Tom Waits - Earth Died Screaming

Sunday, time for a classic.

"Earth Died Screaming" is a tune by Tom Waits, who is renowned for his frequently bizarre, otherworldly instrumentation. Engineer Tchaid Blake recalled the recording of this song to Uncut: "He wanted the sound of wood he'd heard on old Smithsonian records. He knew exactly the sound he wanted. We ended up outside with about seven or eight people surrounding Tom on their knees banging two-by-fours against stones or wood on the ground. Wonderful! They're credited as playing 'Sticks' on the record."

The song is featured in the 1995 movie 12 Monkeys.

"Earth Died Screaming" is taken from the tenth studio album "Bone Machine" by Tom Waits, released in 1992 on Island Records. It won a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album, and features guest appearances by LOS LOBOS' David Hidalgo, PRIMUS' Les Claypool and Brain, and THE ROLLING STONES' Keith Richards.

"Bone Machine" marked a return to studio material for Waits, coming a full five years after his previous studio album, Franks Wild Years (1987). The album is often noted for its dark lyrical themes of death and murder, and for its rough, stripped-down, percussion-heavy blues rock style.
