The Vintage Caravan - Expand Your Mind

Well, now we have reach the end of this year and it's time for the last tune to be played here at Tune Of The Day for 2013. We look forward to 2014 and a really nice music year.

One of the upcoming bands might be this young band, hailing from the Greater Reykjavik area. The Vintage Caravan was originally founded around 2006 when the band members were very young. However, it did not become a serious project until 2009.

The Vintage Caravan are known for their energetic stage performance and have been very active live for the past few years. Since 2011 the band has released two LPs with the latter being released by one of the largest record labels in Iceland, Sena which they made a deal with in early 2012. That same year bassist Alex Örn joined the group.

Musical influences are very diverse but mainly include the classic hard rock of the 60's and 70's. Though the influence may suggest a glorified retro-type band, The Vintage Caravan do it in their own way with a powerful attitude and a modern twist.

Todays tune "Expand Your Mind" is taken from the album "Voyage", that will be released on Jan. 10th (EU), Jan. 13th (UK) and January 21, 2014 (NA) via Nuclear Blast Records.

Anciients - Heart Of Oak

Number 1 on Tune Of The Days best album list of year 2013 is the Vancouver-based rock juggernaut "Anciients" with thier debut album "Heart Of Oak"

The band concits of:

Kenny - Lead Guitar & Vocals
Chris - Guitar & Vocals
Booner - Bass & Vocals
Hannay - Drums

What a debut, what a refreshing slice of progressive music. A record that should be enjoyed in its entirety, for it is a journey through a deep progressive landscape, a large and rich dynamic maze, chances are that you will be stuck there forever.

Somewhere between sheer, apocalyptic heaviness and precise riffing, lays otherworldly Anciients, a forging crushing heavy metal evocative of veterans High on Fire and contemporary sonic craftsmen, Opeth, with Mastodon and Baroness finesse. The band have combined fuck-off-huge chords with mind-altering riffage that takes you on an unfamiliar trip.

Todays tune "Raise The Sun" gives you a taste on what's waiting for you!

SubRosa - More Constant Than The Gods

Number 2 on Tune Of The Days best album list of year 2013 is the absolutely amazing SubRosa, Sludge Doom from Salt Lake City, where the record More Constant Than The Gods reaches really high on this year's list. A record filled with heavy riffs and dueling violins, where Rebecca Vernon's plainsong is as striking as it is sludgy depressed.

Within the Subrosa crucible, sludgy low-end and high volume lock arms with ultra-melodicism, folk and experimental elements delivered through the haunting ambience of two electric violins.

Todays tune "Cosey Mo" is taken from the third album "More Constant Than The Gods"

Windhand - Soma

Number 3 on Tune Of The Days best album list of year 2013 is the record "Soma", that is both ominously and inviting, sticky riffs and melodies from the south filled with ghost-like screams from vocalist Dorthia Cottrell, whose vocals sounds like she's singing them from another world. Deeply hypnotic and powerful album.

Soma is a record more than just doom-metal fanatics—this is an superb record for all fans of guitar driven trancendental, syrupy slow, monolithic and downtuned doom and it's as catchy as it is heavy. Propelled by singer Dorthia Cottrell’s beautifully haunting bellow, Windhand’s dual guitar attack sounds like the glorious misfit offspring of early Black Sabbath and Sleep.

Todays tune "Woodbine" is a great piece taken from Soma, enjoy!

Jex Thoth - Blood Moon Rise

Number 4 on Tune Of The Days best album list of year 2013 is a fabulous dark, almost frightening record. Jex voice is very close, very intimate filled with emotional nuances complemented by the eerie psychedelic atmosphere.

A significant droning influence sprinkled with doses of psychedelia and heedy occult undertones is the ground of Jex Thoth music and it really hits me like a canon ball in solar plexus. "Blood Moon Rise" is a absolute stunner, a superb achievement of true artistic ambition that is beyond the scope of what most other bands could even dream of.

Todays tune "Ehjä" taken from thier 2:nd full length album "Blood Moon Rise"

The Ocean - Pelagial

Number 5 on Tune Of The Days best album list of year 2013 is the record "Pelagial", that is a multidimensional composition filled with lots of creative brilliance. The album, with its musical concept describes a physical journey from the ocean's surface to its dark depths, a mental journey that allows listeners to sit still in the boat.

The Ocean are absolutely unpredictable, one of the most dynamic and exciting bands of today. The Ocean take aesthetics of post-metal and blend them with elements of metalcore and progressive rock.

Todays tune "Bathyalpelagic II: The Wish in Dreams" taken from the sixth studio album "Pelagial" by German metal band The Ocean.

The Ocean video was directed by Alexander Kraudelt and Lukas Hambach, produced by Frameshock, with additional visuals by Craig Murray.
