Nazareth - Hair of the Dog

Sunday, time for a classic.

"Hair of the Dog" is the title track of NAZARETHs 1975 album "Hair of the Dog". It is sometimes called "Son of a Bitch" because of the repeated lyric in the hook ("Now you're messing with a son of a bitch"). The song is about a charming and manipulative woman who can get men to acquiesce to her every need. The singer is letting her know that she has met her match in him, a self-described "son of a bitch."

"Hair of the Dog" uses a talk box extensively during its bridge. The song's title, which does not appear in the lyrics, is a pun ("hair of the dog" = "heir of the dog" = "son of a bitch"). The Girls Aloud song "Sexy! No No No..." features a sped-up sample of the song's guitar riff. The band is given a writing credit for the sample.

As a standalone song, it only charted in Germany, where it peaked at #44. In the United States, because the "Hair of the Dog" album was a top-20 hit on the album charts, the song received extensive airplay on album-oriented rock stations (despite "bitch" being a borderline profanity) and remains in the playlist of most classic rock formatted stations. In the USA, it was released as the B-Side of Love Hurts.

The song has been covered by many bands. GUNS N' ROSES recorded it on their 1993 album "The Spaghetti Incident?". This version features the signature guitar riff from THE BEATLES "Day Tripper" as a gag at the end. The song is on the BRITNEY FOX album "Boys in Heat". STONE RIDER covered the song on their 2008 album "Three Legs of Trouble". It has also been covered by PAUL DI'ANNO, THE MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP, and WARRANT.

The original version of the song is featured in the video game Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost and Damned. The song was also used in The CW show Supernatural in a Season 2 promotional advertisement.

Enjoy today's tune where the video were NAZARETH performing their classic from Euro TV "Spotlight" circa 1976.

Clutch - Gimme the Keys

Maryland rockers CLUTCH are tentatively set to release their new album, "Book Of Bad Decisions", in September 7. The album was recently completed at Sputnik Sound studio in Nashville, Tennessee with producer and engineer Vance Powell (THE WHITE STRIPES, RED FANG).

CLUTCH have released the first taste from the album "Gimme the Keys", see the lyric video below.

Here's the story behind "Gimme the Keys".

The song is about the band's first tour back in 1991, a time where they began to cut their teeth in the live music business, dealt with show cancellations and incidents on the road. One particular show in a shed surrounded by cornfields in Lawrence, Kansas ultimately turned ugly over a missing microphone and accusations brought by drunk and gun-toting security people at the end of a long day. "Gimme the keys they can keep the guarantee | Gimme the keys and get the hell out of dodge" is a reflection of the mood of that night.

Today's tune "Gimme the Keys LV", taken from the upcoming album "Book of Bad Decisions", enjoy!

Witchery - True North

"True North" was the first single from the latest album "I Am Legion" by the Swedish blackened Thrash Metallers WITCHERY. A video was made, see it below, produced by Niklas Sundin / Cabin fever media.

As with the previous album, "I Am Legion" was created in the WITCHERY line-up consisting of Angus Norder (Vocals), Jensen (Guitar), Rickard Rimfält (Lead Guitar), Sharlee D'Angelo (Bass) and Chris Barkensjö (Drums). The album was also produced and mixed by Daniel Bergstrand at Dugout Studios (BEHEMOTH, IN FLAMES, MESHUGGAH) and comes packaged in powerful artwork by Andreas Diaz Pettersson.

WITCHERY guitarist Jensen checked in with a comment about the upcoming album as follows:

"The first few days after the release of "Nosferatu" (the first single from 2016's "In His Infernal Majesty's Service" album) I was quite taken aback. There had been so many years between the releases of "Don't Fear The Reaper" and "Witchkrieg" (4 years) and then an additional 6 more years between "Witchkrieg" and "In His Infernal Majesty's Service" that I hardly thought anyone remembered WITCHERY anymore...

We got our s*** together for "IHIMS" in order to celebrate the band's 20th anniversary. We wrote new songs and got a few new members so we could make the album happen and have it released in 2016. But that was the goal; to merely celebrate the band's 20 years of existence. Then, after "Nosferatu" was released, this massive wave of appreciation started to surface. When the full album dropped in November 2016 we experienced a surge of positive feedback on the rest of the album as well. I mean, we all loved the album and knew it was good, but we were thrilled to see that also other people heard what we heard; that it was a great album and that this line-up had both the chops and riffs needed, displaying them with an enthusiasm and bravado perhaps not seen since maybe the early days of the band's existence!

Those of you who saw us play at Wacken a few weeks ago got to hear the world premiere of the song "True North", which will be the first single from the new album. We are very excited about "I Am Legion" and we hope this release shows that WITCHERY, albeit after 20 years of existence, isn't going to fade away. On the contrary, WITCHERY is more likely entering the most productive phase yet in the band's career!"

Jensen continued by adding the following comment about the album's first single:

""True North" is somewhat of a different song compared to what WITCHERY usually puts out. Maybe that's why we made it the first song on the new album? Regardless, it's a song that we in the band all really like and that most likely will become a regular in our live set."

Today's tune "True North" taken from the latest album "I Am Legion" released, Nov 10th 2017, enjoy!
