Steven Wilson - Song Of I

"Song Of I" is the most electronically textured piece on the album "To The Bone", Steven Wilson and German singer Sophie Hunger make obsessive vows to each other. To underscore the unsettling nature of this relationship—one of addiction—electronic treatments hiss and groan over the snap of a clapper-board beat. As if to suggest that the pull these two have on each other has a deadly magnetic vortex, the middle eight consists of a frenzied orchestra playing on top of barbed guitar chords.

It’s a song about obsession. What’s nice about it is that on the surface you wouldn’t know if it’s a sinister song or a love song, though the music kind of tells you that it’s the former.

The gist of the song is, “I’ll give up anything—I’ll give us smoking, I’ll give up alcohol, I’ll give up gambling, I give up staying out all night…but the one thing I will never give up is you.” That could be taken as a very romantic sentiment, but it could also be a very creepy one depending on the context. I imagined it as a boy and girl singing together originally, obsession certainly isn’t gender specific.

“My fifth record is in many ways inspired by the hugely ambitious progressive pop records that I loved in my youth (think Peter Gabriel’s So, Kate Bush’s Hounds of Love, Talk Talk’s Colour of Spring and Tears for Fears’ Seeds of Love).

Lyrically, the album’s eleven tracks veer from the paranoid chaos of the current era in which truth can apparently be a flexible notion, observations of the everyday lives of refugees, terrorists and religious fundamentalists, and a welcome shot of some of the most joyous wide-eyed escapism I’ve created in my career so far. Something for all the family!”– Steven Wilson

The tune is taken from the fifth studio album "To The Bone" by English recording artist Steven Wilson, released on 18 August 2017 on Caroline International. It became Wilson's highest-charting album ever, reaching number 3 in the UK Albums Chart and the US Billboard Independent Albums chart. Steven John Wilson (born 3 November 1967) is an English musician, singer, songwriter and record producer, most closely associated with the progressive rock genre. Currently a solo artist, he became known as the founder, lead guitarist, lead vocalist and songwriter of the band PORCUPINE TREE, as well as being a member of several other bands.

Wilson will release his highly anticipated sixth solo album "The Future Bites" on 29th January 2021. An album that we will come back to when the time comes.

So enjoy this piece with Sophie Hunger.

Opeth - Cusp Of Eternity

A new week, which means that we will present this week's "Record of the Week".

Pale Communion, the 11th full-length release for the Swedish progressive rock/metal band "Opeth", the album was produced by bandleader Mikael Åkerfeldt and mixed by Porcupine Tree's Steven Wilson.

The Swedes follows up the previous and surprising genre twist 2011's "Heritage" with the new Opeth effort, Pale Communion. The band continues on with the progressive path they made on "Heritage". The production is more expansive than before and the songs have more affinity and do not sprawl as much as it did on the last album. However, I hear more classical references now, bands like Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Genesis etc. appearing in the background.

The musicians are doing a fantastic job on Pale Communion, The most notable is Martin Axenrot who makes a huge impact on this record, he plays neat, stylish and this is probably the most well-filled drumming I've heard him do. Martin Mendez support Martin well and creates a perfect rhythm section. Joakim Svalberg on keys must really have fun on this record as he gets a lot of air and can jam freely. Åkerfeldt signs good, really good and handle his guitar excellent and his guitar partner Fredrik Åkesson handles the guitar just like that he could not do anything else, splendid in other words.

Pale Communion does really fill me up with exciting moments and keeps my interest flowing. The compositions are magnificence and full of dynamics and contrast. The sound on the Vinyl is amazing, a hell of  good pressing and It's a thrill and enjoyment to play this and I do enjoy playing this from the start to finish.

Mikael Åkerfeldt said of the album, "I wanted to do something more melodic with this album, so there's stronger vocal melodies and more melodies overall for this album." .

Storm Corrosion - Drag Ropes

Opeth frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt‘s collaboration with Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree)have done a record that will be released on the 7th of May.

The long awaited collaboration between Mikael Akerfeldt and Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree) is finally being completed. The project goes under the name of "Storm Corrosion" and will have a self-titled record. This album could be seen as the final part in the odd trilogy of records completed by “Heritage” and Steven Wilson‘s brand new solo album “Grace for Drowning“

 Wilson said of the project:
“Because I think we both had this idea of this kind of music that we knew we couldn’t get our bands to play, but that we both kind of understood where we were coming from. ‘Cause we have this kind of passion: very experimental, obscure records, almost orchestral in their scope. And we wanted to make a record like that for a long time. It’s a long way from metal and it’s a long way from anything that, I think, Mikael has ever done, including [Opeth’s] Damnation record. I think a lot of people thought, ‘Oh, it’s gonna be like Damnation.’ It’s not; it’s a long way from that, too. And it’s actually a long way from anything I’ve done…The one thing we didn’t wanna do is get together and do a prog-metal supergroup, which would have been so easy to do — and kind of expected, in a way. And, you know, we might do that anyway one day. But this time around, we thought, ‘Let’s just do this record.’ Some people will love it and some people will not, and that’s OK, because, in a way, I don’t think we wanted to just give what was expected, and we’re certainly not doing that".

This tune goes (in my mind) in the same genre as Opeth last album.
Its a quite dark video to it...Strong but thoughtful.

More info @ Homesite.

I will not write that much today as I worked 18 hrs yesterday...
with Judas Priest and Hammerfall, we will write about that gig another day.

Enjoy Folks!

Love, Thetania
