Ian Gillan - Gethsemane

Sunday, classics time, today we continue in the musical theme, although we put more edgy touch to the song.

Original version of this all time musical classic. Deep Purple’s Ian Gillan played the role of Jesus and his interpretation of this immortal cut defined all the upcoming ones. When this work was recorded, Deep Purple weas on the top of the musical world, so Ian was unable to join the plays in Broadway, nor film the 1973 movie. Ted Neeley replaced him, he did awesome and was the known face of this Jesus, but that was his only achievement. Ian Gillan is part of rock history and his name is written with golden letters on the bible of rock.

The Musical, or should we say the rock opera "Jesus Christ Superstar" is made by Andrew Lloyd Webber with lyrics by Tim Rice. The musical started as a rock opera concept recording before its first staging on Broadway in 1971. The musical is based very loosely on the Gospels' accounts of the last week of Jesus' life, beginning with the preparation for the arrival of Jesus and his disciples in Jerusalem and ending with the crucifixion. It highlights political and interpersonal struggles between Judas Iscariot and Jesus, struggles that are not in the Bible. The resurrection is not included. It therefore largely follows the form of a traditional passion play.

Todays tune "Gethsemane" taken from the rock opera "Jesus Christ Superstar", Ted Neeley's 1973 version but with the voice of Ian Gillan. Holy moses, what a version!

As a bonus we have a version with Peter Jöback, Live from Cirkus" 2004.

Another bonus, Peter Jöback - I love musicals - Gethsemane Live from Globen, Stockholm 20.10.2012, poor video, but you can still hear that Peter's version is pretty awsome.

Peter Jöback - Losing My Mind

I Love Musicals is an elegant tribute to the musical where Peter Jöback together international guest soloists from Broadway and the West End, Stockholm Sinfonietta under the direction of British conductor David White takes its audience on their most loved songs from musicals like "Kristina från Duvemåla", "Phantom of the Opera", "Miss Saigon", "Cabaret", "Les Miserables", "Jesus Christ Superstar" and others. For six performances around Sweden, I was involved in building the Musical, I can say that I'm a freak of Musical, doubt that i would go, if I could get the chance to see an Musical just like that, but have to admit that during this concept it becomes quite powerful, because here you get actually the best of all the major musicals and Peter does this incredibly well.

Guest Soloists are:

Musical superstar Michael McCarthy is an amazing barython singer and he has successfully played "Inspector Javert" in "Les Miserables" in the United States, China, Australia and Europe and is one of Cameron Macintosh's Absolute favorites in the role. Besides musical roles are Michael demand on the concert stage where he was involved in a tribute concert to Ira Gershwin, made their own solo tours, and in 2008 he stood at the Gothenburg Opera scene in the concert version of "Sweeney Todd".

The British soprano Katy Treharne who played "Christine" against Peter in "The Phantom of the Opera" is one of England's foremost sopranos and has appeared in many musicals and concerts for example in "Perchance to Dream", the 25th anniversary of "The Phantom of the Opera" at the Royal Albert Hall and "Maisy Day" in Brian Irvine's "The Calling of Maisy Dayerts".

The Canadian singer and musical star Ma-Anne Dionisio, who has been praised for her role as "Kim" in "Miss Saigon" on stages around the world, played with Peter in "Miss Saigon" at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in London 1997th

In Linköping and Malmö will James Graeme to replace Michael. James Graeme has had the lead role in numerous musicals as "Jesus Christ Superstar", "Out of the Blue", "Cats", "Romeo & Juliet" and others. James has also been involved in various sets in Sweden including the scenes in Stockholm and Gothenburg.

I Love Musicals directed by acclaimed Edward af Sillen who successfully worked with among others Tomas Ledin critically acclaimed dinner show Showtime, Melodifestivalen, many theater and television productions such as Hair at Stockholm City Theatre and Parliament in the TV 4. Englishman David White will direct the 35-man strong Sinfonietta. He is one of the musical scene most prolific conductors.

Before the show I Love Musicals appears Peter Jöback film La vie, l'amour, la mort the arena. The film will be shown on screens at the scene, starting 45 minutes before the concert begins. La vie, l'amour, la mort is a tribute to the music, France, and film. It is a musical dramatic tale of Peter French alter ego of his life, living and dead, with inspiration from French chansons. Director Magnus Renfors.

The concert lasts about 2.5 hours including intermission.

Peter Jöback has established himself as one of the most prolific and respected Swedish artists – an extraordinary performer with an amazing voice. A platinum selling recording artist combined with extensive performances on stage and TV in Scandinavia and London’s West End, Peter Jöback is also a highly regarded name internationally. Always seeking new challenges, Peter has moved successfully between musical genres on stage and on record with creative force and courage.

Peter has starred in productions of several of the world's most widely seen musicals. After being awarded a Swedish Tony award for creating Robert in Bjorn Ulvaeus' and Benny Andersson's (ABBA) original musical "Kristina", Peter was brought to London's West End by Sir Cameron Mackintosh to play Chris in "Miss Saigon" and later for the role of Michael in the original cast of "The Witches of Eastwick". He has also starred as the MC in "Cabaret" in Copenhagen and in Sweden, for which he received his second Swedish Tony award.

Over the course of his career, Peter has sold over 1 million albums, including the top selling Swedish albums of both 2006 and 2008, and he has been nominated for three Swedish Grammy awards. Additionally, two of Peter's TV specials have been nominated fo rthe Silver Rose at the Rose d'Or Global Entertainment Television Festival in Montreux. In June 2010, Peter was honored to be one of the select few artists to perform at the concert for the Royal wedding of Swedish Crown Princess Victoria.

In addition to the busy year in Sweden, Peter was invited to perform at the 25th anniversary celebration of "The Phantom of the Opera" at London's Royal Albert hall, where he was introduced as the next Phantom. Peter was thrilled to be back in the West End and felt honored to play the part of The Phantom in this classical musical at its original theatre. For the following six months Peter got standing ovations every night for his role interpretation as the Phantom.

After playing his dream role as the Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty's Theatre in London, Peter returned to Scandinavia for an exclusive musical tour “I Love Musicals”.

For the sixth year in a row The Show of Christmas takes place in the Globe. This year's artists was Peter Jöback, Lisa Nilsson, Sarah Dawn Finer, Eric Gadd, September, Veronica Maggio, Cotton Club & Richard Häger, Master of Ceremonies was Mark Levengood.

Mark is very funny and we had a lot of laughs.

My choise of todays tune , Sarah Dawn Finer.

Sarah begun her career with singing backing vocals to different Swedish artists.
2005 she released her fist ep then 2007 she released her first album, "A Finer Dawn". Her latest album was Winterland that was released 2010.
Sarah is born in Stockholm, her mom comes from America, both her sister and brother is in the music business. Her voice and appearance is extremely beautiful its like she have a sparkling light surrounding her.

In the end of the show we took a quick break before loading out, I had a phone call that our daughter swallowed a little glass ball, hm.... then Peter Jöback told me that he swallowed one too when he was a child and it went all good. Ahh good thank u for that, I was a bit worried :)

Ladys and Gents, This is Sarah Dawn Finer!

Love, Thetania

Found an 2004 video with both Peter Jöback och Sarah Dawn Finer :)
