The Budos Band - Long In The Tooth

Saturday, time to get groovy together with a New York-based doom rock Afro-soul big band with a '70s touch, yes it's THE BUDOS BAND.

Celebrating 15 years from the release of their debut album, Daptone's Royal Court from Staten Island delivers a truly epic collection of new material that finds the group further bridging the gap between the Farfisa-fueled Ethio-Funk stylings of their early recordings, with the psychedelic, SABBATH-inspired hellfire of late.

“In some ways, it’s reminiscent of our first two albums "The Budos Band" and "Budos II",” says Tom Brenneck. “We branched off on "Burnt Offering" and "V". Now, we’re still moving forward. You can play these songs on the dance-floor. We knew the horns had to stand out too. Thinking about hip-hop allowed us to put the bounce back into The Budos.”

This is evident from needle drop to final rotation. Heavy drum breaks, reminiscent of the B-Boy approved grooves of their early output reign supreme, setting the stage for the pulsating, hallucinatory wall of organ, menacing horns, and rugged guitar riffs to permeate your soul - leaving the listener in a rhythmic wash of Budonian rapture.

Jared Tankel – baritone saxophone
Thomas Brenneck – electric guitar
John Carbonella Jr. – congas, drums
Mike Deller – organ
Daniel Foder – bass guitar
Andrew Greene – trumpet
Rob Lombardo – bongos, congas
Brian Profilio – drums
Dame Rodriguez – percussion

Over the course of their nearly decade and a half long career, the 60’s/70’s influenced afro-soul instrumental band’s thunderous and eclectic sound has known no bounds. "Long In The Tooth" is a collection of expertly crafted energizing guitar licks, syncopated percussion precision, vigorous horns, and validates that the band is in its most monumental form to date

Today's tune "Long In The Tooth" is the title tune from their latest album that represents the culmination of a 15-year journey by a band that has consistently carved its own distinct path through the grooves of history.

"Long In The Tooth" was released October 9, 2020, enjoy!

The Budos Band - Burnt Offering

THE BUDOS BAND, the Staten Island instrumental afro-soul act with influences as the CAIRO JAZZ BAND, J.C. Davis, Mulatu Astatke and BLACK SABBATH coming together to form a mind-bending combination of rhythm and melody, record junkies like me nodding their heads to the soul-infused melodies; metal heads thrashing to the dark and ominous guitar and bass riffs.

THE BUDOS BAND is an instrumental band recording on the Daptone Records label. The band has nine members (with occasional guests) who on their first studio albums, played instrumental music that was self-described as "Afro-Soul", baritone saxophone player Jared Tankel elucidated as being drawn from Ethiopian music the band had been listening to that had a soul undercurrent to it, which the band then "sprinkled a little bit of sweet 60's stuff on top" of. Since this time, the band has moved toward playing what they refer to as "70's Psychedelic Instrumental Music."

On the electric guitar is Thomas Brenneck, congas, drums is handled by John Carbonella Jr., organ - Mike Deller, bass guitar - Daniel Fode, trumpet, Andrew Greene, bongos, congas – Rob Lombardo, drums – Brian Profilio and percussion – Dame Rodriguez,

Jazz, deep funk, Afro-beat, soul and heavy-metal influences can be heard in the Budos Band recordings, all of which were released on Daptone Records and recorded at the label's own studio, Daptone's House of Soul, in Brooklyn, New York. Though they reside in Brooklyn THE BUDOS BAND have toured most of North America, Several countries in Europe and parts of Australia.

That this is very cool music to play on high volume on a Friday evening, but beware, it's easy to get the "Budos Fever"

Today's tune is the title tune from "Burnt Offering", released 2014, enjoy!
