Mungo Jerry - In the Summertime

July, Monday, Summertime, time for Tune Of The Day to take some holiday. So no ”Record Of The Week” today or for the upcoming weeks. As it’s time to take some rest, spend some quality time with the family, do some travel between the works I obligated to do during this summer and I will have some time to go thru some dusty records and hopefully find some new ones.

Yes I will be back in a few weeks, so hang out, for the autumn will be full speed with the new charged batteries and a lot of great music to listen to, the pile of new records is huge already (:

So today’s tune will be a classic Summer tune by the British rock band MUNGO JERRY.

"In the Summertime" is the debut single by MUNGO JERRY. Written and composed by its lead singer, Ray Dorset, it celebrates the carefree days of summer. In 1970 it reached number one in charts around the world, including seven weeks in the UK Singles Chart, two weeks in one of the Canadian charts, and number three on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in the US. It is considered one of the best-selling singles of all time with an estimated 30 million copies sold.

The song took Dorset only ten minutes to write and compose, which he did using a second-hand Fender Stratocaster while he was taking time off work from his regular job, working in a lab for Timex. The song's lyric "have a drink, have a drive, go out and see what you can find" led to the song's somewhat ironic use in a UK advert for the campaign Drinking and Driving Wrecks Lives.

The initial UK release was on Dawn Records, a new label launched by Pye. It was unusual in that it was a maxi single, playing at 33-1/3 rpm, whereas singles generally played at 45 rpm. It included an additional song also written and composed by Dorset, "Mighty Man," on the A-side, and a much longer track, the Woody Guthrie song "Dust Pneumonia Blues," on the B-side. As the record was sold in a picture sleeve, also not standard at the time, and only sold at a few pence more than the normal 45 rpm two-track single, it was considered value for money. The small quantities of 45 rpm discs on the Pye record label, with "Mighty Man" on the B-side, and without a picture sleeve, were pressed for use in jukeboxes. These are now rare collectors items.

In 2012 Dorset sued Associated Music International, claiming over £2 million in royalties from the song that he believed had been withheld from him.

In an interview with Gary James, Dorset explained the origin of the "motorcycle" sound towards the end of the song: "I said, 'We'll just get a recording of a motorcycle, stick it on the end of the song and then re-edit the front and then put the front off to the motorcycle so it starts up again.' But I couldn't find a motorcycle. Howard Barry, the engineer had an old, well, it wasn't old then, a Triumph sports car, which he drove past the studio while Barry Marrit was holding the microphone. So, he got the stereo effects from left to right or right to left, whatever. And that was it.”

So have a nice holiday and a great summer, cya soon folks!

Procol Harum - Conquistador

Sunday, time for a classic!

Today’s tune "Conquistador" is a song by the British psychedelic rock band PROCOL HARUM. Written by Gary Brooker and Keith Reid, it originally appeared on the band's 1967 self-titled debut album. It was later released as a single from the band's 1972 live album Procol Harum Live In Concert with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. It is one of the band's most famous and popular songs and their third Top 40 hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 (after 1967's "A Whiter Shade of Pale" and "Homburg"), peaking at number 16.

The song is unusual in that the music was written before the lyrics; according to Reid, "99 out of 100 of those PROCOL HARUM songs were written the words first, and then were set to music." He explained that Brooker had written a piece of Spanish-flavored music before the band had officially formed, and Reid decided to write lyrics about a conquistador. In August 1971, PROCOL HARUM was invited to perform with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra in Edmonton, Alberta. "Conquistador" was added to the set with little time to spare, and the orchestra had no time to rehearse. Nonetheless, they began the concert with the song, and the concert was captured on the album Procol Harum Live In Concert with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, of which "Conquistador" was the lead single.

PROCOL HARUMs lyricist Keith Reid told us the story behind this song: "Gary Brooker and I, before we formed PROCOL HARUM, when we were just working together as songwriters and getting into it, we had this regular deal where he lived about 40 miles from London near the ocean, and I'd jump on a train once a week and go visit him. He'd have a bunch of my lyrics and he'd play me whatever he had been working on. This particular time, though, I'd got down there and he'd been working on a tune. He said, 'What does this sound like to you?' And I said, 'Oh, conquistador.' It had a little bit of a Spanish flavor to it. I went into another room and started writing the words there and then. 99 out of 100 of those Procol Harum songs were written the words first, and then were set to music. But that particular one, the words hadn't existed before he had the musical idea.”

Voodoo Circle - Trapped in Paradise

VOODOO CIRCLE is a German hard rock/heavy metal band founded in 2008, as a project of SILENT FORCE guitarist Alex Beyrodt (currently also playing with bands PRIMAL FEAR and SINNER) who had the idea to re-think his personal vision of music, making songs more based on his early influences, such as WHITESNAKE, Yngwie Malmsteen, DEEP PURPLE and RAINBOW.

After the debut album called Alex Beyrodt's VOODOO CIRCLE, the project became a collaborative band, composed of Alex Beyrodt together with vocalist David Readman (PINK CREAM 69), bassist Mat Sinner (Beyrodt's bandmate on bands PRIMAL FEAR, SINNER and SILENT FORCE), keyboardist Alessandro Del Vecchio (HARDLINE, also Beyrodt's bandmate on SILENT FORCE) and drummer Tim Husung. On 05 July 2016, it was announced that original vocalist David Readman was leaving the band to focus on other activities.

The band has gained some critical and commercial success with the 2011 album Broken Heart Syndrome. The last two VOODOO CIRCLE albums are More Than One Way Home released in 2013 and Whisky Fingers released in 2015.

Today’s tune "Trapped In Paradise" is taken from the album "Whisky Fingers", released on November 27th 2015.

Wolf Hoffmann - Night On Bald Mountain

ACCEPT guitarist Wolf Hoffmann has just released his second solo album, titled "Headbangers Symphony".

The official video for the song "Night On Bald Mountain" can be seen below.

Wolf Hoffmann has a passion. His life-long love and dedication to heavy metal music is documented in dozens of albums spanning four decades with his long time heavy metal band ACCEPT. But beyond heavy metal, Wolf has an incessant craving for the classics, yes, the ones written decades and centuries ago.

Classical music has always been an influence - albeit limited - on ACCEPT’s Teutonic approach to rock and heavy metal. However, it wasn’t until 1997 during a extended hiatus from ACCEPT, that Wolf Hoffmann finally had the chance to fully explore and fulfill this interest by recording his first astounding solo album "Classical", a record filled with his rock guitar driven interpretations of some of classical music’s most loved compositions.

Fast-forward to 2016… Wolf Hoffmann has once again taken time out from ACCEPT to complete the long awaited follow-up to "Classical". It’s truly a bold statement by a genuine musician who simply refused to rest on his laurels and continues to push and challenge himself. .

"I have always incorporated classical music in my songwriting with ACCEPT, especially with 'Metal Heart', but I constantly felt there was so much more that I could do and I did not want to overload ACCEPT or force it in any way," he said. "I always knew I could make a whole record of it and that's how the first record 'Classical' was born. Even today, fans tell me that they are still listening to it, that's why it is so fantastic now to do another one."

Today's tune "Night On Bald Mountain" is taken from "Headbangers Symphony", released on July 1st. "Night On Bald Mountain" by Russian composer Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky is a very dramatic dark song on the theme of a witches' Sabbath, a perfect fit for Wolf's "metal treatment."

Rival Sons - Hollow Bones

Monday, new week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week".

Long Beach four-piece rockers RIVAL SONS returns with their latest effort "Hollow Bones", after a two big years after their previous record "Great Western Valkyrie" in 2014, where the guys got a great success. The arenas are now bigger than before, they are selling more and now peoples knows who they are. Now they are out on tour with the mighty BLACK SABBATH.

"Hollow Bones" continues where their previous album ended and takes the next phase in their musical history. The album is fuzzy, bluesy with some real driving riffs and some real groovy melody tunes, all the ingredients it needs. The album opener and the lead single "Hollow Bones Pt.1" immediately sets the bar. The tune is linked with its counterpart "Hollow Bones Pt.2" that appears later in the record, it's syncs perfectly. "Tied Up" and "Thundering Voices" shows that these guys are really talents, Holy Moses what a tunes they are. Strong, touching and very powerful. The cover "Black Coffee" is a well done bluesy version of the original HUMBLE PIE tune. "Baby Boy" and "Pretty Face" are brilliant rockers, really colourful, bluesy, heavy and lovely. The band is are rocking very well on "Hollow Bones, but there are also some more silent moments like "Fade Out" and "All That I Want" that takes your soul and send it to heaven. You can hear that the influences are strong with hard rock's greatest, the tunes breaths SABBATH, LED ZEPPELIN and DEEP PURPLE in a great deal of these songs.

"Hollow Bones" was produced in Nashville’s LCS studios by long time collaborator Dave Cobb. With an impeccable work from the bassist Dave Beste and drummer Michael Miley that creates an combustible rhythms. Marvellous fuzzed out guitar and solos that will leave you on the floor begging for more from Mr Fuzzlord himself Scott Holiday and Jay Buchanan's voice, holy fucking shit, it's so raw and tender that you melts into a sandbag when he open up his mouth, absolute the best rock singer in this century. The band have really moved forward musically and lyrically. "Hollow Bones" is the next step in the bands musical carrier, it will bring them closer on the road to legendary status and with this album they take a massive leap. It is, quite simply, genius.

Sum: "Hollow Bones" is something you ABSOLUTELY need!

Today's tune is the title track from the album "Hollow Bones" (June 10th, 2016), the video also gives you the wonderful track "Tied Up". The video was recorded live in Amsterdam, The Netherlands at "De Melkweg - The Max", Date: 06-06-2016.

Deep Purple - Hard Lovin' Man

Sunday, time for a classic.

Yesterday did the classic band DEEP PURPLE visit Stockholm and Gröna Lund for the second time in 2 weeks, as on 14 June 2016, Ian Paice suffered a transient ischaemic attack, or mini stroke. This led to DEEP PURPLE cancelling two concerts planned in Sweden that week. He said after the incident that there was "no serious or permanent damage" and expected to return to performing in July. He added that the cancelled concerts were the first DEEP PURPLE performances of which he had forced the cancellation since his co-founding of the band in 1968. He returned to stage with DEEP PURPLE in Gothenburg on 1 July and 2 July in Stockholm, playing a full and unadjusted setlist with the band.

The show was great, even if you can hear that the guys are getting old they still can rock.

Two power chords kick off the album's closer, before Glover's bass provides the rhythmic intro. Blackmore's guitar is folded in, then Paice and Lord join in before the vocals start. Gillan lets loose on this track and Blackmore performs a few "pre-Eddie Van Halen" guitar histrionics during the final minute-and-a-half.

Jon Lord used both the Leslie speaker and a Marshall amplifier with his Hammond organ, therefore the organ sound varies a lot throughout the songs. (Example: "Living Wreck" – Leslie speaker, "Hard Lovin' Man" – Marshall amplifier). And now with Don Airey, Live he uses, the Hammond goes into two hot-rodded 122 Leslies and a Hughes and Kettner Puretone 100-watt amp driving a 4 x 12 cabinet.

Setlist:

Highway Star
Bloodsucker
Hard Lovin' Man
Strange Kind of Woman
Vincent Price
Contact Lost
Uncommon Man
The Well-Dressed Guitar
Lazy
Demon's Eye
Hell to Pay
Keyboard Solo (Don Airey ABBA Theme SOS,… more )
Perfect Strangers
Space Truckin'
Smoke on the Water

Encore:
Hush (Joe South cover)
Bass Solo (Roger Glover)
Black Night (Incl. guitar snippet of The Final Countdown)

Today's tune "Hard Lovin' Man", Live Concert at Montreux 2011, Switzerland. The tune is taken from the album "In Rock", 1970.

Rob Zombie - Medication For The Melancholy

Rob Zombie's have released a new video for the song "Medication For The Melancholy". The track is taken from his latest album "The Electric Warlock Acid Witch Satanic Orgy Celebration Dispenser".

"The Electric Warlock Acid Witch Satanic Orgy Celebration Dispenser" was released on April 29 via UMe/T-Boy Records.

Regarding his decision to keep the new album and songs short, Rob told Rolling Stone magazine:

"Whenever I go through records that I love and I listen to over and over and over, I go, 'Man, this record's short. That's why I loved it so much.' It's, like, thirty minutes, so I've listened to it nine thousand times, whereas you have other records where you go, 'Yeah, I know that record's great, but it's, like, seventy-five minutes long, or the tracks are, like, six minutes long.' Like, I'd go back and look at BEATLES records and go, like, 'These songs are like a minute-and-a-half long. They don't feel a minute-and-a-half long.' Even when… Later, on 'Magical Mystery Tour', I used to think, 'Oh, well, these songs are much longer.' But they're not really; they're still short songs, but they seem epic. I love long songs, but if you're gonna write a song that long, it's better be 'Freebird' or 'Stairway To Heaven' or something. It'd better be worth my time."

"The Electric Warlock Acid Witch Satanic Orgy Celebration Dispenser" was produced by Chris "Zeuss" Harris and features Zombie alongside guitarist John 5, bassist Piggy D and drummer Ginger Fish.

Today's tune "Medication For The Melancholy", the intense performance video is the fourth to be released from the brand new album, enjoy!

Def Leppard - Man Enough

DEF LEPPARD's Frank Gryner-directed video for the song "Man Enough" is the latest tune taken off the band's latest, self-titled studio album.

DEF LEPPARD guitarist Phil Collen told TeamRock about "Man Enough": "I had this bass riff floating around my head, and I wanted it to have a similar vibe to 'Billy Jean' by Michael Jackson — almost a disco vibe. I didn't know what it was going to be called, then I played it to Joe [Elliott, vocals]; we went to [drummer] Rick Allen's 50th birthday, and he said, 'Shit! I've got a great idea for this song! And it's called 'Are You Man Enough To Be My Girl'. People have said it reminds them of 'Another One Bites The Dust' by QUEEN. It has this dancey appeal. Our song 'All Night' was a bit like that, and 'Excitable' on 'Hysteria'. But I think this is the first time we've really made it work. It just fell into place, and I think that's because we didn’t restrict ourselves. Every song on the album's like that. It was, like, 'Fuck everybody. This album was done for us.' It wasn't a business venture. We really didn't care what anybody thought. We went to town on it; it was a lot of fun." "Def Leppard" was recorded in early 2015 at Elliott's studio in Dublin, Ireland. The disc marked the group's first new collection of material in seven years and eleventh official studio release.

DEF LEPPARD's highly anticipated U.S. summer tour kicks off in Boston, Massachusetts at the Xfinity Center on June 22 and wraps up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa at the U.S. Cellular Center on October 10. The Live Nation-promoted outing will storm through cities across all parts of the U.S. and Canada.
