Cock Sparrer - One By One

Sunday, time for a classic.

Today we pick a tune from the classic band COCK SPARRER that played at Kraken, here in Stockholm last night. A marvellous show as usal. Rarely do a band get the reaction that these guys do, they really know how to deliver a good evening and the set list was full of classics. A COCK SPARRER show is an event. It’s like cup final day. A family singalong. Theirs is a career in reverse, they’re bigger now than they ever were. Regularly headlining all the major punk festivals in Europe and occasionally hitting the US to headline events such as Punk Rock Bowling and Riot Fest.

COCK SPARRER are widely considered to be one of the most influential Street Punk bands in history.

2017 sees them celebrate their 45th Anniversary. Also the same year for the bands release “FOREVER”, their first album since 2007s Lars Frederiksen (RANCID) produced album "Here We Stand". 45 years on, still five blokes in a pub, five mates having a laugh, more than just a band.

The thing about Sparrer is that they're not just a band. They are childhood friends and have been making a noise since they got together way back in 1972. They were playing, drinking, going to football and generally making a nuisance of themselves when the late 1970s punk scene started in London. Finally it seemed that there were hundreds of like minded people with the same attitude.

However, the boys were from the wrong side of town and didn’t quite fit in with the ‘art school’ scene - they were more at home on the terraces wearing jeans and Dr Martens boots than being fashion victims in bondage trousers. They’ve always done things the way they wanted to. As Punk ended up with its own set of rules they were always on the outside as they just didn’t buy into it.

Despite being courted by SEX PISTOLS manager Malcolm McLaren (who they turned away for not buying a round of drinks), early tours with the SMALL FACES, THIN LIZZY, MOTÖRHEAD, SLADE amongst others and a record deal with Decca, the ‘music industry’ just wasn’t ready for COCK SPARRER.

Today's tune "One By One" from the band's new LP "Forever!", enjoy!

Cock Sparrer - We're Coming Back

Day two of Pretty Shitty Kjell was a little more stale than the evening before, it may have been a little too much alcohol the night before? Yeah, what do I know, but the music was nothing wrong with, just saw the evenings headliner that really gave their best and showed which cabinet that the wig would be stopped in.

Cock Sparrer are a punk rock band formed in 1972 in the East End of London, England. Although they never enjoyed much commercial success, they are considered one of the most influential streetpunk bands, helping pave the way for the late-1970s punk scene and the Oi! subgenre. Their songs have been covered by many punk, Oi!, and hardcore bands.

Their style was influenced by pub rock, glam rock and raw 1960s beat music as delivered by bands like the Small Faces and The Who. Their lyrics mostly dealt with topics related to the daily lives of working class people.

Their name derives from their original name, Cock Sparrow, a Cockney term of familiarity.

Here are some pictures from the show:

Todays tune "We're Coming Back" is taken from the second album "Shock Troops" released in 1983, live from Cock Sparrer's 2009 performance in San Francisco.

Angelic Upstarts - Solidarity

Pretty Shitty & Kjell Hell organize once again a festival here in Stockholm, two days on Fryshuset Klubben. Following the success of Cock Sparrer gig in spring 2010, so has Kjell Hell and Pretty Shitty Town joined forces, strange it would be otherwise after the commitment, happiness and total satisfaction as shown in connection with last gig out of both visitor, bands and staff. One thing is clear after that, Sweden has a punk scene and you are part of it! So for this year the festival expanded to two days and in a flash i got sold out, so unfortunately no more tickets available. Angelic Upstarts are an English punk rock/Oi! band formed in South Shields in 1977. The band espoused an anti-fascist and socialist working class philosophy, and have been associated with the skinhead subculture. More than two decades after its release, their debut single, "The Murder Of Liddle Towers", was included in Mojo magazine’s list of the best punk rock singles of all time.

The original line up consisted of Mensi - Thomas Mensforth (vocals), Mond (Ray Cowie) (guitar), Steve Forsten (bass) and Decca Wade (drums).

Todays tune ”Solidarity” is a single from 1983, todays clip is the original version of the tune and the Spotify link is taken from the album ”Live From The Justice”. Enjoy!
