Clutch - Book of Bad Decisions

Monday, time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

"Book of Bad Decisions" CLUTCH’s 12th studio album that had a worldwide release on September 7th, 2018 via their own Weathermaker Music label. The album was recorded at Sputnik Sound in Nashville, TN by producer Vance Powell (Jack White, Chris Stapleton, THE RACONTEURS, THE DEAD WEATHER) and consists of 15 tracks that run at 56 mins. The album cover was designed by renowned photographer Dan Winters

CLUTCH is one of the best rock acts of the modern era that refuses to follow the mainstream industry or fall back into some retro act, they just play some simple real rock.

"Book of Bad Decisions" is a brilliant follow up to 2015's "Psychic Warfare", it's wise and deliberate, stylish and freaky and funny, that will make you fiddle after the "repeat" button. Fallon's lyrics are amazing, I wonder what's going on in his head when it comes down to write a tune and how the hell does he explain his ideas to his wingman's and the tightest band he could ever work with, guitarist Tim Sult, bassist Dan Maines, and drummer Jean-Paul Gaster.

The album is filled up with heavy rocket-fuelled blues and weaponized boogie funk and it kicks off with a real firestarter of "Gimme The Keys" that follows up by the boogaloo of "Spirit Of ’76", to the hard-charging riffs in "How To Shake Hands", after that comes "In Walks Barbarella" that will stun you with it crazy and freak out lyrics, apparently, not everything has to be serious. Some classic in the Rock n' roller "Vision Quest" to the groovy "Weird Times" and the powerful "Emily Dickenson", the straightforward old-school kitchen crab cakes bluegrass of "Hot Bottom Feeder" to the closing winding tongues of "Lorelei".

Sum: Another superb release from Maryland's finest.

Today's tune is the recipe for Marylands crab cakes "Hot Bottom Feeder" is taken from "Book of Bad Decisions", enjoy!

Dire Straits - Sultans Of Swing

Sunday, time for a classic!

"Sultans of Swing" is a song by British rock band DIRE STRAITS from their eponymous debut album, which band frontman Mark Knopfler wrote and composed. Although it was first released in 1978, it was its 1979 re-release that caused it to become a hit in both the UK and U.S.

The song was recorded at Pathway Studios, North London, in July 1977 and quickly acquired a following after it was put on rotation at Radio London. Its popularity soon reached record executives, and DIRE STRAITS were offered a contract with Phonogram Records. The song was then re-recorded in February 1978 at Basing Street Studios for the band's debut album. The record company wanted a less-polished rock sound for the radio, so an alternative version was recorded at Pathway Studios in April 1978 and released as the single in some countries including the United Kingdom and Germany.

The music for "Sultans of Swing" was composed by Mark Knopfler on a National Steel guitar in an open tuning, though Knopfler did not think very highly of it at first. As he remembered, "I thought it was dull, but as soon as I bought my first Strat in 1977, the whole thing changed, though the lyrics remained the same. It just came alive as soon as I played it on that ’61 Strat which remained my main guitar for many years and was basically the only thing I played on the first album and the new chord changes just presented themselves and fell into place."

The inspiration for the song came from witnessing a jazz band playing in the corner of a practically deserted pub in Deptford, South London. At the end of their performance, the lead singer announced that they were the "Sultans of Swing", and Knopfler found the contrast between the group's dowdy appearance and surroundings and their grandiose name amusing.

Today's tune "Sultans of Swing" is a fully-formed, blues-drenched tune that set the musically standard and trademark for the band. Today's version is Alchemy Live, Recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon in London on 22–23 July 1983. Enjoy!

All Them Witches - Diamond

By most bands’ fifth LP, the sound is pretty set. Parameters established. Refinement dissipated in favor of formulaic execution of what’s worked in the past and with the new single from the Nashville psych-rock experimentalists, ALL THEM WITCHES is sounding really promising.

In 2017, the Nashville four-piece offered what might’ve otherwise become their own template in their fourth album, "Sleeping Through The War". Their second for New West Records following 2015’s mellow-vibing "Dying Surfer Meets His Maker", Sleeping brought larger production value to dug-in heavy psych blues jamming with oversight from producer Dave Cobb (Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson). Good or bad, well I have learned to like it true time, even if the older one is more playable for my ears.

The new album is mixed by Rob Schnapf (Beck, Elliott Smith, Kurt Vile) and introducing keyboardist/percussionist Jonathan Draper to the fold with McLeod, bassist/vocalist Charles Michael Parks, Jr., and drummer/graphic artist Robby Staebler, the new eponymous record isn’t self-titled by mistake.

Today's tune "Diamond" is taken from the upcoming album "ATW", set to be released September 28. The Video is directed by Robby Staebler.

Additionally, the band has announced a US headlining tour, kicking off at the Desert Daze Music Festival in Perris, CA on October 12-14 where they will play alongside the likes of MY BLOODY VALENTINE, TAME IMPALA, KING GIZZARD AND THE LIZARD WIZARD.

Brian Wright - Accordion

Brian Wright is an American singer-songwriter from Waco, TX. His debut album, Dog Ears was released in 2006, quickly followed by a sophomore effort, Bluebird in 2007. After signing with Sugar Hill Records, Wright has recorded two more albums, 2011's "House on Fire" and 2013's "Rattle Their Chains".

For Brian Wright, life as a traveling troubadour began in Waco, Texas near the highway and the trains where he found music at the age of 13. That is where his father took a job that required a great deal of travel, making the family VW van Wright’s first crib. He started as a drummer but found the guitar more to his liking (though he can play almost any instrument with keys or strings). Wright spent several years playing in Austin and Dallas bars before moving to Los Angeles in 2002 with his drummer. There they formed the band "Brian Wright and the Waco Tragedies". Several different music styles later, Wright settled on an infusion of folk, country, and rock music while defying all three. The album Dog Ears, in 2006, was his first release, followed soon thereafter by the album Bluebird in 2007. The band began to develop quite a following. Consequently, Wright feels most at home when on the road, and this movement has helped shaped Wright’s sense of bare-boned lyrics and achingly beautiful songs that seem both distant and intimate at the same time.

Today's tune "Accordion" is taken from 2011's "House on Fire" album, enjoy!
