Pharoah Sanders - Moon Child

This week the spotlight shines on Pharoah Sanders – a true visionary and legend playing Way Out West this year. Pharoah Sanders possesses one of the most distinctive tenor saxophone sounds in jazz. Harmonically rich and heavy with overtones, Sanders’ sound can be as raw and abrasive as it is possible for a saxophonist to produce. Yet, Sanders is highly regarded to the point of reverence by a great many jazz fans. Although he made his name with expressionistic, nearly anarchic free jazz in John Coltrane’s late ensembles of the mid-’60s, Sanders’ later music is guided by more graceful concerns.

He also worked with Don Cherry and Alice Coltrane before leading his own ensemble. As a solo artist he released a long line of stellar solo recordings who came to define what we know as astral jazz or cosmic jazz.

”Probably the best tenor player in the world”, said Ornette Coleman about him. ”Trane was the Father, Pharoah was the Son, I am the Holy Spirit”, said Albert Ayler.

The first concert Kamasi Washington went to as a kid was a show by Pharoah Sanders at the iconic World Stage in L.A.

Pharoah Sanders will perform at Way Out West on Friday 9th at Flamingo 17:30

Today's tune "Moon Child" is the title tune taken from an album led by saxophonist Pharoah Sanders recorded in 1989 and released on the Dutch Timeless label.
