Feistodon - Black Tongue

We are not the only ones fascinated – rewind to Feist’s arrival in Stockholm a few years ago. Cirkus was full and the excited murmur was replaced with devotional silence as the lights were dimmed. When she, rather inconspicuously, took to the stage her presence created a certain gravitation, a subtle but unmistakable attraction. Equipped with only a guitar, a band and a pair of purple tights, she mesmerized the crowd; troubled souls filled with the presence and everyone was elated.

This is what Feist does: lifts spirits. Though upon listening to the new album Metals it is easy to wonder if she is still involved in such endeavors. Indeed, things are not the same cappuccino-color as the breakthrough The Reminder occasionally was. On Metals the often melancholy, and at times rather dark texts are contrasted by Feist’s comforting voice, though even this has suddenly become more angular, raspy and awkward. The irony may be that it was the hype around the The Reminder that has given Metals its more rebellious tone. The Reminder turned an indie scene secret to a chart-topping phenomenon that resulted in a whirlwind of tours, TV commercials, Sesame Street appearances and even more tours. Burnout was inevitable and when everything was over Feist learned to enjoy silence and didn’t touch her guitar for 18 months.

Eventually inspiration returned, though this time with a newfound sense of rebellion. Feist locked herself in a barn in California's Big Sur to record and creativity stormed like the Pacific Coast weather. The paradox here is that her desire to risk a winning concept has made her music, artistry and charisma more addictive than ever. There is a lot happening on Metals, and we have learned to expect nothing less of Feist live. This August Feist will guest Way Out West and those that come to Slottsskogen can be sure of one thing: it will be Feist that makes them curious again.

Leslie Feist (born 13 February 1976), known professionally as Feist, is a Canadian singer-songwriter, performing both as a solo artist and as a member of the indie rock group Broken Social Scene.
