Saturnalia Temple - Golachab

Saturday, time to get a be a little mysterious and get out on the never-ending journey to find the tree of life

Saturnalia Temple is a Draconian Magical prophecy that speaks through music. From strings, battery and chants echoes nothing but dedication and timeless traditions. As can be expected of this triumvirate, they again channel the Qliphoth, echoing from the sphere of Golachab, enhancing the impossible elixir. Black magic metal has gone too far. There is no redemption.

Todays tune "Golachab" is from the EP "Impossibilum" (2013) available through Ajna Offensive.

Lars Winnerbäck - Utkast Till Ett Brev

Between 17 October and 22 November where I on the road with Lars Winnerbäck, a journey in character of sound, my task during this trip was to hang the speakers and everything that goes with it. Very educative, lots of new, nerdy data is loaded into the data base, things you can take advantage of in future jobs, sounds is fun. And I can only thank my sound colleagues for that, thanks for a new experience guys. Also got to play tour dad for the entire crazy tour staff and the local staff who showed up at every town that would lend a helping hand to construct and tear of various items that was included in a touring production.

There's lots to tell, but then it would probably be a whole book ... haha. But there is a saying, what happens on tour stays on tour.

Anyway I will share some pictures, as they say a picture says more than thousands words and of course some music from the boss.

First a pile of Live pictures from the road

Here is a pile of the gang…

Moonspell - Night Eternal

At first, I thought I'd conclude the short series av Rebel Angel Ramblings that puts the Swedish darkness and the month November in focus with something more grey than black. I thought of Icelandic Sólstafir and their loomy, grey and very autumn-like music.
I even started a post that way.
Then I just completely changed my mind.
Do not know why, but I felt like more darkness would be appropriate.
And I also happend to listen to Portugese metallers MOONSPELL, with their one-off great album "Night Eternal".
It is very strange, as for example the follow up "Alpha Noir/Omega White" is...mediochre. At best.
But "Night Eternal" is a great album!
Weird.

So, there are two songs that holds the flag high from "Night Eternal", the loomy power ballad "Scorpion Flower" (with guest vocals from dutch Anneke van Giersbergen) and the title track. I've chosen the title track, as this was the first contact I had with this record, and it is a great way to conclude the series of November music that has been rolling once a week during this month.
The track hits hard, I think.

So, the band then.
  • Fernando Ribeiro  – vocals (1989–present)
  • Miguel Gaspar  – drums (1992–present)
  • Pedro Paixão  – keyboard, guitar (1993–present)
  • Ricardo Amorim  – guitar (1995–present)
  • Aires Pereira  – bass (2007–present)

Personally, the thing I like the most with the song (and the record) is the vocals combined with the feeling the guitars and the keyboards create. It is almost a bit scary, but still with that quality that drags the listener in and keep them there.
A great song, a great way to finish this suite of posts from Chief Rebel Angel, with music that really fits the Swedish darkness. Even if it is from Portugal...

Honky - WFO

When you think of Texas, what comes to mind? Big skies? Big trucks? Big Guys? Big Hamburgers? Hot women with big… uh, well… big hair? Everything, as they say, is bigger in Texas… And that what ain’t bigger is more bizarre. After all, in a state that refers to itself as a republic… things can get pretty skewed.

Honky is a Austin Superboogie trio that was founded in 1996 by long time Butthole Surfer, part time Melvins bassist JD Pinkus,Bobby Ed Landgraf (DOWN,Gahdzilla Motor Company, Blowfly) on guitar , and rounded out by Michael "Night Train" Brueggen (Blackula, Syrup, Supagroup) on them skins.

Honky playes a lo-fi boogie, hi-sleaze dirty red-headed rock with heavy riff that reminds of ZZ Top

Todays tune "WFO" is a single taken off of the album 421. The album is co-written and co-produced by Pinkus and Landgraf at Willie Nelson’s famed Pedernales studio and mixed by Butthole Surfer Paul Leary (U2, Meat Puppets, Sublime) with mastering duties being handled by Brian “BIG BASS” Gardner ( Micheal Jackson, NWA, Eminem, the Band, Alice Cooper).

Van Halen - Unchained

Meine Damen und Herren, Spader's here again and this is the next to last entry in my odyssey
of rock bands that used to matter to me more than they do nowadays, or something like that anyway.

The first time I heard Van Halen, was down in the basement room of my friend Basse’s. As usual, it was a party and out of the speakers came this eruptive guitar piece called “Eruption” closely followed by “You Really Got Me”. Touchdown! Man those songs hit me hard. This was also a time when we started working out in the small homebuilt gym that Basse had in his basement too, and those two songs, in that particular order became the opening tracks of all my training cassettes for quite a long time.

The albums with David Lee Roth made a huge impact, from the first album up to 1984 it was all dandy and good and it peaked when I got to see them at the Monsters Of Rock tour at Råsunda in 1984, together with Mötley Crue and Ac/Dc. Imagine the shock when the word got out later on (about a week after the show) that David was leaving the band.
And his replacement is announced, Sammy Hagar, who was and is another artist that I have liked quite a bit both before, during and after his years with Van Halen. But somehow a bit of the magic was gone and it was enough to bring the band down from their pedestal.

I think it was a bunch of coinciding things that occurred to make that. The persona of Diamond Dave gone and a new, more modern sound. The fact that I liked Sammy and that the kept on churning out decent hits should have been a success factor for my continuously obsession of the band. But it wasn’t. I kept liking them, I kept buying the records (or at least the following two).
When they released Van Halen III, my interest in the band was completely gone and so was the band itself more or less.

Then in 2012 the story of Van Halen took yet another turn, as David Lee Roth was back behind mike and they released their latest album “A Different Kind Of Truth”.  This could have been a full reunion album, but somehow Alex van Halen rather had his son playing the bass than Michael Anthony.
So, how did this affect my declining interest of the band?
Not a bit. For the magic to return, this would have had to be a killer album without an of the BS that have surrounded the band lately. And it simply wasn’t. Even if it’s not a terrible album I think I have only listened to two or three times. I think it’s down to that I rather cherish my old memories of Van Halen, simple as that.

Ajuna - Suntomb

A new week and a new album will be crowned with the great price "Record Of The Week", this time I'm turning myself towards our neighbours and greets the Danish band Ajuna welcome to Tune Of The Day and give them this weeks price to "Prisoners of the Sun".

Ajuna is hailing from Copenhagen, Denmark, their music is a mixture of atmospheric post metal with roots of black metal.  It's dark and harsh toned with plenty of emotional suffering to be played with the cold and darkness that is getting on to us. A perfect album for November and it's well worth buying.

The debut album "Prisoners of the Sun" is recorded and mixed by producer Jacob Bredahl.
Ajuna consists of:
Anders Hufsa Andersen - Vocals,
Alex Hartfelt - Guitar / Vocals,
Frederik Trampe - Guitar / Vocals,
Peter Helmer Madsen - Bass,
Jesper Skovsted Pedersen - Drums

Todays tune "Suntomb" is taken from the debut album "Prisoners Of The Sun", released at September 27th, the leadsinger Anders Hufsa Andersen's comment on the song: "Suntomb is a metaphor for the psychiatric system and a prisoner of the sun is a person who needs psychopharmaca in order to function. It's about the fine line between being medicated until you can't recognize yourself or live a life dominated by psychotic episodes and paranoia."

Stephen Stills - Season Of The Witch

Sunday, time for a classic and a tune called "Season of the Witch".

The song is one of the first psychedelic songs, written by Donovan and first released in September 1966 on his Epic Records (USA) album, Sunshine Superman. In the United Kingdom, a cover version by The Pandamonium was released as a single in November 1966, while Donovan's version was finally released in June 1967 on the Pye Records compilation Sunshine Superman.

Al Kooper and Stephen Stills covered the song on their album Super Session in 1968; the album's other featured guitarist, Mike Bloomfield, performed a version with Kooper at a New York "Super Session" concert eventually released on disc in 2003 as The Lost Fillmore Concert Tapes 12-13-68, though a subsequent bootleg concert recording features Bloomfield declining requests for the song saying he disliked the song. The Kooper-Stills version has been sampled in a number of hip-hop songs. This version also features "Fast" Eddie Hoh on drums, who played on Donovan's original recording.

Super Session is an album conceived by Al Kooper and featuring the work of guitarists Mike Bloomfield and Stephen Stills, released on Columbia Records in 1968, CS 9701. Bloomfield and Stills do not play together on the album, with tracks including Bloomfield on side one, and those including Stills on side two. Todays tune is taken from side two :)

Black Sabbath - Loner

Yesterday, I found myself on Hovet, Stockholm for a tour finish with Lars Winnerbäck, on the other side of town did the Legends "Black Sabbath" play at Friends Arnea. I really wish I could be there and watch the show, but not this time, but i believe it was awesome!

The Reunion Tour is an ongoing concert tour by heavy metal band Black Sabbath, celebrating the band's 2012 reunion and in support of their album 13, which is the group's first album to feature their original singer Ozzy Osbourne since 1978's Never Say Die! and original bassist Geezer Butler since 1994's Cross Purposes.

So I really hope that all the lucky ticket holders did have fun yesterday.

Live... Gathered in Their Masses is an upcoming live album and video by English rock band Black Sabbath. It features performances from their 2013 world tour. It is due to be released on 26 November 2013 as a CD, DVD and BluRay. The performances were recorded at shows in Melbourne, Australia on 29 April and 1 May 2013 and todays tune is taken from it and the latest studio release, enjoy
