt rocker and his merry backing band has a bunch of dates for Europe, see below. According to a press release, this outing serves as LANEGANs first with a full band since mid-2012. Tomorrow he lands in Stockholm for a show at Debaser Strand. A show I sadly will miss as I off to Gothenburg for the first step in the "Swedish Eurovision machine" Melodifestivalen. But if you have nothing to do, go and see it I am almost sure it will be a magical evening.

MARK LANEGAN (born November 25, 1964) is an American alternative rock musician and singer-songwriter. Born and raised in Ellensburg, Washington, Lanegan began his musical career in 1984, forming the grunge band SCREAMING TREES with Gary Lee Conner, Van Conner and Mark Pickerel. During his time in the band, Lanegan also started a low-key solo career and released his first solo studio album, The Winding Sheet, in 1990. Since 1990, he has released a further six studio albums and has received critical recognition and moderate commercial success.

In an interview with The Quietus, Lanegan stated that he used a phone app called FunkBox to write the drum parts on some of the songs.

Todays tune "Sad Lover" is taken from the ninth studio album "Phantom Radio" is by MARK LANEGAN, performing as the "MARK LANEGAN BAND". It was released on October 21, 2014 on Vagrant Records.

Mark Lanegan Band - Bleeding Muddy Water

Mark Lanegan (born November 25, 1964) is an American alternative rock musician and singer-songwriter. Born and raised in Ellensburg, Washington, Lanegan began his musical career in 1985, forming the grunge band Screaming Trees with Gary Lee Conner, Van Conner and Mark Pickerel. During his time in the band, Lanegan also started a low-key solo career and released his first solo studio album, The Winding Sheet, in 1990. Since 1990, he has released a further six studio albums and has received critical recognition and moderate commercial success.

He comes with the darkness, but it’s no foolish "evil" nor forced melancholy, only a subtle gloom that is not so much about self-pity as contempt for civilization, self-destructiveness, and morbid humor. No other singer from Lanegan’s generation dives into the depths so naturally, or does grief as dignified and consistently amazing to witness.

It would be an understatement to call the list of musical projects Mark Lanegan has had his hands in impressive: Screaming Trees, Queens of the Stone Age, Gutter Twins, Twilight Singers, and most recently, the three graceful albums of Belle & Sebastian's Isobel Campbell. Mark Lanegan’s CV is like a summary over the past two decades’ most exciting indiependent phenomena. On his last solo album alone (Bubblegum from 2004) he collaborates with, among others, PJ Harvey, Josh Homme, Greg Dulli, Duff McKagan, and Izzy Stradlin. Suffice it to say, Mark is popular among the popular.

But trying to pin down the man musically is ultimately a doomed endeavor. Even in the face of an impressive array of collaborations and projects, it is when he does his own thing that Mark Lanegan’s brilliance becomes most apparent. Lanegan’s distinctive baritone storms over rock chords, synths and loops on completely its own terms. On the most recent Blues Funeral, Lanegan shows that he heeds his duty as a rock star emeritus, avoiding clichés and providing us with an antidote to the mawkish indie and increasingly vacuous hip-hop that has invaded popular culture of late.

He is special, Mark Lanegan. When he locks his eyes on you at this year's Way Out West, we recommend you just let go, get sucked in and disappear for a while. Then you'll see what we mean.

The Mark Lanegan Band performing Bleeding Muddy Water at the Echoplex in Los Angeles, CA on 2/9/12

4AD session now live 8 May 2012

1. The Gravedigger’s Song

Mark Lanegan Band - The Gravedigger's Song

Mark Lanegan (born November 25, 1964) is an American alternative rock musician and singer-songwriter. Born and raised in Ellensburg, Washington, Lanegan began his musical career in 1985, forming the grunge band Screaming Trees with Gary Lee Conner, Van Conner and Mark Pickerel. During his time in the band, Lanegan also started a low-key solo career and released his first solo studio album, The Winding Sheet, in 1990. Since 1990, he has released a further six studio albums and has received moderate commercial success and critical recognition.

Lanegan has also collaborated with various artists and bands throughout his career. Following the dissolution of The Screaming Trees in 2000, he became a member of Queens of the Stone Age and is featured on three of the band's albums—Rated R (2000), Songs for the Deaf (2002) and Lullabies to Paralyze (2005). Lanegan also formed The Gutter Twins with Greg Dulli in 2003, released three collaboration albums with former Belle and Sebastian singer Isobel Campbell, and contributed to releases by Melissa Auf der Maur, Martina Topley Bird, Creature with the Atom Brain Bomb the Bass, Soulsavers and Mad Season.

Lanegan has a distinctive baritone voice that has been desribed "as scratchy as a three-day beard yet as supple and pliable as moccasin leather" and compared to Tom Waits.

Todays tune "The Gravedigger's Song" is taken from his seventh studio album "Blues Funeral" released on February 3, 2012. The album's lead single, "The Gravedigger's Song", was released on December 5, 2011

Aside from collaborations with Isobel Campbell, Blues Funeral is Lanegan's first studio album in eight years since Bubblegum (2004).
