Matt Berry - Like Stone (Moon Duo Remix)

Nature abhors a vacuum. The dust hadn’t even settled on Matt Berry’s acclaimed 2020 album Phantom Birds and yet he was already hatching plans for a follow up. More accurately, he’d recorded most of "The Blue Elephant" before "Phantom Birds" had even been released.

“When I was having to talk about "Phantom Birds" to people my mind was already on the next album which was half finished,” recalls Berry. “I wanted this album to be a reaction to the last. With "Phantom Birds" I’d stripped everything back to basics and put my voice very much to the front. It was a song-driven endeavor with very little coming out of the speakers. With The Blue Elephant I was eager to go in the opposite direction.”

On records such as 2018’s tremendous "Television Themes", Berry has shown his skill for drilling down into one idea over the course of an album but "The Blue Elephant" is perhaps the first time he’s pulled all of the different strands from across his recording careers into one record. Perhaps not coincidentally, the release also marks ten years since he signed to Acid Jazz and began the diverse career that has continually run parallel with his acting and writing.

From rerecording 70s television themes to a pared-back Dylan-styled set of confessionals to this – arguably the culmination of all his recording work to date – trusting Matt Berry to follow whatever direction he fancies is a policy that has paid off in spades.

Following the acclaim of Matt Berry’s eighth studio album "The Blue Elephant", on 18th June Acid Jazz will release a remix by San Franciscan psychedelic outfit, MOON DUO.

In keeping with "The Blue Elephant" disorientation, MOON DUO have crafted a remix of one of the album’s standout tracks, "Like Stone" (“a cosmic jazz scorcher” – The Times). Slowing the original track down, the duo has applied their distinctive brand of west coast psych, making it the perfect accompaniment to a spaced-out and trippy summer day.

Today's tune "Like Stone" is taken from the album the "The Blue Elephant", which is rooted in psychedelia. Featuring a breadth of styles and musical ideas throughout, it takes the listener on a dizzying trip through an idiosyncratically British love of Psych, Freakbeat, Acid Rock and late ‘60s pop, enjoy!

The Open Mind - Magic Potion

Sunday, time for a classic!

THE OPEN MIND, is a British Freakbeat/Psych band from London are probably most noted for the now legendary track Magic Potion which appeared as a single and later on their much sought after debut album on Philips in 1969. Fortunately this album was re-released on Antar (ANTAR 2) in 1986 and this has made this classic piece of 60s Freakbeat much more accessible to collectors of 60s psychedelia.

The band was formed in the mid 1960s by four musicians from Putney, South London. Initially named The Apaches formed by Tim du Feu, Mike Brancaccio and Philip Fox and their friend Ray Nye. Nye left in 1965 and another friend, Terry Schindler, joined instead. The band became The DRAG SET, who released a little-known single in February 1967, "Day and Night" / "Get Out of My Way". Shortly thereafter, they changed their name to THE OPEN MIND and in July 1969 released a self-titled LP which has since become a highly sought-after collectible. The band, however, is best known for its druggy August 1969 single, "Magic Potion", which did not appear on the album.

THE OPEN MIND disbanded in 1973; its members wanted to move into jazz-influenced music, but THE OPEN MIND was too well known as a psychedelic band. The band members (minus Phil Fox) went on to form ARMADA, which lasted about three years but did not release any recorded material.

Despite their paucity of recorded material, THE OPEN MIND have proven to be influential in the psychedelic rock genre, their single "Magic Potion" having been covered by bands such as THE SEERS and SUN DIAL.

Today's tune "Magic Potion" is taken from the single (7") with the same name, enjoy a trippy piece!
