At the end of Linnégatan, next to Linnéplatsen and near to the Majorna district, lies the green oasis called Slottsskogen (literal meaning the Castle’s Forest). Located in the middle of Gothenburg, the park acts as the lungs of the city and is therefore very close to our hearts. In the summer months the park transforms into a meeting place for the city’s inhabitants to stroll, picnic, and play Frisbee. The contrast between nature and the surrounding urban environment makes it an unbeatable setting for a world-class music festival that collects some of today’s most interesting bands and artists. Way Out West and Slottsskogen are truly a perfect match.
From Gothenburg Central Station you can reach the park by foot in about 30 minutes, or ten minutes with one of Gothenburg’s famous trams (hop off at Linnéplatsen or Botaniska Trädgården). For more information on getting there by public transportation check out www.vasttrafik.se/en/
The same procedure as previous years, follows Tune Of The Day festival Way Out West, which takes place in Gothenburg. For about a week we focus entirely on this festival and the artists who play here. Will publish pictures of the construction, area, the live shows and a few other crazy things! Information about the festival and of course lots of music in a mixed bag.
First up among a long list of artists, Billy Bragg, an English alternative rock musician and left-wing activist. His music blends elements of folk music, punk rock and protest songs, and his lyrics mostly deal with political or romantic themes. His music career has lasted more than 30 years.
Protest more often and more passionately is a motto that Billy Bragg would certainly sign in blood. Left of Mao with a passion that exemplifies lust for life, Bragg has been one of England’s most important artists since the late '70s, and whose impressive thirty plus year carrier has survived literally thousands upon thousands of passing trends. His influence, both politically and musically, on a generation of musicians is hard to deny even if you wanted to. A manifestation of this is the highly acclaimed collaboration between Wilco and Bragg in which they recorded previously unreleased songs of Woody Guthrie.
Billy Bragg plays at Flamingo Stage fri at 15:10 (If we are lucky as he steps up during Wilco performance later that evening.)
Todays tune "Way Over Yonder In The Minor Key" is taken from the album Mermaid Avenue is a 1998 album of previously unheard lyrics written by Woody Guthrie, put to music written and performed by Billy Bragg and Wilco.
First Video is with Billy.
Second video is the song with Wilco, sound only.
